551. Morality and the 'new atheism'

MPhil,

Nontheist is a better term. The term atheist implies, at least, the knowledge/understanding of the term theist - in order to be a-theist.

epeeist - "Of course there can be such a thing as an "atheist child", if you don't teach a child about gods it will be the natural position."

can a child who has no concept of god be dubbed an atheist if an atheist is the negative of a theist conceptually?

a more neutral term would be needed.

I think all the theists arguments against atheism is just a reflection of their inability to let go of their addiction to the concept of god - the big daddy in the sky who will save them from the fear of death.

I challenge Vox Day (the angry little man) to produce one bit of actual evidence for the existence of his god other than words arranged into tripe.

When I'm in the country and gaze upon the night sky I get a sense of wonder, its a good feeling. But I wouldn't denegrate the experience as a religious one.

the youtube links have a few episodes. Hope you got time to check them out I think it would be worth it - they really changed my thinking about current theories in cosmology.

Check out http://www.holoscience.com for the latest research in cosmology.

The work of Halton Arp (cosmology) and Wallace Thornhill (physics) is interesting and challenges many of the popular theories today - with evidence! Not just cerebral gymnastics.

"As we apply our reason to our urge to be altruistic, and as we become more interconnected with strangers, we see fewer reasons to put people into the "out group". Our psychological "in group" expands until in some people it covers not just the whole human race, but sentient non-human animals too."

"For my part, I think an important answer was provided by the ancients - virtue or self-respect. (And isn't it interesting that "virtue ethics" is making a comeback in academic philosophy?)"

I think this is what Prince Siddhattha was trying to say circa 500BCE

I just signed the e-petition.

It's only a small action but it's a start for the sake of human rights in the world we live in. Hopefully Sayed Pervez Kambaksh's life is spared for that which we take for granted in our civilized and enlightened societies.

Kardashovel - "For my part, I cannot resist making theories to explain such a bizarre and exceedingly unlikely occurrence such as our universe."

Our universe is 100% likely - because it is here.

You can make up as many theories as you like - does any actual evidence support them?

God created himself? Now that's getting desperate.

Why not let go of the concept of God altogether? And learn to appreciate things as they really are.
