1. Autism and Vaccines: Why Bad Logic Trumps Science

I don't like this article because the large study turned out to be only 38 children. I think that is very misleading and hurts the credibility of the author.

So if we ignore the old testament, the teachings of Jesus relating to burning in hell and the description of a supernatural god; then religion is really great because it gives us morality we couldn't find anywhere else??

What this study shows is a challenge to all of us atheists. And its a pretty big challenge so we would do well to concentrate on it. How do we fullfil the social and moral aspects of religion (the strong sense of community, the easily understood moral rules) in our children when we are atheists?

Why is this a challenge? There are many secular ways to match the social aspects of religion. We do not need atheist organizations that mimic religion to get these social benefits. Join a club, team, etc. according to the family's interests. These type of things give the social benefits of church and more. The moral issue is easy, there is no good morality that religion gives that is not easy to impart to our children in a simple secular way.

Of course religious children would do better under those criteria. It amounted to what children stay quiet and do what they are told. Shocking that religious kids would make better robots!

That is not my definition of good.

We also, apparently, cannot know that rape is wrong without checking with the Bible. Huh. I'd say it's wrong because it can deeply harm and traumatize another person, and if someone cannot understand that arguement, then they're the one with the problem, not I.

Maybe religion needs to be around to restrain immoral people like Wilson. I actually get a little scared when I think what would happen in America without religion. Many of these people are violent nutjobs with their god looking down on them, what kind of harm would they do if that god disappeared?

These people have been to my small town twice now and they are very scary. They had graphic signs showing the dead Mathew Sheppard saying he was in hell. It was an incredibly offensive display. Their other signs were just simple God Hates Fags crap.

They were here just because our town adopted a city bumper sticker that happened to have a rainbow on it. They are really nuts.
