I love you slashdot. I mean, Jerks? Stuff solar sats, it'll NEVER run out of power!

Great ideas, but the cynic in me now expects the daily mail or somebody to run with something unpleasant in relation to the Prof's words.

Back on topic.... Another idea that'll change everything - Geosynchronous solar mirror power generation (sorry, had to make it sound as pretentious and over the top as possible, it is one of those ideas).

The premise uses no technology we've not already developed, but its still pretty complex. Essentially, you start by getting an enormous number of small mirror satellites (I mean tiny, a few centimeters across but a vast number of these little fellows so the system is pretty fault tolerant) to a point relative to the earth that's always in the sunlight. Then mirror the light to thermal towers back on earth. Its the exact principle of solar thermal power plants on the ground, only these things will be capable of working 24/7, anywhere on the planet.

Energy crisis solved. Permanently.

...And Obama's technology guys are pondering it.

...But I should also mention that it's got solar death ray potential. On the flip side, anyone who's played the video game Sim City, don't be so worried about the beam frying buildings - the thermal plants will be built in the middle of nowhere, and the fact that the individual mirrors are tiny means that a few misalignments are probably going to be the right size to create the kind of glint that cats will chase.

Ok, that's my crazy sci-fi idea fix for the day met! :)

*well, I say all existing techology - we've made parabolic mirrors on the ground, but i don't think they've been built in space... ah.

Comment #311335 by DamnDirtyApe on January 3, 2009 at 5:40 am

The middle east will continue to be a male dominated theocratic anti-intellectual racist homophobic place for a very long time. A lot of people will have to spend that time working very hard to change that.

It took decades, centuries perhaps for us to diminish those qualities. And they're still around in various capacities.

Has to be biotechnology. Cybernetics, genetic manipulation, neurochemistry, neural interfaces... There's nothing that makes any of those impossible imho.

Couple that with intelligent software and our world will start to resemble the Japanese animation Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. In fact there's one bit in the series where the sentient tanks are discussing Dawkins.

I like that idea. The problem is that would be too simple and too effective to ever be implemented by politicians.

This whole subject (pun very much intended) brings out the cynic in me.

Also for other examples I suggest the excellent 'Louis Theroux in Johannesberg' on iplayer. Rather than education, this time Louis' focus is on law enforcement!

Relevant side note, on the subject of 'destroying from within'.

Does anyone recall that absolutely wretched man, Robert Kilroy-Silk? I recall him stating in a press conference post his election to the European Parliament, that his objective was to 'wreck it'. Now whatever you views on the EU, that doesn't strike me as a win for democracy.

I mean, wtf?

I'm paranoid I've been put on some kind of crazy list for reasons I couldn't even venture a guess at.

I'm holding out for the day someone records a meteor impact and puts it on youtube. It could certainly happen. This is pretty darn close.

Comment #286007 by DamnDirtyApe on November 18, 2008 at 12:39 am

I'm a bit annoyed with the whole concept of positive atheism/negative atheism coined by some philosophers.

I think Atheism is a lot simpler than that. The dictionary definition is enough for me.

49. Islamic radicals make mockery of hate laws

Comment #281513 by DamnDirtyApe on November 10, 2008 at 1:49 pm

I'm no fan of Jacqui '42 days' Smith, but these guys are bad, bad, baaaaaaaad...

When a woman in a burkha asked how he could justify this when Islam was supposed to be a religion of peace, the crowd mocked her. But it was Choudary who rose to put her in her place. "Islam is not a religion of peace," he said. "It is a religion of submission. We need to submit to the will of Allah."

At least they're digging their own graves. I just hope they're prevented from taking anybody with them.

50. Obama will move to veto Bush laws

Comment #281496 by DamnDirtyApe on November 10, 2008 at 1:07 pm

I think we can all agree that we need to reason our way out of the oil dependency. And I'm sufficiently confident Obama will do at least something to support it.

Heck even Bush tried to push for biofuels and a hydrogen economy. I'd hope Obama does something big to help out renewables. They can work, they just need some incentive.
