51. Anti-Quran Film Fitna Pulled From Web Due to 'Threats'

That's true. You can also choose to pay the jizya, or let them kill you.

Thats not true either. Just more emotive fluff. There are real problems, real challenges why must you exaggerate?

You are not equal. You are referred to as a Kuffar in Arabic. A dergoatory term, thrown about quite loosely, on par with the Hebrew goyim, equally pejorative. There is no hope for equality with these people.

Surely you don't think any of this is news?

Again so what? Any lunatic can make any claim or observation they choose. I'm not compelled to believe their delusions, and neither are you.

I think it will be more clear the next time a toddler is splattered on a wall in the underground from a suicide bomb. I hope not, but it seems it will take a seminal event to drive the point home.

Why would this make a difference? Because it would be one of "our" toddlers? Such emotive, and content free statements really don't help.

I've enjoyed your posts Steve. Fight the good fight:-)

I found Fitna to be fairly factual, in terms of what the Koran says, and what some muslims say about the west. So what? People can say any damn thing they like, if the obviously lack the capacity to follow through how can it be a threat?

Seriously, upward of 100,000 people are dead in Iraq, and we've had how many terrorist attacks on EU soil? Is it as many as 10 since 2003?

Those that want us to deport people for thought crimes and declare war on "Islam", are just not thinking terribly clearly at all. They have allowed their judgement to be clouded by an irrational and nebulous fear. Some of them of course are simply disingenous types, feeding on, and amplifying the fear of others, but most are just me plus panic.

Every time some teacher nearly gets beheaded for encouraging the naming of teddy bears, or some gutless bastard in SA kills his own daughter to protect the family "honour" we get the same hind brain reaction from the usual suspects. The Muslim Borg are on the march!!!

I've done a few YT's on this subject, and they are as valid now as they were then. I hope they help to calm people down.

Here is an example of something very similar, but "lampooning" Christianity. It's been around for a while, and predates my eventual apostasy. When I saw it, I considered it a very clever, but gentle critique of christian hypocrisy. Have a look.

Perhaps the elements in the Dawkins Rap that strike the more erm ... orthodox ... as offensive, are of a similar tone to what would offend a hard core christian in this video.

Comment #152262 by briancoughlanworldcitizen on March 30, 2008 at 2:50 pm

but are some posters really wanting a theological argument about whether Hamlet was really going to kill the king in the chapel?

But of course! We must take a position before all the evidence is in, and stick to it rigidly regardless. What could be more reasonable?

I know what I believe, and when the Creator of this vid is revealed, I his humble prophet (PBUM) will be rewarded for my righteous and holey interpretation of his message.

While, you ... you infidel scum, you UNBELIEVERS, will receive the fate reserved for those that do not understand the words of the Mighty Rapster ...

Rrrrrrap of aaaages bop for me,
Let me hippty' hop in theeeeee !!!

As for YOU Zara, the eternal and enduring Rapster mocks your scorn (rolling eyes wildy) and, has a special fate ordained for YOU. Where the rapping endureth for ever, grammar is a dead memory and English unrecognisable. Ohhh yess (foaming) oooh yessss. Muhaaaaaaaaaa

I disagree on point one. It is heart stoppingly hilarious. I was offended, at first, but kept watching because of the fun.

Dawkins rapping was cool, but a pimped out Dennett was ueber cool and only an insider could come up with that.

Point two is obviously an issue, but I think the under 25 audience will have a completely different reaction to ours.

I totally reject the point 3, this is pure genius and the reason it has taken 50,000 YT hits in a day.

For 4, well, since we are still speculating about it's purpose, we can hardly judge if it has failed, can we? Maybe it's just provocative fluff carefully calibrated to confuse, enrage and lampoon both sides of the debate. In that case a resounding success I think:-) We'll just have to wait and see.

Comment #152230 by briancoughlanworldcitizen on March 30, 2008 at 1:50 pm

Oh Donald, Donald. Here is my take on the evidence you've presented.

o) Opening image "Ministry of Science Propaganda" with wartime newsreel sound
But what about the sub text? Look at it again. The sub text is pure "us", not "them":-)

o) "Dick" instead of "Richard" (associating Richard with .. well .. you know .. )
Slang, and it's rapping. Being or having an enormous .... well suffice to say it's considered a positive attribute.

o) Science as a sinister machine viciously expelling anyone who questions evolution
this is a parody of what "they" think, not what "we" think, and since 90% of the vid whistles over the heads of the creo audience, what on earth would be the point?

