Spaghetti monster, As promised you are back, your line of argument does not seem to have changed even though the subject has.Anyway, you say isnt everyone free to think as they choose and you cannot control what people think,I beg to differ, If you indoctrinate from an early age and inhibit or stop access to contrary knowledge then you are controlling anothers thoughts.Thats self evident! I do not like the word pseudo in the context you have used it,but as you have, do you consider yourself a pseudo intellectual? It seems to me that through various devices you are also attempting to convert others to your world view, or is it just constructive criticism from a higher plane. You also say common good, mutual respect and compassion for the living do not exist in reality, you may be right, but dont you think its its incumbent on humanity to attempt to create such a reality for themselves? To my mind accepting our lot is in itself both lazy and irrational. As for being intellectually honest you ought to reflect on your own before asking the question of others.

Weefree, something of an aside and a question. The good christians of the westboro baptist church have pledged to picket the funerals of those murdered at Virginia Tech and the website states :- "The lord YOUR god sent a crazed madman to shoot your children, and he didnt miss." Its obviously not my god, is it yours and will you be going?

Weefree, re the attacks on churches in Norway, there IS a difference between satanism and atheism even though in your mind there may not be.

weefree, gang murders are about territory or pecuniary advantage, rape about sexual dominance, the thugs of Mao and Stalin for communism. Many of the people who commit/committed these outrages are atheist, but with the odd exception non of this done for atheism. As for the religious claiming they are killing in the name of god thats not right they ARE killing for THEIR god.

Isik hello, I do not see the fact christian proselytizers were murdered by islamic extremists after reported tension between the relgious communities as a coincidence, you have to realise that most people would not. weefree, I think you will find that most people on this forum "thinkingly" lump all religions together,it sounds like you are a member of one that has the answer, please tell.

The catholic church has lost some of its influence due to the child abuse scandals especially with the young, people are also wealthier and better informed. The invasive influence that the priesthood had over the lives of individuals is on the wane but as with the faith schools in Wales its irrational beliefs will still be promulgated. The signs are good.

bouwe, would you explain what you meant by saying "we should take them" refering to the gallagher brothers, who is the "we" in this? I find it incredulous that this sort of patronising intellectual snobbery has been used in the first 4 comments on this page. These people are atheists wether you like their reasoning or not, thats if you have access to thier reasoning, do you? if so please enlighten me. This sort of comment creates the in group out group mentality of the theists and in my view will alienate many people from the movement. I for one think that a disparate movement is the stronger one.

Hi everybody, this subject is something of a personal bugbear, about 20 years ago I was introduced to a "new age" community and have had many dicussions on this topic. One of these people was diagnosed about 5 years ago with cancer of the cervix. She refused medical help (I almost said conventional) and instead consulted a "colour" healer from Liverpool approx 120 miles from where she lived. Her weekly treatment consisted of a telephone call to the healer who would inform her of the colour of the healing energy he was transmitting telepathically. She the subject was to lie on the floor with a minimum of four people around that cared, who would imagine the same healing colour flowing into her. She asked me to join the group I refused not wanting to condone the practise. As her situation got worse her treatment was upped to twice a week. She died 2 years ago never considering that she had made the wrong choise. A gentle ill educated gullible woman.I agree with denoir that the mechanism of the belief is the same for the religious. The only way this nonsense can be combated is through the education system by teaching skeptism and critical thinking. As for the frog walking on water its only a short hop to believing a man can do it aswell, maybe just after a lightening strike.

Pentecost, thanks for the reply, A dilemma for any american rationalist ,i suspect. ScienceBreath, with regards to the quote you have just used. Spaghetti Monsters statement is pretty clever(Sarc), it reminds me of what Dennis Thatcher the spouse of the ex Prime Minister once said... "Its better to keep your mouth shut and let people think you are a fool rather than open it and confirm the fact."

Spaghetti Monster , It seems to be yourself thats the posturer, you say you live within the confines of your own apathy and indifference, this is obviously after the rather painful times you`ve had putting serious thought into your beliefs. Yaaawn. dimity dim dim dim.

Lord Asriel, The job does not imply infallibility, the pope is the vicar of christ on earth (wash my mouth out with soapy water) and as such is infallible in any decision on the flocks beliefs. He believes that, those surrounding him believe that and I imagine most of the roman catholics in the world believe that. His decisions effect millions of lives ,to the detriment of many.I agree with Ian.

Stewart: True , but people did object to the situation and risked all for it, many going to the "camps". The anti nazi stance of the father is hearsay , he retired from the police in 1937 at the age of 60 (to keep his pension) there is no record of any such activity. Where is the moral fortitude in that? I suspect ratty was too much of a woose to enjoy the youth movement, not that he had any moral objections, Hitler said he was carrying on the traditions of the catholic church with regard to the jews, they were jew haters do you think ratty would have thought differently ? gods rottwieler.

MartinSGill, Very unpleasant, you will find that the Hitler youth was in no way equivalent to the British Boy Scouts. In 1936 Their military athletics included bayonet drill, grenade throwing and pistol shooting. It also supported and promoted Nazi ideology. on the other hand the BBS when formed was a christian organisation which amongst other things was there to "promote the cause of peace". You will find that it was the Boys Brigade that had military drilling with dummy rifles. Hitler did not abuse it he was one of the instigators . You say in the view of german children at the time they were equivalent , what did they know of the BBS?

To reclaim reason we have lost, we have to go back 6000 years to just before Eve took the bite from the apple. ( a joke ). I think the track record of the catholic church on reason or even reasonableness does not stand up to scrutiny ,as for dimensions of reason .... start the eerie music. Absolute bloody nonsense
