Kardashovel, you still didn't answer my question completely. Tell us your conversion story from atheism to Christianity. What led you to conclude that it was correct?

I'll also echo Goldy and tell you that it took a LOT of critical thinking for me to get where I am now. It wasn't easy and it still isn't easy.

[sarcasm]Ah, ok. Everyone, apparently Kardashovel is way beyond our intelligence level and we should all bow down to him, for HE, is the correct interpreter of the scripture; God's own appointee!![/sarcasm]

I think that comment should go down in history as the single best example of circular reasoning on the planet, Kardashovel. Congratulations!

And another thing, you said that you were raised as an atheist. Why the f*** did you choose Christianity of all the other available religions? What was wrong with Islam, Hindu, Buddhism, etc? If I were going to pick a religion....oh wait...nm

Comment #119241 by annabanana on January 31, 2008 at 12:24 pm

Also, throughout your whole diatribe, you speak about your particular interpretation of scripture as the reason why you believe what you believe. What makes you think that your interpretation is better than someone with a different interpretation than yours? Are you so arrogant to assume that your understanding is much superior to a good percentage of other people?

He needs to be that way, so that he can exist

Why? Why is his existence contingent on him/her/it being a good and just god?

I have no proof of this, but I think it would be an educated guess to say that there are as many variations on Christianity as there are Christians in the world.

f I may be so bold as to conjecture, I would suggest that you feel this way because someone that refuses to test their faith with science would be particularly easy for you to defeat or ignore. You don't like faith heads stomping on your sacred ground of science, do you?

No, it's because starting with a conclusion and cherry-picking for "evidence" to support it is opposite from the way science actually works. It is scientific and intellectual dishonesty.

Comment #119203 by annabanana on January 31, 2008 at 11:49 am

Steve, yes, cherry-picking science to support one's arguments is particularly annoying to me, as well. Dinesh does it constantly and it irks me to no end.

Kardashovel, I am sorry that you haven't been around long enough to have read some of my more serious arguments. However, I will direct you to the link on this comment and others of mine that says "other comments by annabanana" where you can see that I have indeed made many serious arguments on this forum along with some friendly chatting along the way.

If you would like me to take a beef with something in particular that you said, I can and I will. I think Steve has covered the physics topics fairly well, so I'll move on to some of the theological arguments.

You said that it is not necessary to believe in God or Jesus in order to get into heaven. How do you know this? I don't recall ever studying those passages in my Biblical Religion course or in my other readings of the Bible. If you are contending that you have some sort of special relationship with God and/or Jesus where he explicitly tells you things like this, I would like you to provide some proof. Other than the two options I have explored, I don't know how you would come to the conclusion that people who do not believe in God and/or Jesus can still get into heaven or some sort of a purgatory at least by simply living good lives. I would ask you to explain how you came to this conclusion and what proof you have that this is correct.

Nevermind proving God and/or Jesus even exist in the first place.

Comment #119177 by annabanana on January 31, 2008 at 11:22 am

Lol, Thank you, Steve. Normally, I prefer just to say something intelligent to prove whoever it is wrong, but at least 2 of the theists on this particular thread chose to make remarks of aforementioned effect, so I could no longer keep my mouth shut.

Also, they were making so many egregious errors, I couldn't quite decide to which one I wanted to respond intelligently. And perhaps this is the wrong attitude to have, but I couldn't help but to think that no matter what brilliant argument was put before them, they would simply wave it away and stick to what they have already decided for themselves.

Kardashovel, I thought you were leaving?

A number of people on this site have spoken to me in as if I were simply a silly little girl. I tire of it very quickly as I think that the things I say are usually fairly intelligent, I would say.

If you are unable to recognize the atrocious logical errors that you have made when Steve points them out, I doubt that any that I point out will convince you either.

By the way, while we are on the subject of looks, I think ninja turtles are hotter than pirates.

Sinners may still be saved from this fate by grace, even if they are VeryNaughtyBoy's that don't believe in God... as long as they don't categorically reject the Holy Spirit. So, fear not. You probably aren't going to hell, as your name is probably written in the book of life.

[sarcasm]Well, thank the Flying Spaghetti Monster, we're not going to hell after all! I was so worried! Aren't you guys relieved?

But what's a pretty little betty like myself doing posting on this site in the first place? I forgot my place was in the kitchen.[/sarcasm]

Personal anecdote is by no means indicative of an actual trend.

But if you'd like to start some sort of a statistic, I'll give you my reason:

I became an atheist because it made sense! Believing in God doesn't. I wasn't recoiling from anything.

Also, as an aside, what does being a "betty" have to do with anything?

Yes, GoneGolfing, and if you do choose the violence option, where does it end? How do you decide who to kill and who not to kill? What if there's a muslim leader who advocates more women's rights, but at the same time murder for all apostates? What do you do with someone like that?

Then there's always the consequence of retaliation.

669. 'Irrational Atheist' trounces God-deniers

Comment #118947 by annabanana on January 31, 2008 at 7:52 am

Many atheists that I have met are recoiling from a very ugly picture of God that reflects the fear and loathing that his unrighteous "followers" loan to the unscrupulous "leaders" that hypocritically seek only power.

And what proof do you have of this? Have you conducted a study? Has someone else conducted a study. That's a very broad, unfounded assertion you're making.

al-rawandi, whenever I see Fanusi pop up on a thread, I immediately know 2 things:
1)It somehow relates to muslims/Islam.
2)I don't want to participate in the debate. :)

Did you miss all of the debates he had with briancoughlinsworld? It was intense, to say the least.

I get really frustrated when I read about things like this because I can't decide what side of the fence I'm on. I mean, obviously, I think something needs to be done about fundamental Islam, but what? There are people on here who advocate violence and those that advocate diplomacy and it seems impossible to know which one is appropriate.

But since the Will to Power exists with distressing, Darwininan frequency among the more-charismatic males of the species, and since statistical historical evidence suggests that Atheism+Will To Power=Rampant Genocide, even of one's own subjects, to a greater order of magnitude than Theism+Will To Power ever did, it Gives One Pause.

I can hardly type I'm laughing so hard. I'll direct you to the many arguments in the God Delusion and also on this site and others which refute this exact argument.

Should we remove all of Steve's blood tests, his tax returns, his Social Security number, his place of residence, his job title and his dinner jacket, there, resplendent, would be Steve!

Of course, there would be Steve! Many people can see him and touch him and hear him and it is testable that he is there. Last time I checked, you couldn't see or touch or hear or test that a god or gods is there. You've refuted yourself. We needn't do it for you.

Darlings! Yoo-hoo! Have any of you actually read the book?

Had you actually bothered to read any of our posts you would see that most of us have not read the book and we all gave explicit reason why we did not read or do not intend to read the book. These reasons range from the sampling of Mr. Vox's apparent style from the interview to him having to ride the coattails of Sam Harris in order to gain notice. Until some brilliant examples from his writing that show the "problems" of the "four horsemen" have been provided by you or someone else, all we have to go on are reviews, interviews, and covers. All indications thus far is that this book isn't worth our time and no amount of speaking to us in a condescending tone will change that.

I thought that there was a possibility that nordicthunder was trying to be ironic, but judging by the poor grammar and unsupported assertions, I thought it to be accidental. Additionally, I supported my argument for judging this book by its cover and no where in my argument did I ever say that judging a book by its cover is appropriate in all instances.

Also, thanks al-rawandi!
