When Richard Dawkins asked Paula Kirby to write a review of mine, and other Christian books, I was sent several e-mails by atheists accusing me of cowardice, running away and not being able to refute Paula's arguments.
OK, own up, any of you atheists out there who did this.

I do like Shakespeare, I love this quote from Hamlet Act 1 Scene 3 that I quoted to David a long time ago:
Do not, as some ungracious pastors do,
Show me the steep and thorny way to heaven;
Whiles, like a puffed and reckless libertine,
Himself the primrose path of dalliance treads,
And recks not his own rede
Sums David up rather nicely!
Artful, do you have any opinions on what I provided earlier?

Dear Dr Dawkins,
You are absolutely correct. This video is disgusting beyond belief. However I am almost as revolted by your behaviour in using the antics of these sick people as a justification for your atheistic arguments. It is the ultimate in ad hominem argument.

Dear Dr Dawkins,
Sadly I wake up to find that it is even worse than predicted. Every single one of your disciples (even the 'nice' J) has written in your defence and in so doing has proved my point â€" that those who follow you on this site will make the direct link between the Phelps family and all religion. It was inevitable but nonetheless still disappointing. Just read through their posts and you will see how chilling, inane and sad it all is. And it is your responsibility. You feed them this garbage and they lap it up.

"If Wee Flea wrote a book on Dennett I would rush to buy with cash money. Please David, hell anyone, read Dennett and give it a bash..."
I'm tempted! But forgive if I do not behave like a fundamentalist atheist and actually wait until I have read the whole book.
366. Comment #60473 by Philip1978 â€" my answer was not one of 'warm' theology. You are arguing the age old question of theodicy and the relationship between human suffering, responsibility, freedom and prayer. Unfortunately I cannot give you the simplistic formulaic answer that you crave . I have to deal with these situations every week â€" for example yesterday we had a six year old girl die. So you will forgive me not exactly feeling enamoured at your using people's suffering to score cheap points. The bottom line is that your friend suffered because someone beat her up â€" not God. So why are you angry at a god you do not believe exists?

Artful Dodger,
I am sorry to see you go I truly am, I am sorry you can't see David for who he truly is - I and several others actually gave David a chance time and time again to actually debate and talk properly. He doesn't want to, prefers to insult people, I am fed up with his lies and distortions plus his lust for a limelight he doesn't deserve. I have spoken to many religious people on this site and on the whole had a good, interesting time - Mark Taunton is a good example, Fides, Revcourt, Brother John to name a few others. Yes we disagreed on loads, possibly hurled a few insults but on the whole it has been peaceful enough. David is the first one to really do his best to go out of his way to be completely monoxious. If he is to say these nasty, incorrect things to people, I know he loves the abuse, then he should expect to be treated as such.
I want you to stay, chat, see if even we can come to some agreement, but don't leave on David's account, he is not worth it

People need to be very careful of David. He is far worse than an average troll. He is a parasite. He comes to provoke, and he does so in many ways. He tries to play some people off against others. He tries to push buttons to get responses (like comparing gay men to child molesters, or atheists to facist bullies), he attempts to emotionally manipulate people with claims that he is being attacked and censored.

Ok back on topic, bad me :)
I seem to remember having a bit of a go at Thermothug for insulting Anna's intellect on an earlier thread - the stupid idiot had made a galactic sized stupid assumption about her without even thinking about what he had said.
These books are making similarly stupid assumptions about what atheism is about - there is no looking at the intelligence of the arguments in front of them or if the arguments are valid and workable. They just point out that atheism is just a provocation to wild abandon and blame the authors of books like TGD for spreading these ideas.
Nowhere in any book about atheism have I seen any motion to war or segregation of religious people - just a desire to make people aware that life has more to it than what religion has on offer and that it can continue happily without it. With the likes of David Robertson & co saying it will end up in a nightmare similar to that of Nazi Germany simply invites more stupidity to be spread around.
This is where my mind doth boggle - religion, belief in a deity that demands worship and love OR ELSE is somehow better than a life of simply being responsible for your actions and words without invoking a deity as an outside, untouchable and unapproachable authority on matters which deserve more rational thought.
People think I am mad for being an optimistic tea drinking loon and I accept it but I will not accept I am wrong for simply being me and not saying something invisible and highly improbable is justification for it all! :)

Cartomancer,
I have a question sir, when the Papacy moved to Avignon in 1309 do you know if that had any effect on the rules and regulations at all? I would have guessed that Philip IV, after getting Bernard De Goth (What a brilliant name!) aka Pope Clement V under his control that things would have changed quite drastically. Since the Pope was effectively answering to a King instead of God directly I was wondering if things changed a lot in terms of doctrine?

Mark Taunton was fun to chat to, I enjoyed that tons, good man. Yes it was a bit McGrathish but I still was impressed by his bible and historical knowledge.
Quetz is dead right, I have always though that about David, he is a Reverend, he spends most of his time talking to his "flock" as it were. I also imagine he is well known in the community and from previous posts he has said he offers out advice to those who come to him for it. Somebody disagreeing with him, especially quite strongly as he has found on here and in books like TGD must be quite grating.
Fundamentalist Atheist indeed! MWHAHAHAHAHA etc I think SWRB did very well on this (I REALLY dont believe in God!!) But I still also think that David honestly assumes that since Atheists have no God, we have no guidance from an invisible figment of his imagination, we are all hell bound and more susceptible to want to do bad things. He only knows one way, unable to even dare to break out and find new shores.

