"first-class nuts."
That's rich coming from a guy who believes in "rapture"!
52. Memo: Stop teaching evolution
Comment #22770 by DavidMcC on February 22, 2007 at 6:04 am
GBG, I think you misunderstand the cause of the embarrassment. It wasn't the idea of evolution, only the "in your face" manner of putting it forward that was embarrassing Michael Ruse.
54. The God Delusion
Comment #22141 by DavidMcC on February 13, 2007 at 3:31 am
FortunaAdiuvatForte: "Well I have heard many atheists on this forum say the purpose of mankind is to propagate- therefore should they not agree with this concept?"
That remark absolutely epitomises the religious attitude to evolutionary theory - that we should blindly follow where it seems to lead. To a scientist, the discovery that evolution was the result of genes maximising their numbers is simply a result, not a pseudo-religious moral principle!
55. Richard Dawkins interview with Paula Zahn
Comment #22138 by DavidMcC on February 13, 2007 at 2:59 am
Stewart, maybe Paula didn't answer Richard's question about Thor, etc because Paula wasn't the one being interviewed. I think it is common practice by interviewers not to allow the interviewee to "turn the table" on them, but rather to allow them to use a question of that nature to make a point to the audience. After all, that, rather than Paula's views on Thor, is the purpose of the interview.

Well done, not only RD, but even CNN! It may have been short, but what did the other US news channels do? (Presumably nothing.)
57. The questions science cannot answer
Comment #21605 by DavidMcC on February 10, 2007 at 5:16 am
"Richard Dawkins, England's grumpiest atheist..."
Wouldn't you be grumpy if you found your job as a science populariser was being attacked by religious (or any other) bigots? It's RD's job as the Simonyi Professor at Oxford U. to minimise the damage done by people with an anti-science agenda.
58. Does Richard Dawkins exist?
Comment #21443 by DavidMcC on February 9, 2007 at 7:42 am
GBG:"You say, 'Anderson is a young earth creationist with an axe to grind'.
This is patently absurd though its a good illustation of what Dr Tommyrot was talking about above. Whats your point here? Richard Dawkins is an 'old earth evolutionist' with an axe to grind (ie atheism) but you seem to be unable to apply such criticims to yourself. Wake up and smell the coffee."
Are you trying to impose a (false) sense of symmetry, to encourage the (incorrect) notion that Dr T and Pro. D are proponenets of rival scientific ideas, GBG?
59. Ancient boy's skeleton sparks evolution debate

So you've gone from one extreme to the other, then DavidJMH?
60. Does Richard Dawkins exist?
Comment #21384 by DavidMcC on February 9, 2007 at 1:51 am
Are you sure it wasn't Richard Dawkins pretending to be Terry Tommyrot pretending to be Richard Dawkins, just for a joke? After all, the voice would come naturally.
61. Do stop behaving as if you are God, Professor Dawkins
Comment #20962 by DavidMcC on February 7, 2007 at 6:03 am
"I gave up one belief, atheism, and embraced another, Christianity. Why? There were many factors. For a start, I was alarmed by some atheist writings, which seemed more preoccupied with rubbishing religion than seeking the truth."
Well, the duck shoot is always a favourite at the fair, isn't it? You shouldn't blame its customers.
62. Young, British Muslims 'getting more radical'
Comment #19648 by DavidMcC on January 29, 2007 at 4:48 am
CodeCrack, while I wouldn't have been as blunt as David James, I am inclined to agree with him, that even attempting to carry out a mass deportation is a VERY bad idea, which doesn't solve the real problems. In this case, the real problem is Britain's military support to GW Bush in the ME, not ethnic minorities who happen to be muslim, and some of whom are incensed by what is going on there.

Bad idea, queen. We might get called "Right b*****s", etc.
64. Evangelical Scientists Refute Gravity With New 'Intelligent Falling' Theory
Comment #18034 by DavidMcC on January 18, 2007 at 3:22 am
David Robertson, I was of course referring to the re-Discovery site fooling me into thinking it was a real fundie site. The "intelligent falling" joke wouldn't fool a wombat.

Here's another clever spoof site. Had me fooled, but a few key sentences give it away. (Well, OK, and the picture, if you think about it!)

66. Do galaxies follow Darwinian evolution?
Comment #15729 by DavidMcC on January 2, 2007 at 10:08 am
Although the biology analogy fails for galaxies, mainly because they don't have generations, it comes closer with stars within a galaxy, because stars are born and die, then much of their material gets recycled and mixed to form new stars. The material for each generation gets more "metal-rich" due to nuclear burning in the previous stars, but "new" hydrogen is involved as well. Not quite like sex, but vaguely similar. Selection is by size, because most stars are red dwarfs, because they last so long.

Don't forget, Urbi Cica, that Jerry Falwell's Liberty University is trying to get accreditation to offer "science" degrees.
