Wow, thats some point of view you have there! I mean that in a friendly way I promise I am not going to jump on your back.
I think your arguments do carry a bit of weight here and there, but surely the accumulation of wealth and power is dominated and motivated by excessive religious belief?
You mention the crusades- didn't Pope Urban III (I think it was him, correct me if I am wrong) specifically rally people together under Christianity to go wipe out the Muslims out of the "Holy Land"? Yes, I guess the main intention of some of the supposedly "Christian" lads who went over there did so primarily to kill, rape, pillage and grab land but did so under the impression that they were doing it all in God's name - no matter how perverse their actions. I have heard that people were taken out of prisons and given full pardons if they went out and killed Muslims. The actions of the Vatican and all the nations who joined in were disgusting- of course they were motivated by wealth and land grabbing etc. But surely one of the primary reasons they went over there was to liberate the "Holy" land from people who didn't worship their God?
I think you are right in some ways, people like Bush are after oil etc and the art of warfare is getting to a staggeringly complex level. But think about the reasons why they go to war in the first place. Muslim extremists are only after one thing - convert the world to Islam or kill those who dont want to. How do you do that? I seems to me like Gorilla Warfare- Use your enemies weapons and resources against them, so consider how easy it would be for them to accumulate the right amount of cash to continue their religious war. Educate people, make them doctors, lawyers - high paid professions and then let them lose on a bus or drive a Range Rover into an aiport, fly a plane into a building - its easily done and its not too expensive if you are using the enemies tools.
I almost think Bush is on his own religious crusade - mask it all he likes with noise about "Terror", he is a Christian and he wants to have the dominating religion - I could be hideously wrong here and I dont mind admitting it but all the oil, space programs etc do cost money and do accumulate wealth but consider the one motivational ideology that keeps him going- God, apparently, is telling him to do it.
I dont doubt there is a lot of truth in what you say but I still reckon religion is a great and probably a primary motivator
This is open for discussion of course, just my reading of the situation, , what do you others think, am I barmy? :) (Silly question really hehehhe!)

Ok, I sent this out on the 15th of August, its now the 13th of November and I got a reply at last!
This is in reference to 47. Comment #63590 by Philip1978
I promised to inform you all if anything happened and now I got official Theresa May, House of Commons paper!!
Dear Mr Priestley
Thank you for your email dated the 15th of August about the decision by the West Midlands Police Force to refer Channel 4 to OFCOM in relation to its Dispatches programme "Undercover Mosque". Please accept my apologies for the lengthy delay in replying
I believe the programme illustrated the separatist political ideology preached by extremists in Britain - an ideology which deliberately targets the moderate mainstream Muslim majority, and seeks to convert vulnerable young Muslims in particular to separatism and extremism.
You may be aware that at least some of the separatists shown on the programme were offered the right of reply, and that moderate Muslims, some of whom work in partnership with the Government, were shown on the programme expressing their alarm about the ideology in question.
Paul Goodman MP, Shadow Communities Minister, has said that this decision raises serious questions about media freedom in Britain, and about whether public authorities tasked with upholding the rule of law are now, as a matter of policy, giving special assistance to those who seek to undermine the rule of law, and the pluralist, liberal, democratic culture who both underpins it and guarantees community cohesion.
He is continuing to question the Government, but, on the evidence available, it's hard to avoid the conclusion that this is a politically motivated referral, driven by mistaken belief that the best mean of deal with separatist extremists is to appease them
Once again, thank you for taking the time to write to me
yours sincerely
THE RT HON THERESA MAY MP
I will write to her to thank her, I was not expecting a reply, I think I like most of what she said, esp agreeing that the Government is appeasing extremists rather than applying the law of the land. What does everyone else think?

You write it I will read it! I always enjoy reading your posts, I think you have a very direct and informed viewpoint that does you great credit.
This article is drivel to the point of absurdity, what the hell is this?
"Some may see religion as a tired old superstition, but it does produce our most ethical and caring young adults — believe it or not"
That same tired and arrogant argument of "I believe in God so that makes my caring for people that much better than those amoral naughty atheists, ohh smug me!"
No good can come from thinking like this, only blind stupidity and cruelty to the credulous. Filling people's heads with lies like this is dangerous, once people start relying on the supernatural for moral guidance, the torturous effects of blaming themselves for not adhering to the rules imposed on them is not going to help one bit. You have to care for somebody because you mean it, not imagine it.

