...i'll be in haven crying while i whatch all of you go towards hell and burn for eternity...good luck with that.

Don't you whatch me, or I'll whatch you right back! I went to an elementary school named "Haven". I used to whatch all the other kids eating in the cafeteria. They said the food was hell. I cried too, because it was haven.

C'mon... you can admit it: you like the idea of other people burning and suffering while you whatch (sic). Makes you feel good about yourself. Watch out: that woody will catch on fire!

I have read, listened to debates and research some. What I have seen accepted just supports my views.

OK, then...

Not to mention the fact that both of us work off of a presupposition. We look for facts that support our position.

We might call that presupposition our "hypothesis". And we *would* be interested in facts that supported that hypothesis; but some of us would also be interested in findings that refute that hypothesis.

...The next day the doctor was amazed to see a complete healing with no scar.

Any doctor with half a brain would have published that as a case report. Without documentation, this is nothing more than an anecdote. What's more, it points up the wild inconsistency of the supposed intervention... there are good, sincere people who are devoutly religious who pray for something considerably more important than the healing of a finger. Like a child who is dying of cancer. I know such people. Your finger story makes a mockery of people with *real* problems.

The first line of the Hippocratic Oath, from Wikipedia:

Original, translated into English:[1]
“I swear by Apollo, Asclepius, Hygieia, and Panacea, and I take to witness all the gods, all the goddesses, to keep according to my ability and my judgment, the following Oath."

Not just *one* god! Lucky for me, dentists make a pledge involving *zero* deities... a more accurate number.

Just because the bible is bound and considered Holy by many does not mean it can't be reliable historical documents

It doesn't have to be a case of mutual exclusivity; where corroborative evidence is available, parts of the bible may be regarded as historically accurate. Here are two short books that explore that evidence. FWIW, the author, my father-in-law, is not an atheist, and has given some fascinating talks at several local churches on this subject.

I don't know... the Tarvuism sounds more reasonable, except the frequency of prayer depends on the state of the union (read: "Norovirus").

Mimmin O'tibbi noonah,

That post (780. Comment #304805 by jgirolamo on December 22, 2008 at 9:14 am) sounds more like a classic "breakdown" to me: "I know he died for me and that he thinks I am crazy beautiful, something I never believed about myself." Yet the mind is an amazing thing. I've known several people who have reported this sort of conversion experience; without exception there was a background of stress or disease. Somehow they were able to convince themselves that their lives were different, yet this was not apparent to anyone else. I was never bothered by this except when I was targeted for evangelism.

I am your typical tongue speaking hand raising woman of God.

The bible has this to say:
1 Timothy
2:11 Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.
2:12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.
2:13 For Adam was first formed, then Eve.
2:14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.
2:15 Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.

One thing I take out of this and I suspected this before I even came to this site , that Atheists hold on to their faith as I do.

"Atheism is a faith the way not collecting stamps is a hobby."
May God bless you richly, Jesus loves every last one of you.

I can't help it I am compelled to do this.

We know that remote intercessory prayer does nothing. It happens to be true. Knock yourself out.

Again, God created the universe. How do I know? I was not there so I have to break it down. Just like knowing Washington was the first pres. I wasn't there but it happens to be true.

Surely, in spite of your professed ignorance, you must see that this analogy does not hold. We have many independent sources of evidence that Washington was the first president; there are no such sources for the creation of the universe.

Why is belief in supernatural beings so common? Because of the design of human minds. Human minds, under normal developmental conditions, have a strong receptivity to belief in gods, in the afterlife, in moral absolutes, and in other ideas commonly associated with 'religion' … In a real sense, religiousness is the natural state of affairs. Unbelief is relatively unusual and unnatural.

Shoot. J. Mills has beaten me to my first chance at an intelligent comment in a good while. It also occurs to me that implications of the sentence I've bolded above may not be as negative as they might seem: we unbelievers may be on to something!

Yes, but once you get over your smug superior feeling and look around the site, you find some very persuasive information. For example, this caption under an image of a tornado:

(Tornadoes) The most violent winds on earth are those found in the phenomenon called a tornado. Winds can reach a top speed of 300 mph, and the path of these funnel shaped columns can stretch for miles. Tornadoes are seen as general indications of end time wrath.

I mean, how much truth do you need to be laid out in front of you?

Decius said it better, but there is no such thing as total freedom from risk. It is true that if your child is the one who has the serious adverse reaction the low incidence is small consolation. But when the risk of the alternative is so much greater, how would you feel in the case that your child developed cancer? There will be many more parents in the latter position, given equal numbers of those receiving and declining the vaccine.

They used a technique developed in Padua to strip the windpipe of its donor's original cells, a procedure that took six weeks, to create a "scaffold".

If they stripped the original cells, what was left from the donor's windpipe?

The trachea is mostly cartilage, which is fairly acellular:
(from http://www.lab.anhb.uwa.edu.au/mb140/CorePages/Respiratory/respir.htm#LARYNX)
Tracheal cartilages

The trachea is stabilised by 16-20 C-shaped cartilages (hyaline cartilage). The free dorsal ends of the cartilages are connected by bands of smooth muscle (trachealis muscle) and connective tissue fibres. Longitudinal collagenous and elastic connective tissue fibres (annular ligaments) link the individual cartilages and allow both the lengthening and shortening of the trachea for example during swallowing or movements of the neck. They are inseparable from the fibres of the perichondrium. The tracheal cartilages may ossify with age.

Cartilages, annular ligaments and the trachealis muscle form the "skeleton" of the trachea which sometimes is referred to as tunica fibromusculocartilaginea. If you want to impress someone with this term make sure that you can pronounce and/or spell it.

A "scaffold" can be any tissue-compatible material that will serve to support (duh) the new cells, and ideally has the same basic shape as the future part. Here at UIC there have been some temporomandibular joint parts made this way. We also have had success using blood clots inside teeth as scaffolds for new tissue growth, so in some cases teeth with degenerated pulps have been re-vascularized (not just at UIC).