o) The scientist who questions natural selection speaks in a reasonable voice, and merely expresses an opinion. The "orthodox" scientist who calls for his expulsion is sinister and uses the codename "middle tool".
Overt, over the top sinister .... surely some subtly would be in evidence? Twirling mustachios? Sinister side glances? Come along.

o) The rap mocks RD's qualifications
No. It merely states what any sensible person actually thinks.

o) The video portrays RD (and the other atheists) as arrogant and condescending ("your concern is noted --- and stupid")
Well maybe, this was a little over the top, but it may be a device to convince the religious audience that this is for them

o) The money and dollar signs suggesting that atheists make money from their views
Don't they, and isn't this something to celebrate? Charlatans like Benny Hinn, and Rheinhard Bonke have made millions telling lies about healings, miracles and the like. Dawkins and Co. at least represent their honestly held views.

60. Beware the Believers

Comment #152224 by briancoughlanworldcitizen on March 30, 2008 at 1:24 pm

Moustached Scientist (HITLER/STALIN REFERENCE): Big deal natural selection creates that sort of thing everyday.

This is just reaching ....

The twirling mustachio is the staple of over the top villians since (at least) the days of silent film. It has (almost certainly) nothing to do with Hitler or Stalin.

I take this as evidence that this is NOT an expelled production, rather than the opposite. It's a subtle parody of the grotesque misrepresentation of science and scientists that is the very bread and butter of the expelled crowd.

Here are the full lyrics, if you haven't seen them. I have bolded some choice bits.

My name is D to the I to C to the K, Yeah I'm the Dickie D,
I gots my PhD and comin' your way on the Youtube to bust your world view so just listen to me and don't you argue.

You see, this battle's been ragin' since Zeus was on the bottle,'tween Science like Democritus and Faith like Aristotle,
who said the mover was unmovin' like some magic trick but
that's no good logic, my posse is far too quick for this
religious sthick.

Cos science is the only way to know y'all, you stand with me y'all, or you can fall y'all

So go ahead and take your pick...

ES: Yeah you tell him Rick ...
Darwin : Cos if you don't know me ...

RD: YOU DON'T KNOW DICK!!

Chorus : Yeah he's the Dick to the Dawk to the PhD,
he's smarter than you he's got a science degree!
Yeah he's the Dick to the Dawk to the PhD,
he's smarter than you he's got a science degree!

SH:On the shoulders of midgets we built up this machine,
DD:YEAH!!!

RD: Science silenced that watchdog wingnut Paley
growing stronger and harder almost daily, storming Wilber by force as we framed the discourse that faith and science are split in schismatic divorce.

Then Darwin took to the seas to see what no one had seen, and ever since then we've been increasingly keen, they may never adore us, but they'll no longer ignore us,

give it to 'em PZ hit these BLEEP with the chorus!!!

Chorus : Yeah he's the Dick to the Dawk to the PhD,
he's smarter than you he's got a science degree!
The Dick to the Dawk to the PhD,
he's still smarter than you he studied biology!

Then there was Darrow dukin' it out with the straight and the narrow,
a ragin' bull in the ring, he did his thing, and took it on the chin like he was Bobby De Niro.

We might have lost at Scopes, beaten down by the dopes, and the stooges of popes, but in losin' we coped, becomin' more than we hoped, creationists slipped on the soap of their own slippery slope.

What was impossible, improbable, is now wholly unstoppable untoppleable, the Dick Doc'll roll up as you creationists foldup

you haters talkin' bull,
don't you know that this Dick is un-cock-frickin' blockable ...

Chorus : Yeah he's the Dick to the Dawk to the PhD,
he's smarter than you he's got a science degree!
The Dick to the Dawk to the PhD,
he's still smarter than you he studied biology!

Now the machine of our making, sees culture ripe for the taking,

Cos I'm the rappinest, rabidest atheist who unlike the Catholic, Muslim or even the Jew, believes that no God but science could ever be true, hell if I was dyslexic I'd even hate "dog" too.

Time to open your eyes, get yourself wise, the age of science will rise to be religion's demise,

and while you churchies all cry, shouting 'why God oh why,' I'll still be poppin' my collar earning more dollars than Allah.

Hollah!

Chorus : Yeah he's the Dick to the Dawk to the PhD,
he's smarter than you he's got a science degree!
The Dick to the Dawk to the PhD,
he's still smarter than you he studied biology!

Chorus : Yeah he's the Dick to the Dawk to the PhD,
he's smarter than you he's got a science degree!
The Dick to the Dawk to the PhD,
he's still smarter than you he studied biology!