D'Souza is not a good debater unless you call shrill frantic ranting using obfuscation as a tool to make him look good in the eyes of the religious. He likes to makes stuff up, like the measuring of the speed of light being wrong and makes it sound like he actually knows what he is talking about. If he actually backed up any of his ridiculous assertions I would have more respect for him as a debater but he just seems to claim his knowledge is correct and expect people to buy his sarcasm and lies.

Whats this?
"Also, contrary to what most people think, there is no reason to believe that consciousness itself is produced by the brain"
Hitchens asked this question to McGrath and I think I might ask you it, what are you doing in a job like yours when you seem to claim this access to such an abundance of knowledge way beyond the scope of us lesser mortals? I find that statement just utterly amazing!
That spits in the face of some of the cleverest brain specialists on this earth, it really does! Do you really have access to some superior knowledge that some of the finest people who have actually done some research on this and are still working on it because they want to be sure and then you come along and say "I got it chaps, its MY God!" No evidence, no research just your bold statement that its true.
Are you really willing to put this to the test? Then I challenge you to write a peer reviewed thesis on your findings and see how far that stands up. I am not wanting to sound rude here but I really find your wild assertions about things, which I don't think you really know about, quite disturbing.
It doesn't help your argument in anyway at all simply asserting that its all to do with my "Naturalist Worldview" and your "Theistic Worldview " being any better, its about backing up your arguments properly. I don't use the highly improbable to argue with, I may wiffle too much and use words like wiffle, but I hope I can base what I say on something more workable and less complex than a God.
But we have been through all this already, its tiring and I need some Tea, good luck with the Thesis!

I think I have had an idea as to why religites get completely huffy about stuff like this, correct me if I am wrong, daft or both!
Religites fear us atheists cos apparently since our moral outlook isnt from a god, so we naturally are out to shoot, rape or go a bit Stalin on a full time basis, cos heck, no morals = no consequences.
So kids see this movie, by some amazing and highly improbable and dramatic turn of events they become atheists due to that naughty Pullman chap. There you have a whole generation of complete amoral criminals taking over the world- taking up smoking and drinking like Hitchens, writing more naughty books like Pullman, justifying killing people cos Sam Harris said so or worst of all TEACH EVOLUTION LIKE DAWKINS!!!
So they desperately fart about like monkey boy in this video or Bill O Reilly in abject fear of kids not growing up to be as stupid and deluded as them!!

My goodness, the Catholic Church is so hypocritical and arrogant to the core plus if that idiot representing them on the Fox news is anything to go by, they are looking scared as well!
I am not going to be so stupid as to say that is completely true after seeing one interview but I hope this trend continues.
I love the way that guy is saying "but they are targeting 11 year olds"! Er hang on matey, don't the Catholic church start proper indoctrination on babies dunking their heads in water and spouting Latin crap?
What is all this fuss about? Its just a book, a bloody good book mind you, have just started reading it, but all in all, as Fanusi Khiyal rightly said, people can enjoy books with religious characters as well as non religious ones. So what if God is attacked in this, dont read it, dont watch it, but don't dare assume that just because the Catholic church doesn't like it means other people can't make their own minds...oh no wait, religion wont allow for that - Freedom of speech as long as God allows it and since God is not around to fight his corner, the Catholic Church can make it all up!

22 years old for crying out loud what is wrong with people? I am so sad for those poor kids, this breaks my heart it really does. What kind of parent wants to die needlessly when the kids need them? What kind of family literally forbids doctors to save lives?
Why do hospitals put up with it? Why can't they simply forbid the family from interfering, offer proper medical advice to the patient and then save them, this dying is so needless. Who cares what their beliefs are, people should not be allowed to die in these circumstances.
Sorry for the rant,

