851. Police: Girl Dies After Parents Pray for Healing Instead of Seeking Medical Help

Comment #150511 by irate_atheist on March 27, 2008 at 3:25 am

I guess this is similar to JW's refusing certain life-saving treatments. What is the legal position in that case when the parents refuse treatment for a child?
In Great Britain and Ireland they can be made a ward of court to enable the treatment to be given.
Ref: www.aagbi.org/publications/guidelines/docs/jehovah.pdf

The recommendations section states as item 12:

In a life-threatening emergency in a child unable to give competent consent, all life-saving treatment should be given, irrespective of the parents' wishes.

The underlining is mine.

I think this is a better example how how the popular form of child abuse known as "Sunday school" can turn otherwise smart and decent people into lying idiots.
Or, in my case, a lifelong self-professed militant atheist. Some of their tactics backfire spectacularly. I hardly think they would regard me as their greatest success...

Or, in many cases a death sentence - for someone else. e.g http://www.richarddawkins.net/articleComments,2402,Police-Girl-Dies-After-Parents-Pray-for-Healing-Instead-of-Seeking-Medical-Help,Fox-News,page1

Irate Atheist

not me that determines what is a 'metaphor' - rules of interpretation and context says that.

If the passage is talking about demonic activity and the examples either side are as such then it would not be sensible to suddenly ascribe these as real animals.
Well, fuck my old boots. You should start a new church based on the real truth revealed in the bible. The other 38000 denominations have clearly got it wrong.

What makes you decide what is metaphor and what isn't?

What makes you right and them wrong?

The girl has three siblings, ranging in age from 13 to 16, the police chief said.

"They are still in the home," he said. "There is no reason to remove them. There is no abuse or signs of abuse that we can see."
Who is this man? Mental Mickey?

I won't write down what I'd like to see done to these people, I may get banned from this thread as I understand that death threats are not necessarily tolerated.

We are entering the dangerous world of semantics...perhaps.

I could have more accurately put it thus:

Atheism may lead to a realisation of the danger of religious dogma which includes ignorance, bigotry and intolerance.

It does not 'lead' to anything.

But it can lead away from ignorance, bigotry and intolerance, to name but a few of religion's pernicious traits.

And since the person making the claim has made an extraordinary assertion, it is up to that person to provide the necessary evidence (and extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence--as in overwhelming and indisputable) to prove the truth of that claim. Otherwise, that person is a fraud.
There are other alternatives. I will give an example below:

One person I know, not only claimed that Jesus talked back, that he even told her where to sit on a bus so that she could have a conversation with them. She had also written down conversations - verbatim - she had had with god. Her questions or statements, his responses.

Given that none of this persons other behaviour indicated a dangerous psychotic personaility disorder or schizophrenia, and given that she had be brought up in an absurdly religious background (and due to illness been been bedridden for some considerable time during that period with no one effectively looking after her but these 'conversations'), I could only conclude she was:

1) Deluded

and

2) Disgracefully mislead by family - I know her mother, at least, actively encouraged the above.

and

3) In need of help - professional or otherwise.

So - the individual may believe what they say (so are not technically lying - they know no different inside their own minds) and be deluded due to a number of factors. Religion - of course - being the key element.

Anyway - must dash. Have to go home, hug our baby, cook dinner and then go shopping. Hopefully the wife has got a list ready for me, the odds are she hasn't - as usual. Ah, well, at least Jesus doesn't tell her where to sit on the bus anymore.

The supernatural (whatever that really means - please define what you mean by it) is merely a part of the natural we have not explained. What do you propose we do when we encounter a new phenomenon - run around the room going whoo whoo this is weird, goddidit? You quite clearly have no experience of experimental science or what it involves.
