1. Richard Dawkins Responds to Rabbi Shmuley Boteach

Comment #181613 by kaiserkriss on May 17, 2008 at 4:46 pm

Richard is being way to kind to this fraud and huckster, who should be brought up on charges of tax evasion and fraud.

As for the Hitler/ atheist debate, it makes about as much sense as accusing the catholic church of genocide in Rwanda, just because a few of their priests were implicated and convicted of war crimes. jcw

Goldy.. I hate to say it, but Red Deer is hardly representative of Alberta. I do agree with you about the pickups though. For the one time a year they need to go to the dump or pick up lumber, they need a pick up.

In fact our Federal government even gave pickups a tax break in the last budget, because they are regarded as the trade-man's mode of transportation and he requires it to haul around his tools and junk. Give me a BREAK!!!

On the other hand if you are a farmer, I don't have a problem, it is the urban farmer I have a problem with...

As I said above we don't really have an energy problem as others have point out when taken solar energy into consideration, we have an energy STORAGE problem.jcw

anna, here in the capital of the canadian oil industry (Calgary) we are lucky enough to have a fairly well laid out bicycle path system, with room for improvements that many people use to commute to work. Unfortunately, despite the predictions of global warming, our bike path is probably only useful from mid April to mid October at the latest, when it just lets too cold and dangerous (ice and melting snow)to use without taking ones life into ones hand. I presume this also applies to many of the mid western states that have quite miserable winters.

Your point is taken though, municipal governments need to be encouraged to provide better access, and basically safer and CONVENIENT public transport systems.

Mesomodel: I sort of agree with you, conservation would definitely help and should be part of the solution. Personally I feel we don't have an energy problem, but more of a storage problem of on demand energy.jcw

Couple of things to remember. At current world oil prices of approximately $125/bbl, the liter price works out to be about $0.75. Allowing for transportation, refining and retail costs, the price at the pump should be under $1.00/ liter, or for the Americans $3.78/gallon.

For Europeans paying more than double, blame it on your governments who use fuel taxes to pay for other things they want to bribe the electorate with to remain in power.

The myth of the electric automobile remains exactly that, a myth. How is that electricity produced you want to store in those fancy throw away batteries? In many cases by hydroelectric power, nuclear power, coal and gas. From the original form of energy, the conversion and transmission losses to electricity are approximately 66%, something the proponents of electric cars conveniently forget.

The real solution is of course is to reduce consumption of energy, and the development of highly efficient internal combustion engines with increased efficiency such as the proposed hybrid gasoline diesel cycle that increases efficiency and reduces emissions at the same time.

Of course, if the green lobby were serious about their aims, they wouldn't be playing into the hands of big oil in the US where the newest refinery was built in 1983. There is tremendous room for making refineries more efficient, if only one could start with a clean sheet of paper. jcw

Like most here my first reaction would be to hunt down this miserable creature and hang him up by his testicles, but to what effect?

He would only be another martyr to his cause. The only way to bring these countries into line is to have a secular dictator like Saddam Hussein run the country and educating the people, as well as engaging them in commerce.

One of the biggest mistakes in history was made by the US ambassador to Iraq just before the invasion of Kuwait, where lack of understanding of Arab culture contributed significantly to a major misunderstanding, in which Saddam Hussein thought he had the tacit agreement of the USA to invade Kuwait. Saddam did not find religion until afterwards and it was convenient for him to fight the great white Satan.

Even though he had very many faults and ruled with an iron first, he was on the correct track to bring his people into the 20th Century at the time, similarly to the Shah of Iran earlier.

It is through education and the engagement of commerce with other successful societies that are more secular that the demon of religion, in this case the radical elements of Islam will be slain.

Poverty and misery brought on to the masses are places where religion and radical ideas thrive. Post 1918 Germany is a prime example.

The worst thing Bush and Blair did was to invade Iraq on false pretenses, just because they had a hate on for Saddam. Instead they should have tried to repair relations, encourage commerce and education to build up the country to act as another example for other Muslim countries that religious fanaticism self defeating in the long run.

