3. Baby's 'miracle' recovery in British hospital to give Malta its first saint
Comment #44885 by amazeen on May 25, 2007 at 12:58 pm
First of all, I hate it when people say there is no scientific explanation for this or that. Of course there is, we just havenīt figured it out yet (or credulous idiots deny the explanation and through the power of repetition some wrong "explanation" becomes the accepted one).
Secondly, the doctor said that there was 90% + chance of the boy not surviving. Wait a minute, that means that there was a chance, lets say 5%, that the boy would survive. That means 1 out of every 20 babies that goes into acute liver failure does survive without a transplant. How is that a miracle??
The chance of rolling two sixes when two dice are rolled is 1 in 36, does that mean that every time someone gets a double six, we ought to give praise to some "saint"?
This story is absolute bollocks.

His thoughts on religion in itself were rather shallow, and he probably should have given his objections to religion more thought before going on television with them. However his views on how religion poisons politics were far more intelligent. He is a really good political analyst and we are fortunate to have him as an ally, if he concentrates on that analysis.

Mr. Moore makes a very common mistake which is to confuse conviction to dogmatism. Being convinced of ones stand does definately not mean one is not willing to changes ones mind, if presented with good evidence to do so.
on the pseudonyms issue: My surname is Amazeen, but I fully respect peoples choice to remain anonymous. However it can be very frustrating to see ad hominem attacks from people who write under a pseudonym. It is because of those people we have the saying:
"Fighting on the internet is like participating in the special olympics, you may win but you are still retarded" :)

Unfortunately this is not a joke, not a hoax and not an april fools spoof. These people are for real and I have heard of them several times, even though I donīt live in the US. These are the people that disrupt funerals of US soldiers, gays and others they donīt like. But as someone but it here above, this is a good lesson in christianity for those liberal "believers", if you think that silly book is correct than at least read it and know what it says.

The "mind of god" quote by Hawking is actually a reference to Einstein who said something like
"I want to know all Gods thoughts; all the rest are just details."

Some of the remarks here are similar to peoples objection of the vacum in earlier times. Some concepts are to strange to accept intuitively but are nevertheless confirmed with great accuracy by experiment.
I think it is extremely hard to make a list of the 10 smartest people in history, but Spinoza: What about Archimedes, Gauss, Poincare, von Neumann or the person I think is a contender for the top spot Alexandre Grothendieck.

Some here seem to have been offended by my remark here above.
I have the utmost respect for engineering and engineers, and alot of my friends have degrees in engineering.
But I do think there is a difference between science and engineering. Engineering is the application of science.
A physicist aplies mathematics, but is not necessarily a mathematician. Similarly an engineer is someone who applies science, but is not necessarily a scientist.
That was all I meant.
Comment #27004 by amazeen on March 22, 2007 at 8:04 pm
There seems to be some confusion here, engineering is not science.

To much moral relativism will be the death of civilization. If atheists do not fight for a more secular and rational society, religious fundamentalists will have their way, and turn the US and European countries into cesspools of dogmatic insanity.
27. Why there are almost no genuine atheists
Comment #24438 by amazeen on March 6, 2007 at 5:23 pm
It is very easy to come to the same conclusion professor Campos comes to if you equate atheism with having no morals. But as anyone who has bothered to read books by professor Dawkins (and most other atheist writers) knows, this is absurd. There is no need to envoke a supreme being to justify being a moral person.

What is a militant atheist? Correct me if Iīm wrong, in this debate the militants com from the other side. They are the ones bombing abortion clinics, they are the ones bombing trains, they are the ones flying planes into buildings, they are the ones setting embassies on fire because of cartoons, they are the ones attacking other countries when they rise to power. I do not know of any such incidents involving atheists acting in the name of atheism.
