My significant other (who thinks I'm mad) had been instructed to ensure we both have towels at all times. Starting now, as, it's already tomorrow in EnGerland.

Why are religious types always so selective in their hatred? Sure the bibly says that "gay people = teh bad(tm)", but the bibly also says that adultery should lead to death. Shagging while on the blob? Oooh, got some stones for ya!
Why the hang up with gay people?

SweatyPalmSunday:
"an abortion one day before birth is perfectly legal and accepted by the pro-choice crowd"
Really? Where would that be exactly? I believe you are presenting a false comparison. I don't think many people who support a womans right to choose believe it should be available the day before the child is due.
My personal line is the ability of the child to survive outside of the womb. If it can survive outside the woman, it's a person, before that, it's a blob! Modern medicine makes that younger and younger, and obviously coming up to that limit is a greyish place, 150 cells though? That's not a person, it's a mess in a dish!

While I understand your point about slightly more intelligent portrayals of science in certain shows... Aren't even those still part of the same pattern though? People watching CSI are too busy thinking about cheesy acting to worry about military spending, or disporportionate tax cuts, or any other serious issue facing them. Keep the populace distracted, with CSI, or sports, or whatever, and they won't be asking the ackward questions. To me the ultimate expression of this, is US news coverage. At a time when they're knee deep in a middle east war, they take a month out for wall to wall coverage of Anna Nicole Smith dying... Amazing!

@ #127412, why? You dispute this obviously? I think elfinabout is probably a lot closer to the mark than you obviously do.
Whetever one ascribes to the motives of it, it's hard not to deduce that those in charge of mass media are indeed trying to dumb down the populace. Stupidity is celebrated, the masses are distracted with sports or American Idol, or whatever.
Manufacturing Consent anyone?

I'm also a little surprised by the advocacy of torture. I'd posit that the people doing so need to look a little harder at their history books. It's an interesting point as to how the torture of Ayman al-Zawahiri by the Egyptians contributed to his later actions.

Dear Sir,
thank you for your service, and thank you for your support of reason.
Here's hoping for a return to good health, this world would be poorer without you in it.
Get well soon.

Wow, that's amazing. Think about how much it takes to get people out on the streets in the West... An impending war perhaps, or major social change. In Sudan, someone allowing children to name a teddy bear, a crime worthy of bringing people onto the streets, demanding a death. Freaking amazing!

People seem to be so defensive over this religion. As if explaining his beliefs were a treasonous request!
When did you cease to hold racist views?
What has primacy, the constitution or your religion?
The rest (magic underpants etc), is stooopid, but, not that important I guess.

Re: 85200 - We had a case here in BC where some JW's were refusing a transfusion for their children. The courts temporarily took charge of the children, gave them the blood, then, gave the kids back again (??#$?).
Of course, before the 50's JW's had no problem with blood transfusions, only vaccinations...

So, is it seriously the BJP's position that an army of monkeys built this? No, I doubt it, yet another example of using religion to control the public (look, the Gvmt is offending your religion, get them out and get us fun BJP people in instead).
Not much better than the Islamic myth of Adam standing on one foot for a thousand years though I guess.
It just boggles the imagination that people can hold on to such stupid myths, then, you remember the control element, the real reason that religions persist.