One just has to take away the power radical mullahs have over the population by bringing up their standards of living to something acceptable, instead of bombing the shit out of everything. Just my $0.02 jcw

"Junior" is quite the musician himself, composing as well as being extremely competent oh guitar and especially keyboard. Unfortunately real life studies get in the way of his musical talents.

On topic again I'm going to buy Matt's book. Having witnessed the unfortunate conversion of my brother to Pentecostalism because of his love for a woman, I want to find out how these arm pits of humanity go about it. I attended my brother's dunking and acceptance into their community and almost burst out laughing as he literally took the plunge into a huge tub of water on the stage. What a joke! Because of this I rarely see or have the opportunity to communicate with my brother anymore.

Yes, and thank you for the correction. I live in the US where some 40% of the adult population [80 plus billion people] believe in the basic tenets of YEC.

He has truly shown his ignorance with this statement. The population of the US according to the 2005 census was just over 300 million.

Using his numbers, the US would be a mass of wall to wall flesh, a rather unappetizing image.

Now that I've had my Maalox after watching part 1, and still feeling nauseated by the son of Jacob (Benjamin)drivel, I can't believe this guy was ever elected to valedictorian at Yale. It must have been a very bad year.

As for his assertion of kill pills prescribed by German doctors, where is the evidence? His evidence at least in Part one was based on hearsay and probably gross exaggeration, once again demonizing German doctors and equating them with his favorite whipping boys, the Nazis.

As far as I know, assisted suicide is illegal in Germany, but legal in Belgium, Switzerland, Netherlands , and interestingly enough in the state of OREGON. Is Benny unable to tell the difference between Begium, Switzerland , Netherlands and Germany, or is he once again trying to knowingly spread false gossip for the sake of his position to his undereducated ID friends?

Calling a spade a spade IS politically incorrect in many instances, and in the examples you quoted, that makes you a double racist, hating Sammy Davis jr, the late black Jew.

I suspect nothing could be further from the truth, and in this instance the simplest solution is NOT the obvious answer.

So why do we have those "no fly zones" as you put it? Is the population at large too dumb to see through these simplistic ploys taken out of context, or are our leaders expressing their disgust at the electorate by making them look even dumber than they probably are?

My ex boss is a chemical engineer raised a Mennonite, and still a strong believer, who despises political correctness as long as it does not offend or conflict with his religious beliefs when all of a sudden it becomes personal.

mordacious :

Your comment about the more subtle control of the media by Christians in the US for fear of consumer back lash is undoubtably true, especially the visual media, TV, films, but could not be applied to the UK for example with the BBC.

The BBC is a publicly funded organization, that runs on a spineless politically correct philosophy, supported by its political masters.

It should be up to governments to do the right thing, rather than pander to the hurt feelings of a vocal and visible "potential" voting block.

The unfortunate thing is religious threats are only recognized by vocal lunatic fringes, often associated with right wing racists.

To make an impact, more progressive politicians have to come forward and call out any religious / fanatics or cults, regardless of their faith.jcw

Fanusi, FYI, German was actually my first language. While I can see that you might refer to Kampf as struggle, in its most basic form(remember Occam razor principal),Kampf would translate into fight, since there is no real word in German for the English word struggle.

edit to illustrate "Ich kaempfe den Feind" translates into "I am fighting the enemy", not "I am struggling with the enemy".

Especially when taken in the time context of the early 20th Century in Germany when Mein Kampf was written, language tended to be more black and white, Militaristic terms were quite common in every day language. The anglicising of German had yet to happen. end edit

Just to set the record straight, Kampf in German actually means fight. Mein Kampf translates into English as My Fight. It has absolutely nothing to do with any religious connotations that seem to be implied in jihad, however I remain to be corrected since I don't speak Arabic. jcw

Unfortunately there is no such thing as a true Communist country, not even Cuba.

Part of the problem, for in order to have true communism to work, you need an all knowing individual, something that is impossible, (except for theists).

