Of course that response will be hand-wavy and waffly in the extreme, but at least a civil servant will spend time composing it.
Then why do they all look like they came from the same random text generator?
Because all civil servants are trained in writing prose that looks like random text.

You have to be a british citizen?....
oh well.
Why not create a new one where you accept the signing of everyone who wants to sign?
After all this form of child abuse isn't ONLY happening in Britain.
In case it's not clear, the site where the petition is based is an official UK government site. For that reason, it only takes signatures from British citizens and residents. Once the petition deadline has passed, the signatories will all get an official response from the government.

Of course that response will be hand-wavy and waffly in the extreme, but at least a civil servant will spend time composing it.

If you want to start a similar petition on another site then feel free. But you won't get a response from the British government :-)

4. Pat Condell: Anthology DVD available now!

I'd love to buy this, but I'd much prefer it if it was available in PAL and I could pay in sterling.

The RDF operates in the UK as well doesn't it? Why does the shop side seem to be exclusively aimed at the US?

Actually that's not "the BBC's idea of a blog". You can find the BBC's blogs at www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/. What you've found there is a message board for users - which, hopefully, explains why it's full of such nonsense.

Did anyone else notice the URL for that article?

Should someone point out to the Guardian science desk that early human remains have nothing to do with dinosaurs?

7. Britain cannot put its faith in religiously divided schools

"sectarian schools" might be a better name
I've always prefered "superstition schools" :-)

This piece was written before Ed Balls spoke to MPs and is therefore largely guesswork about what he might say.

What he actually said was rather different.

The Government has decided against backing more faith schools, the Children, Schools and Families Secretary, Ed Balls, told MPs.

In what is being seen as one of the most significant policy shifts of the post-Tony Blair era in education, he told a Commons select committee: "It is not the policy of the Government nor my department to expand the number of faith schools. We're not leading a drive for more faith schools."

9. New attempt to end blasphemy law

Comment #109870 by davorg on January 10, 2008 at 1:17 am

The BBC have a story (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7178439.stm) explaining what happened in the debate.

The Justice Minister, Maria Eagle, said that the government has "every sympathy" with the case for abolishing the blasphemy laws and has promised a "short and sharp" consultation with the Church of England which is likely to be followed by a government amendment to remove the laws. On the basis of this, Dr Harris withdrew his amendment.

You can read the full debate on TheyWorkForYou at http://www.theyworkforyou.com/debates/?id=2008-01-09a.437.4 (hmm, not sure why that URL hasn't been recognised and automatically made clickable - there might be a bug in the URL recognition regex).

There goes my weekend :-)

Am I missing a subtle joke here? Why is each part labelled as an "Edpisode"?

The title on the original web site is the more sensible-sounding "A Revelation".

12. 'Root of All Evil? The Uncut Interviews' Released on DVD

Comment #67860 by davorg on September 5, 2007 at 2:42 am

Ignore me. I'm talking nonsense. My DVD player _does_ play NTSC DVDs. It's non-region 2 DVDs it can't play until I apply the hack. And that's not a problem with your DVDs - as they're multi-region.

Sorry for the confusion.

I'd still be interested to know why you can't produce both formats though.

Comment #67859 by davorg on September 5, 2007 at 2:37 am

I know that my DVD player doesn't play NTSC disks. There's an upgrade procedure, but it costs £30 and I haven't got round to it yet as I haven't needed it.

Is there some reason why it's hard for you to release these disks in both formats?

Please consider releasing your DVDs in PAL format as well. We're not all Americans :)

Haven't you ever heard of holy communion?

But you trying telling christians that their beliefs endorse ritualised cannabalism. They don't like it one bit.

A copy in every hotel room would be a wonderful target.
That would be excellent. Right next to the Gideon Bible. How do we start? And how do we ensure that it's not removed by the cleaning staff?
