Jeeze Scottish geologist, they are scarey! And what exactly is their problem with homosexuality anyway? Like, seriously haven't these people got anything better to worry about?

It is interesting to hear your responses here. There is sometimes too much back-slapping among the "aren't we right brigade" and it is good to have the other side of the argument presented. Your phrase "atheist believers" offends me as I am sure you meant it to but I will not waste time exploring why here.
I have had a look at one of your open-letters to Dawkins at http://www.freechurch.org/issues/2007/janb07.htm. I have no doubt that your understanding of the scripture is second to none and will not make any judgement on the arguments you have made using it. However there is one section in your letter that I would like to bring up with you because for me it is the essence of why I find Christianity appalling. It is in your letter entitled "the good book and the moral zeitgeist" when you are discussing the crucifixion of Jesus to make amends for our sins.
"For most people the notion that we have done anything so bad as to deserve death is repellent. But that is because we do not have an adequate understanding of evil and sin. And we have no real awareness of the depths of depravity in our own hearts."
The depths of depravity in our own hearts? Is that really what you think of people? You, me, you mother, your children, your friends, Richard Dawkins, Alistair McGrath, Mrs Brown who runs the corner shop? All of us harbour secret, evil desires in our hearts. Do we all want to cause pain and fear; do we all want to indulge in a hedonistic frenzy free from all restraint and goodness? Is this what you think of us all? Bad little children who are just waiting for the moment when we can break away and do whatever our twisted little hearts desire?
Maybe deep inside that is want you are like. I for one have never much enjoyed hurting other people and beyond the occasional chocolate binge find self-indulgence quite an unrewarding pastime. I am a very ordinary person but I can honestly say the things that make me happy are those where I can contribute to others happiness in some way. I really don't think there are any depths of depravity within me. In fact, I find the suggestion that I do intensely insulting. Your pessimism at the state of the human race is incredible.
Or it would be incredible if it wasn't an idea that has been peddled for centuries. It's the basis of most religion and keeping the people down. You are all bad, you need god to make you good. Beg for his forgiveness!
Bullshit. We are average, mediocre. We have the potential for good and bad. Your pessimistic religion only allows you to see the dark side of human nature: as soon as someone does something good the God gets the credit. Why don't you look at the ordinary people who just get on? We care for each other most of the time and get in wrong sometimes. Do we have dark hearts? Really?
I am not a skilled writer or professional thinker as you are and I am sure you can slap down my little complaint very easily. That doesn't really matter. A central doctrine of your religion is the crucifixion. And with the crucifixion comes this intensely insulting and pessimistic message.
Surely anyone who can think for themselves can see that it is bullshit.

I'd just like to point out to you that you cannot have debate without there being two sides to the argument.
It is very brave for religious people such as Gimbengloin to come on an atheistic forum such as this and share their views. However, such sharing is helpful to us as it is only in debate that we can develop and crystalize our arguments. He did not hijak the forum, he asked questions and gave his opinions in a polite manner as everyone else on here has done. Childish insults are not an appropriate way to respond (i.e. calling people "loons")
I'd also like you to consider what has bought a cofessedly religious person to a web-site like this one and also to read Dawkins' work. His open-mindedness in looking at the arguments against belief should be praised even if they do not sway him to give up the supernatural completely.