I do however concur with your lament about the under educated state of society as a whole, that have no idea what the real issues are. Politics had become a popularity contest, where we are now run by idiots who couldn't even point to Mauritania on a world map. They all pander to the lowest common denominator.

So what IS the solution? Raising the standards for education would be an obvious starting point, but dance class, baseball, hockey, football are all so much more important to parents these days than critical thinking and the sciences.

It has taken this planet 3.5billion years to come up with some sort of intelligent life that has a reasonable understanding of the problems associated with speed of light or faster travel that would be necessary between star systems potentially capable of sustaining life, let alone intelligent life.

It is rather presumptuos of us to assume that any other intelligent life has developed at the same rate, or slightly faster than ourselves to get to our solar system in the same time period that intelligent life is developing on earth.

Don't get me wrong, I am convinced there is other intelligent life else where in the universe, only not close enough in time and space for them or ourselves to interact.(Famous last words not withstanding...)

Regardless of socialist vs capitalist, the bottom line seems to be that it is always easier to spend other peoples money, be that governments with their systemic inefficiencies, or corporations spending shareholders money on non company business.

Ditto goes for risk management; about the only people held to task on poor spending decisions are Management of companies when booted out by their shareholders for wasteful practices. Governments in reality are run by career bureaucrats who tend not to accountable to anyone. There are always exceptions such as Poodar's spouse and our lovely annabannana.

Politicians who are supposed to run the bureaucracy, if anything are the ones held accountable, but in most Developed countries, it is actually not the electorate that decides policy and boots out politicians, but the leadership of the parties standing for election.

(For those unfamiliar with the term bubba from Wikipedia "Because of its association with the southern part of the United States, bubba is often used outside the South as a pejorative meaning low economic status and limited education. The term "bubba" may also be taken to mean one who is a "good ol' boy." In the US Army and Marines, bubba can mean a lay soldier, similar to grunt but with connotations of endearment instead of derision. Steve, I look forward to your comments on global warming on your blog as I sit here freezing my posterior off with a current outside temperature of -5C, snow on the ground from the blizzard over the weekend that dumped 30cm of the white stuff, and expecting more in the next couple of days...

This time of year we should be 20C warmer at our latitudes. Even though the current weather is atypical for around my neck of the woods, the point I'm trying to make is that we really have no idea what are the typical long term weather / temperature cycles and ideals for our planet are, given the extremely short history of reliable record keeping as opposed to the age of the planet.

All we know is that at what science currently projects for us inhabitants, the conditions for OUR species will be unpleasant in the future.

In case you get the idea that I'm a denier, nothing could be further from the truth. Like the rest of the planet, weather is dynamic. Pumping Co2 into the atmosphere at the rate we do is bound to have an effect, just as deforestation and the various other ills civilization has burdened us with. It is unfortunately the price we pay to live our lifestyle.

Is it moral, or fair to less fortunate, or future generations is a totally different dicussion.

I do however sincerely look forward to your blog..jcw

It is clear, concise, well argued and reminds everyone of certain facts conveniently forgotten by many individuals while trying to show that their societies and personal clubs have always taken the highroad through out our combined blood thirsty history.

It is despicable and unfortunate that Expelled pushes all the right buttons for its intended audience, rather than being a well augmented documentary.

Is it not about time our side puts forth a similar documentary that appeals to its intended audience, not atheists in this case but theists. Surely, the funds for such a project could be found considering that many of the wealthiest people on this planet are atheists? jcw

Re Remnant... I miss Bizarro. At least he tried to support his arguments with out having to rush out and quote scripture from his holey book. jcw

Cartomancer:

I have a sneaking suspicion our friend Richard Morgan might be playing that dastard Robertson for all he's worth. Sounds too good to be true to my cynical ears...

I would tend to agree, but I wouldn't put it past RM, since he has on previous occasions threatened to take his ball and play somewhere else, but with some gentle coaxing returned.

Whatever makes him happy. I never did get an opportunity to argue the finer points of rugby vs ice-hockey though... pity. jcw