Stop taking things to pieces that shouldn't be, focus on what needs to be attacked, if some feel they could do a better job, go on then, add your arguments to the debate but don't criticise those who are arguing with you in such minute detail! What are you talking about here? The Pope could not be more wrong if he wanted to be.
I do not call forcing rape victims to have the children of their attackers a "sound moral choice", there are not words to describe just how disgusting that suggestion is. You should know how I feel about women being raped, I think I have explained it enough in my posts and I do not take very kindly to the words of this deluded maniac and neither should you.
I do not call allowing the spread of AIDS, cervical cancer and other diseases rational or helpful to this world. I call it ignorance of the highest degree, people are DYING because of this Fides! This man has blood on his hands and people are praising him for it rather than arresting him, all because he is the "Holy Father"

I grew up in High Wycombe, I have seen it become more and more dangerous as time has gone on. 20 years ago nobody, but nobody, would be doing half the things that I see down there now. (Cor, I am sounding old here!)
Wycombe has become a very violent place, especially over the weekends, I still hear now of stabbings and even shootings that I would never have believed possible. What shocked me even more is that I went to school with some of the terrorists arrested, I think that was last year, not sure. That was when they found bomb making equipment in some woods where I used to play as a kid and rounded up a load of men who were planning to do some terrible acts of violence.
I mostly think its is due to gang culture and religion, Wycombe is full of chavs and religious idiots who are constantly making the place where I grew up a nightmare. People get into fights over absolutely nothing and it just a minority of people doing this. It worries me that so much hate is being brewed up, but thinking about it these book findings are of no surprise to me, after what I have seen already books about Jihad, stoning people etc are nothing out of the ordinary.
This is a great pity, High Wycombe is actually quite a lovely place with some amazing people living there, I hope something can be done about it

"What if the woman has been raped? Won't that child be a product of evil instead of love? Won't that child carry that yoke all his life?"
They don't care about rape victims, I have heard of countless stories of women who have been raped and the Catholic Church still insists that abortion and such the like are all wrong. One story that always gets my anger flowing was some poor 14 year old girl out in Ireland was brutally raped, beaten and left for dead but was found and restored back to health. It was only after tests were done that they found out she was pregnant. She had to come over to England to get the procedure done because of the religious idiots who said it was wrong to abort.
I personally think the Vatican be sent to prison for what it has done to this world, it has no right to inflict such psychological barbarism all the name of "holiness". They are essentially condoning rape and yet the world still respects and honours them, its disgusting.

Predictably, the film, opening Dec. 7, already has raised the ire of one outspoken conservative, Catholic League President William Donahue. Earlier this month, he called on Christians to boycott the movie because it will "seduce" parents into buying Pullman's "pro-atheist" book.
I love it when people like Bill get in such a hissy fit over stuff like this, there he is practically having a heart attack over a book, is he really that scared of Philip Pullman? This sort of behaviour is so counter productive, if someone froths and spits about something like this the controversy is bound to cause interest in what is happening. Talk about having your own publicity campaign without having to spend any money!!
Thinking about it, what is Bill saying here, is this book really that persuasive that the entire Catholic church is going to crumble over a film about an atheist book? I secretly would love it if that actually happened but I can't see a mass de-conversion coming any time soon!
Will go see the film though, I might be able to finish the first book before I do, I have just over a month! :)

Apologies all but I am suffering from an over abundance of happiness this morning and I have no idea as to the cause of it, suffice to say I am rather enjoying it nonetheless!

"So, again, the more logical and knowledgeable an atheist is the less one can expect moral behavior from them"
Oh great, so the more I learn and become logical the more I am likely to be a complete bastard, cheers mate!

"Because both the number and size of gaps in the atheistic understanding of reality are growing"
THAT'S HALF THE JOY OF IT ALL YOU SILLY SOD! Mystery is a great part of life, if we knew it all, or even claimed we knew it all, it would be highly dull and boring!
You cannot, should not, just plain forget about saying "Right, there is a gap in your understanding, it absolutely positively MUST then be without a shadow of a scintilla of an iota of doubt be GOD"! Plus not just any God, but Dianelos's because I have yet to find out exactly what his God actually does because his God and the God of the Bible are two completely separate deities!
This whole "you have gaps in your knowledge so it must be my god stuff" has got to stop unless you can prove it matey. So far you haven't convinced anyone of the abilities of your God that cannot be explained by something less complex and easier to understand. I can and will bet my right foot that something less complex and easier to understand than your God is missing in these gaps. If it arrives in our life time you owe me a cup of Tea!
Besides, we all know it was Quetz who did it anyway! :)

