1. Is Christianity Good for the World? A discussion between Christopher Hitchens and Douglas Wilson

I have to admire Wilson for being such a jackass. Most Christians at least try to fake being "nice".

Foxworth-less has always irritated me, but I dont think he contributes that much to the stereotype. If he were funny, I would cut him some slack.

Hard to tell where the bible-belt is anymore. It seems to cover most of the U.S. except for parts of California (where Scientologist have supplanted the bible-thumpers.)

If people in Iowa have such intellectual prowess, then why do you insist on repeatedly stereotyping people from the south? Seems it was Kansas that was banning the teaching of evolution. I'm just a dumb hillbilly, but I'm fairly sure Kansas is closer to Iowa than Alabama.

The moderator should have asked those two midgets Kelly smuggled in for their opinion.

I have had success using Effexor, but I was originally prescribed Paxil. I won't go into details, but Paxil was a damn nightmare.

While there is some value in SSRI's or SNRI's they shouldn't be prescribed by anyone other than a psychiatrist, yet virtually any physician can prescribe them.

On a lighter note, you may not benefit from using them but your S.O. will be cheered considerably by your considerably delayed orgasm. I know mine was.

Sullivan's "You're going to DIE!" essay, sounds suspiciously like a fire-&-brimstone sermon used to scare little kids into "accepting Jesus". Bit more articulate, but essentially the same old crap. Another disappointment.

Its not lack of backbone. The schoolboard agrees with "preachin'" in the school. That's why they are banning tape recorders. Fairly sickening since some students may wish to record the lectures merely to review them later. Of course, the content of most science instruction in high school is so poor anyway, I can't imagine why they would. I hope someone opposes the ban on recorders for that reason.

I mainly think it is too bad that the West got stuck with a stupid religion like Christianity, but I guess it could have been worse.

From Sullivan's reply -

"They are dangerous because they logically contradict each other. And since their claims are the most profound that we can imagine, human beings will often be compelled to fight for them. For if these profound matters are not worth fighting for, what is?

I agree that this is a central problem for religion in the world. It has always been so. it will always be so."

There is no good reason for this, but at least Sullivan concedes that religion is a source of conflict and violence.
Doing away with faith-based religion and the accompanying irrational certainty would be a boon to the world.

It seems Sullivan has given it his best and been found lacking. In fairness, could anyone have done any better?
Harris (and Dawkins) case is so clear and ironclad who could legitimately refute it? Dogmatic religion (and here I mean Christianity & Islam), in moderate or extreme form, is strongly opposed to the search for whatever truth we may be able to discover. To paraphrase Robert Pirsig "the truth may knock on the door and the religious person says 'go away, I've already FOUND the truth'".
