1. British Airways takes beef off the menu to avoid offending Hindus

Comment #178067 by faouloki on May 10, 2008 at 11:53 am

Nova - I defend it because like Buddhism, Hinduism is responsible for almost no trouble to society and our real enemies at the moment are the really damaging religions of Christianity in the States and Islam in Britain.

Absolutely untrue. I would suggest reading some Hitchens for some good examples. Buddhism, and particularly Hinduism can be just as damaging, you just don't hear about them so much because both the US and the UK are Christian-dominated societies currently obsessed with Islam.

2. Dawkins warns of human extinction

Comment #155177 by faouloki on April 4, 2008 at 8:12 am

What's your point scottishgeologist? If the God of the Bible does indeed exist, there might be a very strong case for being prepared to meet him, don't you think? If he does not, not all that much is lost by believing in Him.

Um, I think it has more to do with people walking in to watch Richard talk going past a sign saying "Prepare to meet thy God"

4. Dawkins warns of human extinction

Comment #155162 by faouloki on April 4, 2008 at 7:59 am

Artful_Dodger - wow, who'd have thought the official Richard Dawkins website would have comments about Richard Dawkins!?

5. Protests no concern for outspoken atheist

Comment #154949 by faouloki on April 4, 2008 at 2:59 am

Derick Gillies, of the Free Church of Scotland, said there was an unbalanced debate between those believing in creationism and those believing in evolution.

I find it odd whenever I hear that religious people feel there is unbalanced debate when it comes to issues such as evolution.

Aside from the fact that Professor Dawkins has and continues to take part in debates with religious figures, and that there is always a right to reply, be it through the press, online or in Churches etc. There have also been thousands of years of persecution against people who go against the accepted religion of those in power; be it through believing in a different religion or by having no religion at all. Maybe they would prefer it if we were all silenced, like we would have been in the good old days?

6. Canadian fossil makes waves in Huckabee's presidential run

Comment #111904 by faouloki on January 16, 2008 at 1:27 am

for those who don't understand how american politics work: public opinion is intensely studied and the candidates are merely responding to polls when they state their 'beliefs'. who knows what mr. huckabee really believes.

In the case of candidates like Barak Obama I'd agree with you, but when they go lengths to become ordained Baptist ministers I think they've gone beyond merely bowing to public expectation.

That said, they could just be going to the greatest lengths possible to demonstrate they're deluded and that they are just like the majority of the population.

7. Pope's exorcist squads will wage war on Satan

Comment #104652 by faouloki on December 29, 2007 at 4:35 am

scottishgeologist "When he was diagnosed with lung cancer last year, he regarded the tumour as a "personal attack" by Satan, who was trying to steal his voice "to destroy Christ's message". When doctors gave him the all clear around the turn of this year, he proclaimed his recovery an "amazing miracle". The Devil had suffered a tremendous defeat. "I've lived to see the Devil run away. I'm like Lazarus, who rose from the grave."

But a few weeks later it emerged that the cancer had spread to his brain."

One of the best punchlines i've heard in a long time, thanks for that!

8. Priest who committed suicide for rebirth cremated

There also exists a doctrine that the earth (flat of course) rests atop an elephant named Maha-Pumbra, who in turn stands on a turtle named Chukwa, and this turtle swims in the primordial sea of milk.

Wait, this is from Discworld surely?

9. 'Atheistic fundamentalism' fears

Argh, my brain is leaking out of my ears!

What rubbish.

10. Sorry to disappoint, but it's nonsense to suggest we want to ban Christmas

Comment #101944 by faouloki on December 21, 2007 at 8:28 am

It only seems to be the religious who argue over who "owns" christmas. Sure, we give it the Christian name in the western world, but the same sort of celebration is common in nearly every culture and religion that exists.
I'm glad I can distance myself from that and use it purely as an excuse to eat, drink and not go to work.

11. 2007, a bad year for God squadders

Comment #101847 by faouloki on December 21, 2007 at 2:53 am

Damn, what a kick in the nuts at the end... of course, the capitals on He should have been a clue i guess.

The article stinks of the Arch B of C's comments yesterday... "i know it's bollocks but I'm going to believe it anyway".

13. Al Qaeda: We're open to questions

Diacanu-

Fortunately USA_Limey quoted it so it's still there for us all to enjoy!

14. Protests Over The Golden Compass

Comment #98679 by faouloki on December 14, 2007 at 3:07 am

The absurdity is that anything like this that comes from The Onion could just have easily come from a religious site and we wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Very amusing though, and very true.

15. World History

Comment #98039 by faouloki on December 13, 2007 at 2:49 am

Agree with dialector.
The fact that Marx's ideas were secular, and Stalin gave the impression that he was Marxist, it is assumed that Stalin was an atheist and that's what made him kill so many people. I think ultimately Stalin wanted to replace god with himself, and as such would have very much been against atheists. As many people have said in the past, if Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, Christopher Hitchens or any other of our high-profile free thinkers was in Stalinist Russia they would not have lived long.
To say Stalin killed because he was an atheist is a logical as saying Stalin killed because he liked the colour red.

