Comment #143329 by irate_atheist on March 14, 2008 at 2:37 am
Right. I'm in the mood to party.
This man is a self-confessed homophobic ignoramus who should be prosecuted for behaviour liable to cause a breach of the peace.
The bishop is an individual, who if not in the church, could not be trusted to sweep the streets of a provincial market town.
He is a disgrace to the human species and should be held up as an example of the irrational bigotry he and his kind espouse.
He is - to be blunt - one of life's finest fucktards.

Good grief. What a long way to write 'because I believe so.'
In a way I'm glad you're a vicar. You'd be a downright liability in any other profession.
Just to pull apart the premise behind one single paragraph:
The positivists were never so naive as to suggest that GodWhat is 'naive' about regarding the existence of a paticular being as not a scientific hypothesis? On what is this bare-faced assertion made? So, David, why do you not believe in Zeus? Or Thor? Or Allah? Or Baal? Or Ganesha? Or any other made up god that you don't happen to believe in? A god made of nothing, having no discernable effect or evidence of existence? And you base your life on this and try to get others to base their lives on it too? Another deity plucked from the ether? Get a grip man, if you possibly can. Which, from the evidence we have seen here, I very much doubt.
could be a scientific hypothesis - they declared the concept of God to be
meaningless precisely because it was not a scientific hypothesis. Dawkins
on the other hand, holds that the presence of absence of a creative
superintelligence is unequivocally a scientific question'. This is the kind
of comment of which we say it is not even wrong!'

Ignore the whole flea/not flea issue just for a post or two and let's get to the nub of the issue.
David. You, effectively, claim you have a book that is inspired by or written about the supreme creator of, and interferer in, the entire universe. You do your best to - and are paid to - convince others that this is true in fact. Not in some allegorical or metaphorical way. You will say - but some stories are metaphors/allegories etc. - but you have to have a basis to assert this on.
The burden of proof in the original matter rests (rather heavily, I would say) on you.
Saying that 'I needed £80 and not long after a couple of people gave me a total of £80' is not sufficient evidence. Please note the other times that your church was not necessarily desperate for cash and you received a donation. Or the times when you really needed the cash to buy a new bible or two but didn't have enough in the kitty - but you got no special donations for a while.
Saying that 'I think of Jesus, he loves me, so I feel good, so this creator exists' is not sufficient evidence. It is wilful self-delusion and wish fulfilment. Others think of Allah and feel just at peace. Then they blow themselves up or fly planes into buildings. Hardly a recommendation for going by what one 'feels'.
Saying that this passage or that is 'misinterpreted' or 'taken out of context' does not shore up your position. You claim, in effect, the book is about (and inspired by?) this ultimate creator, one would expect - at the very least - a degree of clarity and consistency that is not apparent in the book.
If the book is correct, it was correct then and would therefore be correct now. Such comments that have been made by theists that 'us atheists' will only accept evidence that can be 'reproduced on a lab bench' is hogwash. An example would for me be to write that Winston Churchill drank excessively. If I write it down now it's true. If I wrote it down 40 years ago it would still be true. If I write it down tomorrow it will still be true. We have reliable sources for this information. We have reliable sources that the subject and the source for the information about the subject actually existed. It is not a 'metaphor' or 'open to interpretation' because it is a fact. Not demonstrable on a lab bench, but a fact nonetheless.
With reference to the above, contradictory heresay, third hand writings or biased proselytising material is not sufficient evidence - no matter when it was written. Especially when there is insufficient evidence as to who even put quill to parchment in the first case.
If you went to a court of law and presented a prosecution case based on 'evidence' such as theists - incuding yourself - have produced for the existence of a god or gods, the case would be thrown out of court, most probably along with the prosecuting barrister...
So.
I ask you.
Plainly and simply.
In words that cannot be misinterpreted.
Or even in a phrase 'taken out of context'.

I am not sure what the right balance is, but I would rather err on the side of keeping religion away from science. And no pandering to the NOMA crap the 'sophisticated' believers spout either. I am strongly of the opinion that science should stamp on the toes of religion. Religion makes claims, science demonstrates beyond all reasonable doubt that these claims are false. I would guess this is your position also?

I'm feeling very concerned about my heretical thoughts and behaviour re preferring coffee to tea (and, indeed, not even liking tea). Quetzalcoatl - is there any penance I should be doing?Don't fret. Long discussions have been held on this subject, and apparently Quetz is pleased by either hot beverage. Some of us go even further and suggest that Bovril is also acceptable, but this has lead to a schism into the pre and post- reformation sects. However, I don't myself believe his tolerance extends to hot drinks that should be cold (e.g. orange squash) and will vigorously oppose those who suggest otherwise.

If we are sticking fingers in the air, my view would be that it is a good education that leads to atheism rather than just intelligence.Quite possibly so. My dearly beloved - who could have given wooter a run for his money on a bad day - is now fascinated by such programs as the recent two-parter by Prof. Hawking and even RD's 'Enemies of Reason' series. The more she learns, she less she is fooled by. But the individual has to want to learn and a lot of it comes down to trusting the source of the information. If your entire family and most friends have fed you a diet of ignorance, when someone else challenges that ignorance you won't trust them and will completely disbelieve what they say.

We cannot put ourselves into the position of questioning since we are all blesses. We would no be existed but we are. We are so much grateful to God. If some kids are born with sicknesses, this is the test for their parent that they can pass by patience and prayers. Sicknesses are the times as we have to pray. This is a kind of the same question why do you give him more money? And it is the same question that we ask in our junior college, why do we have a test? Can I skip the test and get the diploma without having a test?
The parents who lose their kids at very early age will be rewarded in paradise to be together with their kids forever.
