But given his last few posts, I think he's becoming unhinged and will end up muttering, "Nomad - sterilize," until his head explodes.

Why?

Edit: Surely not because it's silly?

The comments on the YouTube page are interesting - I looked at them again, and it seems that when the video was first posted 2 months ago, the commenters were all religious nut jobs arguing with each other. Recently, it seems a bunch of atheists (like us) have got wind of it (hmm, was that a pun?) and are posting much more entertaining comments!

As for the redistribution of wealth, I would like to see the Wall Street types, who receive bonuses of several millions of dollars, be the prime target of this.

Oh, Rod you are so uninformed! What is all this blathering about Wall Street types having received "millions" of dollars?

It's billions, with a "B."

When you decide not to, you should be punished with starvation. This is Human Darwinian Evolution in my opinion.

As Richard Dawkins has explained many times, evolution DEscribes how things came about, it does not PREscribe how things SHOULD be.

DP, if you ever get to read these threads, this is what a lack of government does to a country. This is what one is reduced to without taxes being paid.

Not likely - DP is a monomaniac (or, as widely suspected, a computer program)

And just to add to the thread, I went to a local sushi place last week where the chef's choice (omakase) came arranged on a pile of pelletized ice covering a blue LED ice cube with a little bowl of dry ice and water lending a misty aura to the whole eerily glowing presentation. It was a little over the top. But the fish was good.

And here's a cocktail for the techno-geeks (and I use that term in the most worshipping way ;-))

Purple Haze Cocktail
Adapted from “The Hungry Scientist Handbook” by Patrick Buckley and Lily Binns (Collins Living, 2008)

Time: 2 minutes

About 2 cups food-grade dry ice chips

4 ounces gin

1 ounce crème de violette (violet liqueur) or crème de cassis

1 ounce lemon juice.

1. Place 8 to 10 chips dry ice in large martini shaker or other container. Add remaining ingredients. As soon as you do so, the mixture will start bubbling and spewing out gas. Cover loosely, and stir or swirl to chill through, at least 30 seconds. (Do not make container airtight.)

2. Strain into martini glass, add one small chip dry ice, and let bubble until completely dissolved. Serve.

Yield: 2 cocktails.

Note: Do not handle dry ice with bare hands; use spoon or tongs. Do not mix dry ice with regular ice. Do not put dry ice in mouth or touch with lips. Dry ice is available via distributors on dryiceinfo.com or at Chinatown Ice Cream Factory.

Edit: Is this helping the 10K drive? I could go on.

DP - I don't think the righteous indignation thing is going to fly. After weeks of insulting posters here by smearing them with every conservative talk show stereotype, insisting that they hold views which they have repudiated, twisting their words to try to make them appear to be saying something indefensible, and doing it all in such a contemptuous, sneering way, I don't think you have much justification for claiming to be insulted.

1. I.e. (for instance) insisting that those who are concerned about upholding the rule of law want to give rights to terrorists. That's insulting.
2. (Speaking of the rule of law), insisting that those who support Obama are somehow abetting terrorism because Obama had an association with someone who, way back when, was behind things that were reprehensibl - which things Obama himself has repudiated. That's insulting.
3. Time after time accusing those who are not happy with McCain's choices of regarding Obama as "the messiah" in spite of their repeated assertions that they are not all that enthusiastic about Obama either. That's insulting.
4. Accusing people who believe that society should help those who CANNOT help themselves of being "whining" democrats who want to blame all THEIR problems on "somebody else." That's insulting.

Since some people on this thread felt compelled to share THEIR stories, which were anything but vague, and addressed some of the specific hardships which poor people face, I thought that your narrative was, in comparison, vague and seemed to be cashing in on stereotypes about "the immigrant experience."

So, yes, I absolutely suggested that you are a liar (although it seems to me that continuing to insist that people do not believe what they purport to believe is calling them "liars," it seems the liar thing is not going to be a slam-dunk argument).

Lastly, your reading skills seem to be as poor as your writing skills - I never attacked your parents, I attacked YOU for (as I speculated) LYING about your parents.

I probably should have addressed you directly, but your history of responding to direct confrontation is - hmmm - you've been pretty darn snarky.

Edit: edited to eliminate those annoying "quote" thingys.

Sciros - I asked those question because DP often makes use of salient exemplars when making his arguments and his vague history sounded like a combination of several different cliches. Other people on this thread gave details of their immigrant experience, details such as you did. I'm only sorry I wasn't able to stick around long enough for the answers last night or early this morning - answers which were pretty interesting in themselves. As a child of a very poor American mother and a non-English speaking immigrant father, I don't "smugly" ask these questions. Others have expressed a growing reluctance to take DP at face value.

Edit: I have to be somewhere, so I'll have to pick this up again later.

Comment #266890 by Caudimordax on October 19, 2008 at 8:36 pm

I've been thinking (always dangerous):

DP has given us this narrative about his parents who "came to this country not knowing a word of english and only having a couple of hundred bucks in their pockets."

When? With only a couple of hundred bucks, how did they get here? Cheap flight? Ship? Sneaking over the border?

He describes an apartment building with rapes in the hallways and drug dealing out in the open - but these are the sorts of things that take place in "the Projects," (like where my grandmother lived) and not where recent immigrants live. There may be a lot of bad things to say about Chinese, Vietnamese and Haitian ghettoes, but they are not the same as "the Projects."

Assuming they came here legally, how did they find a place to stay with "a couple of hundred bucks in their pockets?" They wouldn't qualify for "the Projects." How did they find jobs, not speaking English? (Since DP implies they were completely on their own, unlike most immigrants)

DP claims he had a wonderful role model in his parents who "busted there whole life to give me and my brother a better life." Apparently it wasn't that great a role model, since he didn't apply himself in high school. How did he graduate from high school (if he did) without being able to construct a sentence? (Pace, NCLB opponents, you're speaking to the choir.)

And, generally, people who have REALLY come from privation are usually (not always) appreciative of the help they got and compassionate towards others in the same situation.

Hellene -

"I wonder why McCain didn't select General Powell for a running mate?"

Because McCain is being handled by the Rovians, and because Powell doesn't arouse "the base," i.e. frothing-at-the-mouth anti-abortion, anti-gay whack-jobs, which happen to be the constituency that Republicans absolutely need to win the election.
