I'll admit I was wrong.

I have suggested that appleby is an ignorant, bigoted, misogynistic, racist, homophobic cunt on this thread. I apologise unreservedly for not including the words 'rank hypocrite' in the list.

I can only hope that you, my good friends, will find it in your hearts to forgive me. I am so ashamed of my omission in this matter.

I'm so, so, sorry.

A lion does not ask a gazelle for it's consent prior to hunting and eating it. Do you think it should? Or that, as consent can't be given, that it should do it anyway?

Yet, we do much worse to animals (hunt, slaughter etc.) without their consent and think little of it.
Bullshit. We have laws governing animal husbandry and mandating methods of slaughter.

I have some trouble with the fundamental idea of "consent" being the basis for sexual relations. It is quite reasonable between humans (we cannot force people to have sex) but when applied to animals, it seems to have an automatic ruling.
Why is it quite reasonable between humans but not reasonable between humans and other animal species. Justify your assertion.

Edit: The underlining was added, because, well, sometimes you just have to.

I am not aware of anyone here who would condone bestiality.

As to justification - are you claiming that there is some objective moral value that forbids such an act?

Then what is our basis for not condoning it?

Actually I asked the question first (refer Comment #188020 by Appleby).

And I don't have an answer. I'm trying to see if any of you, especially the homosexuals, do.

Comment #188020 by Appleby on June 3, 2008 at 6:53 am

I am simply trying to establish whether or not homosexuals view themselves (and consequently their rights) as somehow different from those who practice bestiality. If so, I would like to know what criteria they use and if these criteria have any basis in science, for one thing. The reason for this is because similar criteria could then perhaps be used to make the distinction between heterosexuals and homosexuals. I'm not looking for an excuse to discriminate against homosexuals but I think this line of reasoning and its unfortunate conclusion would be logically consistent. But please, correct me if you think I'm wrong.

So, precisely where did you ask the question why do we condemn bestiality?

It is plain to see that you asked: "I am simply trying to establish whether or not homosexuals view themselves (and consequently their rights) as somehow different from those who practice bestiality. If so, I would like to know what criteria they use and if these criteria have any basis in science, for one thing."

Or, more succintly to put in terms even you might grasp: 'Why do fags think they're any different to sheep shaggers?'

Which is not the same as (abbreviated): 'Why do we think it's wrong for me (Appleby) to fuck my cat?'

Answer epeeist's question.

Edit: Edited for clarity.

And in other circumstances?

Homosexual 'rights' do not come in to it,decisions must be made in the best interests of children. One example would be unadopted children: I think homosexuals should be allowed to adopt in these circumstances.

I could replace 'fucking cats' with 'homosexuality' almost word-for-word in your post (refer Comment #187371). And that's my point. You essentially have no reason to stop people from fucking cats (or any other animal for that matter) because of your support for homosexuality.
One word: consent.
And if I have to explain to you why a society where men fuck exclusively women is better off than one where men fuck other men...then you clearly have some twisted ideas.

I see two major concerns you raise in the 'free' versus 'free market' healthcare debate:

1. Quality of treatment.

2. Cost of treatment (through tax/insurance) to the patient.

These are both valid points - and important.

I am adding the 'fairness' concern. The trickiest of the lot...

I suppose my approach in life is to tend towards 'fairness' at the slight expense of, well, expense. Unlike FF, I'm pleased my tax pays for the treatment of people I may well never meet. (Yes, I am narked by how some of the money is spent, but no system is perfect). Society as a whole - of which I am part - benefits.

I am of the opinion that access to healthcare should be based on clinical need and not cost (to the patient). Others may have a different opinion.

You say that you and your sister are happy with government-run health care - I just hope you don't require a highly technical surgical procedure that puts you on a waiting list where you will never see a doctor. Are you also happy knowing that the amount of money that you give to the government in additional taxes could have easily paid for a private insurance program that would have been much more efficient?
1. Replacing aorta - not a tricky technical procedure? Is that why she's being operated on by one of the UK's top heart surgeons in a specialist unit?

2. More efficient - maybe, maybe not. How much of the 'efficiency savings' turn into 'profits'?

Because they could previously charge extortionate amounts - and if you couldn't afford it and died as a result, it was tough shit.
