I used to like Anthony Wedgewood-Benn.
I had no idea he was so stupid. His rationale belongs to the 1600s.
This is not a debate between science and religion.
It is reason against faith (otherwise Known as a debate between thinking about things and jumping to cocnclusions)
He is saying "I won't listen to you because what you are saying is not cosy enough for me.
Please leave me in my own cosy little world."
Even an atheist believes we should all be nice to one another - stunning revelation Tony thanks.

The Bible may have cultural worth. But as for a work of literature -it is very patronising to suggest it has any.
The bible is a translation of a translation of a translation..
I recently tried and I repeat tried to read the book of Job. The essential message can be understood by reading the 1st and last pages alone, the intervening pages ( and there are many)are repetetive horseshite and impoosible to understand horeshite at that. But then I supoose the thicker the book the more impressive it looks.

Christianity says There is one God. Worship him alone.
The constitution of the USA I believe claims to be secular. Ie you can worship a 100 gods if you like.

How can you pick and choose you common areas when no one asks you which unions you want to be party to and that choice is not constantly under revision. If you are refering to Nazism their history is a shared Human History. All humans must be vigilant that they are not ruled or fooled by thugs. Also individuals are no more responsible for the actions of their forefathers than we are for the actions of our grand children. If anyone of us lived in Germany at the time could we be sure we would have objected to Nazism let alone acted alone against it.
Remember the allies were not at war with National socialism, or antisemmitism they were only at war with a foreign power who had invaded another countries territory. Is there a country in the world that has not done that.

Religion in the UK is an institution a little like cricket and rugby. Nearly no-one participates but when asked or when a special occasion occurs millions of people claim allegiance like sheep. This is particularly annoying when the Boro - Bolton football match is on sky TV and the otherwise empty pubs are full of people watching Engerland play Australia/New Zealand/France eventhough they barely understand the rules of the game they are pretending to watch. C of E my arse. I am pleased to say that in England, although religion is a state protected species and an awful lot of people claim they are "Church of England", professing to have actual faith is a bit like admitting to being soft in the head.(unless you're the latest Primeminster- it doesn't lose votes but it may gain a few)

Even bestiality can be conditioned.
Lots of child abusers were abused as children.

You say that Blacks and Gays are what they are but religious people only believe themselves to be religious.
While i agree Black people are what they are (they can not change their skin colour via thought alone) are Gay/Straight people really what they are or do they only believe it.I suspect that being Gay/lesbian/straight is only a matter of faith.
As a human myself with lots of human freinds, my critical observation is anyone who puts themselves in either camp is merely acting on a

It is strange that you should mention a racist bus service and the non racist service that follows.
I am still struggling as an individual with the issues raised here (free choice versus freedom from prejudice)and the no blacks bus service is always the analogy I keep returning to/wrestling with in my own mind.

But I still believe that freedom of opinion is the greatest freedom of all.
After all you would not want an atheist teaching your child would you?

Ms Widdicombe I could not agree more -it is so easy to judge everything by todays standards.
What we must remember is that twenty years ago touching a childs genitals or pulling down their underwear and inserting our penis into their vagina/rectum was considerd a loving faith confirming gesture and should not be viewed

Near the beginning of this thread you dismissed the ridiculing of the laws of the old testament as outdated. Saying that current laws will be outdated and will not be appropriate in the future.
But were n't the Laws of the old testament revealed by an all knowing God. Why did he not just introduce the correct laws to us in the first instance?
if we are so imperfect that we need to be gradually introduced to the true laws why did he make us so.
Perhaps he enjoys playing games no matter who must suffer while he plays them.

Why should n't the Catholic church be able to provide a service to the public which is in line with their own beliefs.
(Although I would agree that it should be privately funded if they do)
As a non believer in God I do not expect religion to impose their views on me and I won't force my views on them.
As a non meat-eater I am often suprised that people don't understand that I don't like buying meat for other people. This strikes me as being a similar imposition on the church.
If they want to live in a fantasy world who are we to stop them.

I hardly know anyone who is religous, and the believers I do know take the bible literally (but they only amount to about 5% fortunately)
But what absolutely baffels me is the fact that a large percentage of the people I know who do not believe in a God if asked their religion still tick C of E (church of England) or Catholic.
They seem to tick this box soley to indicate the fact that they are White and Anglo-Saxon. When you tell them they could have ticked a none or atheist box they are suprised. It is as though they did n't consider this an option eventhough they actually freely admit in private conversation to be non believers (atheist seems to be too strong a term for a lot of people who consider the idea of god laughable).
No wonder the census tells us there are more Jedi Knights in Britain than atheists. (Obviously it would be too presumptuous to assume that the jedi knigts etc are actually atheists)

By trying to introduce other means of describing atheists you are overcomplicating what is a single issue.

You can broaden the definition but by doing so you will lose others who do not adhere to all the other things you believe or don't believe. An atheist is not a club member or someone with a wide range of views in common with fellow atheists. A naturalist is a naturalist, a humanist is a humanist, an atheist is someone who does not belive in God, full stop (period).

Brights sucks because it sounds arrogant.

It is highly embarrasing and sounds like the sort of name a group of pretentious college nerds might call themselves. others will view it dimly.

We are what we ( almost 50 % of the UK) are, atheists.
The only thing we have in common is a lack of belief in superstition-- "We" are not a collective group.

And that chap who does not expect the majority of the population of the U.S to be atheist is in for a shock sooner than he thinks. The U.S.A leads the world in many things but this is one of a few issues where they follow and don't lead.
