I will not be telling them the universe is 6000 years old.

I will not be telling them a sky daddy watches their every move.

Children have to be taught SOMETHING, don't they? Do you advocate leaving children on their own to let them learn things randomly? We teach them all sorts of things.
I certainly was not 'taught' all sorts of 'childish' things. I learnt how to read, write and do maths. I learnt about history, science, engineering, nature etc. None of these are childish 'thing's'. You can simplify an explanation for a child, but you DO NOT TEACH THEM LIES. A seven year old may not be able to understand quantum mechanics, but they can learn how a simple electrical circuit with a battery an a bulb works and that electron's 'flow' around the closed circuit and their energy is used to light (and heat) the bulb.

When they're young, of course you read them Chicken Little, nursery rhymes etc. but you sure as fuck don't end it by saying 'you have to believe this really happened - for the rest of your life - otherwise you're not a good person and won't get into a (fictional) heaven.

Children need education and information - not pig ignorant bullshit dressed up as fact. [/rant]

They are delusional. The least delusional think 'but there must be something more than this life. The most delusional and up living in caves and dropping logs on their own heads. We get to call the latter 'schizophrenics' and they get medical treatment.

Childhood indoctrination is a form of mental child abuse. I could write for years on this, but instead am currently undoing years of psychological damage done to someone by this.

Dawkins presentations of his case give an opening to critics to claim that he is blind to any evidence against his position.
Around here, we've been asking for this 'evidence' for years. Strangely enough, nothing that constitutes 'evidence' is ever presented.

The only reasonable conclusion to reach is that there is no evidence against his position.

A welcome change for those of us that abhor prejudice and intolerance.

These days, with almost everything he does or says, Blair sinks further into the mire. I'm not sure he really knows what he believes about anything, but he certainly knows that he does believe it, and that he's right.

He's a firm believer that a Christian voice (ie church representatives) needs to be represented in political debates. He's also a main member of the Parlimentary Prayer Group.
Uh oh...shades of Bush and Blair, I'm afraid. Too close to nutter territory for my liking. If he really believes those 'prayers' actually affect the world, well, insert the missing adjective please.

Indeed. It may well not be at all important. As I say, he seems a decent enough chap and best of luck to him.

Politicians certainly suck up to the faith community, thereby giving it the oxygen of respectibility that it does not deserve. After all, it's about getting votes. Rather tricky to do if you publicly state to a large tranche of your electorate 'you're deluded fools, how can you believe such tripe?'

Anyway, I'm on the extreme wing of the atheist non-movement, as you may have gathered. After all, I am one of the few people who regard that Christopher Hitchens is just too polite...

Edit: Having read this post, I'm not quite sure what I'm saying here. Oh, well, buggrit. I'm sure you understand where I'm coming from.

We're an incredibly secular country, hell, I don't even know if Kevin Rudd (our current Prime Minister) is even religious! Becuase it just doesn't matter here.

It doesn't matter? I strongly disagree. In this day and age, that someone in charge of a major government believes a collection of tales written by camel herding primitives, is quite important. He may, at one crucial juncture, decide he's on some kind of messianic mission.

He seems a decent enough sort. A caring, intelligent, thoughtful man. But then again, so seemed Blair. And his imaginary friend said it was OK to invade another country, and a million real people shouting 'No' in the streets couldn't make him see reason.

(Wanders off, expecting to be castigated for his views...)

The more they say that flies in the face of reason and science, the more convinced a freethinker can be that it is end-to-end bollocks.

You almost remind me of Carcer Dun, the villain from the Terry Pratchet book, Nightwatch
For me, he is more like Colonel Cargill:

Colonel Cargill was so awful a marketing executive that his services were much sought after by firms eager to establish losses for tax purposes. His prices were high, for failure often did not come easily. He had to start at the top and work his way the down, and with sympathetic friends in Washington, losing money was no simple matter. It took months of hard work and careful misplanning. He was a self-made man who owed his lack of success to nobody. - Joseph Heller, Catch-22