These references strike me as fairly indicative of a pro science stance. There is hardly a syllable, you could reasonably disagree with. Don't be misled or disoriented by the "rapping" demeanour of Dawkins and his "posse", all rappers are over the top arrogant pricks.

Some may have pointed this out already but this is promotion for expelled. The "machine" is the machine that expels scientists who question Darwinian natural selection.

As an early vector of the infection, I feel bound to comment ... again.

Yes, this is the superficial initial impression from about the first 60 seconds. What then? Why does the Dawkins avatar point out the long history of the machine? How he is not responsible for its existence? Why is the "expelled" stamp not the actual logo of the movie, rather than simply something similar?

Why do the lyrics chronicle the history of the conflict between reason and faith, with reason as the plucky underdog, gaining in strength?

Who but the atheist community would recognise the main protagonists, and isn't this exactly why most of the physical fun would be simply lost on a creationist audience?

This is a multi layered parody (obviously given the confusion and verbiage generated), and the first impression, made in the first 60 seconds, is most assuredly not the whole story.

What a staggering level of discussion this has generated!! I go on record as being very certain that this clever little vid is firmly on the side of pro-science. I shall be suitably embarrased, shocked and ruefully conscious (once again) of how easily I am enthused, if proven wrong:-)

Comment #151710 by briancoughlanworldcitizen on March 29, 2008 at 8:39 am

I don't know. I think the image of the machine is ominous, sinister and foreboding and it has a money sign hanging on it. It tramples everything ruthlessly under its feet, flatten everything wherever it goes.

Well yes. That is part of the satire. It's subtle, much too subtle for the creationist audience. Have you ever seen anything from that quarter that rises much above simply storming screaming at the ramparts waving a sword? To be satire on us, this would have to be several layers beyond mere multi.

My reaction to the first 90 seconds, the first time I saw it was negative .... but that is it's genius I think. Creationists will think this is lampooning science and then be left floundering and confused. I started off confused, but the lyrics leave one in little doubt at the close that this is primarily pro science. I think the rap medium disorients those not at least a little familiar with it, me for example. Watch it 5 times in a row:-)

I am DYING to find out who actually came up with this, and what (if any) agenda they had. You'll grant this episode is pretty interesting at least?

Comment #151618 by briancoughlanworldcitizen on March 29, 2008 at 4:20 am

I must be getting old. Even reading the transcript didn't help. Perhaps wooter could translate?

Wot!!?

There are all sorts of clever references to pivotal points in the reason vs faith wars.

The discussion about worldview among Greek philosophers.
Willam Palleys "Divine Watchmaker".
Darwins journey to the Gallapagos.
Huxley kicking Bishop Wilberforces ass.
The Scopes trial.
The unstoppable rise of science and reason, most recently personified by Dawkins "posse" PZ, Harris, Hitchens, Dennett and Eugenie Scott.

It's parody sure, but the overall message seems to be pro science. The heaviest exaggeration is for the business with scientists being expelled. The "machine" is real, it is the scientific method which has become as inexorable as evolution itself. If you spout bullshit, you WILL eventually be expelled, because your more grounded and sensible peers will no longer see you as a valuable or useful collaborator. However, if thats a conspiracy so is basic human nature.

She spent almost a year living with this nightly fear - before a neighbour pointed out that the spare bedroom housed the hot water tank, and the banging was just the pipes cooling down after the heating had gone off!

Here is a really good one. This winter, we began to hear what sounded like footsteps on the front steps. We assumed some natural explanation, but were at a complete loss to explain what was causing it, and it was downright eerie, especially at night.

Eventually I traced it to a small cloth floor mat we had left hanging over the edge of the wooden sorround enclosing the stairs leading up to the house, get this : at some point it had gotten wet, subsequently frozen solid (it was december so minus degrees) and was occasionaly knocking against the wooden frame in the wind. I must have looked around the stoop 10 times and seen that blasted mat every single time. Only when I grabbed the bastard, and realised it was as solid as a piece of wood did I realise. Mystery solved.

As I have posted on a forum thread.... how about trying to set up a main site topic where you can report on new blogs/sites you are talking on, and so on? Would allow us to keep track of things more easily, perhaps...

Not convinced it would be as visible, the thread is likely to just wind down if we don't get a critical mass of regular contributors. There are a LOT of dead threads in those forums.

I'll ping Josh a mail and see what he thinks.

... which one of those six theist links is most in need of a reality check at the moment? I have an hour to kill but no time to review them all.

Whatever is currently at the end of the thread, thats Neil and that Muslim site.