746. Most religious people are moderate, and don't hurt anybody
Comment #82279 by Philip1978 on October 26, 2007 at 1:44 am
I have always thought that all the moderates I have ever met are wonderful, jovial and less harmless people but I still think they do provide the platform on which the extremists stand. Without their firm belief in the basics there would never be anything to take that one step further- the basics being firm belief in a God and adherences to the doctrines ordered by that religion. Its like saying "I believe in the God of the Bible, I just ignore the more ferocious parts of it".
What I want to do is stay very clear of generalisations, I hear it all too much about atheists to last a life time
However, I don't think moderate religion is anywhere near as harmless as they are made out to be. I think religion in itself is as BillySands coined the phrase "Mental Torture". Religion to me, I dont care what faith it is, is this belief that if you do what you think a higher power wants you to do in life, rewards will be given. Should you break one of these rules you are then putting the most unnecessary pressure on yourself, you are mentally torturing yourself because you have somehow offended this higher power. Be it the most minor thing, you can still blame yourself for your lack of adherence to the rules of that faith. So then you beg this higher power for forgiveness, worse still you pray to have this God to set things right. Which leads nicely onto prayer...
Prayer is a waste of sodding time, Yes, No, Maybe later is not the most convincing way of KNOWING that your particular God answers prayer. If it doesn't happen you are left thinking, "shit, I have offended Him somehow!" and possibly start inventing reasons why you have offended Him.
If things are going well, yippiee, a nice cosy feeling of well being and arent I a good believer!
All if this is mental delusion and this is the reason I think moderate religion is harmful, thinking that you KNOW what the invisible thinks is just positively nasty in my opinion, the rules are so ambiguous, nothing gets done and you can punish yourself for the most ridiculous of things.
Of course the obvious response to all this is "Oh but that's not how MY God works, noooo, its not like that at all!"
I say it is THEIR God, if they pray, if they believe in an invisible being who is supposed to have an effect on theirs or the whole world's population then there is some reason that they are mentally deluding themselves and possibly psychologically damaging themselves over nothing.
Moderate religion is fantastically harmless and should not be encouraged too much, if they have these basic beliefs then its no wonder some people take it several horrible steps further to the extreme and dangerous levels.
Ok rant over, apologies to all! Must be the fundamentalist atheist mindset I have :)

I completely agree with you there, I pretty much fit your bill there, I went to public school etc
I think what is really being rallied against is what elfinabout has typed, that the Governments are to blame for some of this apathy, giving praise to slobbish behaviour and no encouragement to do better and improve.
To give you an example, the Government wants to charge higher council taxes for those who recycle more and for those who live near decent schools. So by that impression we should all move to ghettos, dont recycle anything and have crap schools because you can get rewarded better for it. If you have a load of kids, commit a few petty crimes then the Government are there to help you find a house and look after your kids as long as you don't get married
Schools are being encouraged to sell their playing fields to build housing - Kids cannot get out and play sport- great idea!
So I am a law abiding chap, I don't do drugs, I pay my taxes, I pay my bills on time, recycle - the works and I could go completely the other way and live life in luxury!
Fackin' ell, wot tha fack, I'll b a gangsta and get me some bitches and bling cos that'll get me respect innit!

Hehehe,
Netscape/Old Testament- Old, cantankerous and full of highly odd teachings that drove people to madness or war
Internet Explorer/New Testament- Same shit with new and improved rules for arsing things up!
Both supposedly inspired by a genius but with suspicious authors who cant agree on things!

Now if you look at cyberspace, either the netscape or Windows Explorer, you can pick and choose sites of the Internet which chime in with that decent moral consensus that we all share about staying awake, and you can say Oh well, this comes from the Internet; this comes from the Internet. But of course you'll find plenty of other bits in the Internet which are simply horrendous by today's standards and force people to fall asleep on a regular basis without the proper raising of attentiveness provided by Tea and Coffee!