Here be mine, well, the books that made a massive impact on my life:
Douglas Adams - Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Douglas Adams - Long Dark Tea Time of the Soul
J R R Tolkien - The Lord of the Rings -I have a massive book so I count it as one :)
Terry Pratchett - The Last Hero
Richard Dawkins - The God Delusion
Douglas Adams has always been a part of my life, got his books very early on and loved them. The Lord of the Rings was the first proper Epic book I ever read. My first intro to Terry Pratchett made me laugh so much, he had to be included, very clever book and writer. The God Delusion was a great inspirational book for me, it made me want to learn about religion and science more - I think its had a good impact on me :)
I have loads of other stuff like Shakespeare and Keats but I dont think I could class them as novels!

Excellent post, I like it tons, all I would say is from my experiences of refuting religion I think its important to have such a wide scope of subjects to show how religion is not the "Truth" that it claims to be.
History, Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Common Sense are just a few of the approaches you could use to refute any claims that religions make, I think its a great thing to be able to a) argue in favour of your chosen field b) be enthusiastic about learning from others - I have learned magnificent things from everybody on this site and I still am.
Krisking
I admire your interest in the God delusion, keep going and telling us what you think when you get to the end. What I would suggest is that you understand that Professor Dawkins, in my opinion, was hoping his book would raise conciousness about eradicating the ideas and truths of religion. Religions claim to have a knowledge and truth about a lot of things which cannot be verified asides from invoking a deity or the bible as proof. My impression of what Professor Dawkins is doing is providing a less complicated and more explainable solution. I do hope you enjoy the book, I found it fascinating.

Billy, you did ask for Tea to be sent to Almighty Quetz, so you ask of me in His name, so it shall be done!
I also give one unto Diacanu, I liked your posts to David so much, you deserve a good cuppa sir!
Rick M
I have had magnificent discussions with David about history, there is real history and David's muddy and clouded version of it. Imagine if you will a man that thinks God loves and hates him and then imagine what his view of history might be and there you have it. I kept pressing him about the Council on Nicaea, in 325, when a bunch of human men VOTED on what goes in the bible, holy days and the nice big one about Jesus either being divine or a carpenter's son. (This all being done to further Emperor Constantine's power and influence in the Wroman, no Roman, STWIKE HIM (sorry, I can't help it!) Empire. I pointed out to our hero reverend that things like this show humans direct religion, not Gods - David never managed to answer my questions on this and shed loads of other history questions like the existence of Jesus, the Bible being a collection of metaphors from Near Eastern religions etc etc
Diacanu has got this totally right, you can pester David all you want but the fingers always manage to find their way into his ears at some point and the chanting issues forthwith.
My advice to you is don't bother with him, there are better religious people to debate history with and arguing with David about it is pointless. I however would love to hear if you have read any cool books on the subject, one I would thoroughly recommend is The Messiah Myth, The Near Eastern Roots of Jesus and David by Thomas L Thompson (Pimlico 2007) Brilliant book, very informative, the guy knows his Bible and he knows his history.
Right, I need more Tea myself! :)

Look at this whining
"At least Christians believe in free speech", oh I have been set upon, oh poor wretched me!
David, you know full well why you got banned 3 times its because you are monoxious! (Poisonously Obnoxious!)You insulted all and sundry and basked in the glow of being told off for it so don't act all pathetic. The arrogance with which you then come back here to troll once more, knowing full well you are not in the least bit welcome, shows Steve is completely right.
You had your chance, you blew it, 3 times, possibly on purpose and are hiding behind this mask of pretend innocence and victimisation.
All I think I have left to add is that this reminds me of a Radiohead song called Just from The Bends album, sing along if you know it :)
Can't get the stink off
He's been hanging round for days
Comes like a comet
Suckered you but not your friends
One day he'll get to you
And teach you how to be a holy cow
You do it to yourself, you do
and that's what really hurts
You do it to yourself, just you
you and no-one else
You do it to yourself
You do it to yourself
Don't get my sympathy
Hanging out the 15th floor
changed the locks three times
He still comes reeling through the door
and they'll get to you
And teach you how to get to purest hell
You do it to yourself, you do
and that's what really hurts
You do it to yourself, just you
you and no-one else
You do it to yourself
You do it to yourself
Post your rebuttal, whine, moan, froth all you like at Paula, mis-quote her a bit, twist her words around and then leave will you,? I for one want your ban to stay because you will just get another one anyway and this saves Josh a lot of work!

I remember from ALL my attempts to discuss things with you you just spat it back at me with that arrogant self-righteous and bullying manner that is your sole method of debate.
Yet you still sit there like a victim saying "oh those cruel fundamentalist atheists are being so nasty to poor innocent me!" Jumping on the bandwagon of spreading lies about people who don't believe in your figment of your imagination is reprehensible to the core! You brought this on yourself so reap what you have sown, if you insult and lie about people, expect to be treated like this!
The fact that you think since I do not believe in your God I have the same morals as Hitler tells me that any further discussion will be clouded with your ridiculous prejudices thus rendering it completely pointless.

V and Yorker
I cannot express with words just how sorry I am to hear about Yorker's daughter, cancer is the one disease that has haunted my life because of all the people I have lost to it and I have recently found out two more good friends have been diagnosed with it and I worry about the outcome.
But what also I am not able to express with the right words is my admiration and overwhelming happiness that you two finally found each other. From all the harshness that life can throw at people there is something to live for, something worthwhile and right - love. I think this sentence really sums it up for me
Love always feels right and engenders mutual trust....Once forged, such a blending is virtually impenetrable by outside influence.

Omnitard,
What exactly do you get confused by when I ask for intelligent discussion?
I know very little about thermodynamics and how those laws could be broken, if you could help me with that instead of resorting to the same crap that seems to be your wont I would be most grateful
