1. Don't write off religion - it can be the key to a stable family

Comment #82562 by goldmineguttd on October 26, 2007 at 6:02 pm

Nobody catch this?

Isn't it curious that we tolerate the stereotyping of religion in a way we'd never abide with race, religion or gender?

2. Why are we Muslims so self-destructive?

Comment #73334 by goldmineguttd on September 24, 2007 at 7:00 pm

#7- hello, it's the internet. Since when were pseudonyms frowned on? Chillllll. I'm not hiding behind anything; I simply plugged in my current standard net handle when I signed up for this site.

3. Why are we Muslims so self-destructive?

Comment #73219 by goldmineguttd on September 24, 2007 at 1:35 pm

I wouldn't knock the author. It'll take a lot of this type of speaking out to get Islam to change from within. It's a stubbornly conservative religion, in most forms, and it's going to be difficult to destroy.

I think we need to make very clear that Muslim doesn't equal Arab/Persian/etc, and give Islam no special treatment at all.

My proposal is we all add "Damn Allah" to our repetioure of epithets.

4. Send In the Clergy!

Uh, the source is Prison Planet. In the interest of free inquiry I'll look into it, but I'm 99% sure, considering the source, that it's a crazy conspiracy theory that got picked up by one local network.

5. Sikh girl will convert for a place at Catholic school

Comment #64513 by goldmineguttd on August 20, 2007 at 11:09 am

Schooling should be the same for every child and should be done in one type of school, so that the children sit next to each other and learn and play together. If parents want their children to learn about bowling a yorker, or playing the flute, or religion, they may arrange something outside the school.

Is this too idealistic to contemplate ?

The very idea of these faith schools is pretty foreign to me. In America, besides some Catholic schools, we throw everyone together with no regard for religion.

Then again I live in Vermont; I'm sure there's more fuckwittery down south.

7. Flea Circus!

Isn't this good? They're all really advertisements for the originals. It's clear people are taking note :-)

9. Happy 50th Birthday to PZ Myers!

Comment #24902 by goldmineguttd on March 9, 2007 at 5:31 am

Did Richard coin the term "faith-head"? Is it like crack-head? I like it either way.

Happy Birthday, PZ!

10. Darwin's God

Comment #24071 by goldmineguttd on March 4, 2007 at 3:34 pm

I stopped reading that at: "not whether God exists, which is a matter for philosophers and theologians, but why the belief does."

No! Wrong!

11. Atheists come in last

Comment #22825 by goldmineguttd on February 23, 2007 at 4:21 pm

Isn't Obama a Muslim? Then wouldn't it benefit him more to say that he is Christian?

It's kind of disturbing that you think that. Have you been watching Fox News?

He's a Christian, and I've read parts of his book, and his take on religion in public discourse is pretty similar to Dennett's. I'm supporting him, he's the best we can expect.

12. Is America Too Damn Religious?

Comment #22775 by goldmineguttd on February 22, 2007 at 5:44 am

having said that I'm not sure what anyone can do about it. I actually think that promoting atheism is not going to work. Instead imo nontheists should ally with moderate theists against the extremists.

lol, uh, that's what we've been doing so far!

It's time to stop doing that.

13. Blashpemy Challenge Interview

Comment #20040 by goldmineguttd on January 31, 2007 at 6:12 am

This is such a petty project, it does little but undermine the intellectual argument for atheism.

I see it as atheism empowerment. Its silly, sure, but it gives possibly isolated atheists a chance to stand up and say "I'm not afraid to declare myself an atheist." I'm all for it.

14. Guest Host Bill Moyers with philosopher Daniel Dennett

Comment #18662 by goldmineguttd on January 22, 2007 at 9:18 am

I like the "music/agriculture/language is older than religion" line.

I love this guy.

15. Noam Chomsky Interview on Faith

Comment #18479 by goldmineguttd on January 21, 2007 at 6:11 am

I have just started reading Dennett's 'Darwin's Dangerous Idea' and will bear your comment in mind.

Oh good. I think its fantastic, but I'm no authority. I have "Breaking the Spell" sitting next to me waiting to be read, but after DDI I'm very excited to get started.

16. Noam Chomsky Interview on Faith

Comment #18468 by goldmineguttd on January 21, 2007 at 4:49 am

In Darwin's Dangerous Idea, Daniel Dennett lays into Chomsky pretty heavily. I don't remember what for, exactly, besides being a dualist...

17. 'God Is Not a Moderate'

Comment #18073 by goldmineguttd on January 18, 2007 at 6:51 am

Yeah, this is Harris at his best.

(I like to call this "the god of the last gap" or GOLG perhaps would be a better name.)

I'd come up with the same device but with a different name (Lowest Common Diety). I think I'll steal yours.

19. The New Atheists

Comment #16276 by goldmineguttd on January 5, 2007 at 7:42 pm

He takes the most narrow and the most legalistic side of religion and makes that religion, and then he's against it.

This is the most common criticism and its such a cop-out. If I weren't late for work I'd post PZ Meyer's fantastic reply...