16. Nurses Told to Turn Muslims' Beds to Mecca

Comment #94324 by faouloki on December 5, 2007 at 10:00 am

I must beg that the owners of this site check sources before they post articles. I know that this site is based in the US, but please be aware that articles from uk tabloids and opinion rags such as the express and the mail should be treated with EXTREME caution.

That said, don't Muslims have to prostrate themselves to pray as well? Maybe the beds should have a function that, once turned to Mecca, flings them out onto the ground.

17. Atheism's Wrong Turn

Comment #93549 by faouloki on December 3, 2007 at 12:56 pm

I think what is disturbing here is that no book from the "new atheists" calls for believers to be stoned, beheaded or otherwise killed. They don't encourage violence of any sort. They encourage reasoned debate, wider viewpoints and outlooks, and yes verbal criticism of religions. And yet they are warmongering and dangerous? Where as 2000 year old texts that encourage the death penalty for countless trivial things, and that actively encourage war among religions are in no way harmful?

I heard a rather pathetic debate the other day between an atheist and a catholic. The atheist was incredibly calm and collected (much like Dawkins) and had his arguments well constructed and thought out. After the catholic had her say, he merely questioned the things she said, and she flew off the handle. He was accused of being intolerant, aggressive and was told numerously to "grow up". He hadn't even finished his argument.
This seems to be the knee-jerk reaction of the religious to any atheist viewpoint. In some ways, it's encouraging, as we are rattling them and making them nervous, and they are realising that their silly superstitions that have blighted society for so many years are finally being questioned on a large scale.

18. Papal encyclical attacks atheism, lauds hope

Comment #93017 by faouloki on December 2, 2007 at 1:29 am

I'd love for him to define "technology"; how far does he go back, the wheel? Using sharpened sticks to hunt? These are hopefully the last gulps of air before the whole horrible organisation goes under.
I won't even bother with his pointless Marx argument, because he seems to be able to insert his foot into his mouth all by himself.

With regards to calling ourselves atheist, I for one like the term, and I think the catholic church, and the religious in general, will always use whatever term you give yourself as something bad; face it, in their eyes it is.

19. Atheists and believers have got religion wrong

Comment #63616 by faouloki on August 15, 2007 at 5:22 am

I like Mark Steel but this article is very sloppy. He doesn't seem to know what point he is trying to make, and it seems that whilst he wants to agree with the atheists, he also doesn't want to lose face with the religious and so ends up offending them all and isolating himself.
He also is making old, tired arguments which have been discussed to death.

22. The Creation Museum: Prepare to believe

Comment #40956 by faouloki on May 15, 2007 at 8:48 am

It looks impressive, if only it had been built to teach something worthwhile. Such a waste of money and talent.

23. Pope abolishes limbo

Comment #33995 by faouloki on April 23, 2007 at 2:36 am

So by that logic, aborted foeti and embroinic cells get an automatic pass to heaven. Therefore, surely the Catholic church should be in support of abortion and stem cell research!

24. NEXT MONDAY: Bill O'Reilly interviews Richard Dawkins

O'Reilly's ugly mug on the home page put me right off my pasta salad!

25. Aids Victims Risk Lives

Comment #29475 by faouloki on April 3, 2007 at 3:53 am

This is saddening to read, and demonstrates what lengths people will go to when desperate. I think what is worse is there is obviously a hospital nearby where real, proven, treatment is available and yet they submit to superstition which will give them a painful and needless end to their lives.
I would like to see some evidence to support the churches claim that hundreds of people have been cured.

28. Germany Cites Koran in Rejecting Divorce

Comment #27087 by faouloki on March 23, 2007 at 5:37 am

"...most mainstream Muslims have long rejected wife-beating as a relic of the medieval age."

And the rest of the Koran isn't i suppose?

29. Britain Proposes Allowing Schools to Forbid Full-Face Muslim Veils

Comment #26864 by faouloki on March 22, 2007 at 3:26 am

Some of the comments on this post are shocking, and saddening to read. I think most people will know which I am referring to, and I am ashamed right now to be associated with this website.

30. British Book Awards shortlists 2007

I would love to see Richard and Judy (the personification of the Daily Mail) interviewing Richard Dawkins about his book if he won.

MIND_REBEL: "I'm Mexican, and have seen enough gang violence to know that gangbangers are the scum of the earth. No excuses."

I'm guessing gangbangers means something different in Mexico to the UK?

32. [Warning: Graphic] Children's foreheads slashed in Muslim saint's name

Comment #19993 by faouloki on January 31, 2007 at 2:45 am

Squiddity, you do realise this is reposted from CNN and not written by anyone at RD.net? The way it is written is not the issue here, it is merely posted to highlight what is being done to these children in the name of religion.

33. Blasphemy Challenge on FOX

Comment #19674 by faouloki on January 29, 2007 at 7:47 am

I would argue that despite the infamy Fox has in the US, Murdoch's empire is nowhere near as bad in the UK. Sure Sky News and the Sun don't come anywhere near fair, but the Daily Mail and their TV counterparts ITN (ITV) I would say are much worse.
