51. Mormons urged to back ban on same-sex marriage

Comment #201342 by BillySands on June 29, 2008 at 3:31 pm

Nope. 'Tangents' are common in Josephus as well as other ancient historians.

Care to give examples and demonstrate why they are not additions?

Antiquities 18:3

2. But Pilate undertook to bring a current of water to Jerusalem, and did it with the sacred money, and derived the origin of the stream from the distance of two hundred furlongs. However, the Jews (8) were not pleased with what had been done about this water; and many ten thousands of the people got together, and made a clamor against him, and insisted that he should leave off that design. Some of them also used reproaches, and abused the man, as crowds of such people usually do. So he habited a great number of his soldiers in their habit, who carried daggers under their garments, and sent them to a place where they might surround them. So he bid the Jews himself go away; but they boldly casting reproaches upon him, he gave the soldiers that signal which had been beforehand agreed on; who laid upon them much greater blows than Pilate had commanded them, and equally punished those that were tumultuous, and those that were not; nor did they spare them in the least: and since the people were unarmed, and were caught by men prepared for what they were about, there were a great number of them slain by this means, and others of them ran away wounded. And thus an end was put to this sedition.

3. Now there was about this time Jesus, a wise man, if it be lawful to call him a man; for he was a doer of wonderful works, a teacher of such men as receive the truth with pleasure. He drew over to him both many of the Jews and many of the Gentiles. He was [the] Christ. And when Pilate, at the suggestion of the principal men amongst us, had condemned him to the cross, (9) those that loved him at the first did not forsake him; for he appeared to them alive again the third day; (10) as the divine prophets had foretold these and ten thousand other wonderful things concerning him. And the tribe of Christians, so named from him, are not extinct at this day.

4. About the same time also another sad calamity put the Jews into disorder, and certain shameful practices happened about the temple of Isis that was at Rome. I will now first take notice of the wicked attempt about the temple of Isis, and will then give an account of the Jewish affairs.

2 and 4 fit together a lot better with out 3

If we adopted that naive approach, then we would know next to nothing about the ancient world.

I think we know that for a devout jew to call a man the christ would be considered blasphemous - the crime jesus was allegedly killed for

Tacitus only mentions the existence of Christians and says where they got their name from. It does not corroborate the cannonical .

As pointed out, Josephus (writing after 90 CE) can not be trusted.
The arabic version is also widely believed to be a rough paraphrasing of Josephus derived from christian sources.
It says nothing of jesus as a miracle performed either. It just reports what his followers believed.

If you also read the passage in context, it seems to disrupt the flow of passages on either side of it.

If someone would alter a historical text, it makes you wonder what they did to the NT (which is full of shoe horned "prophecies")

SG,

Does that mean that DR wont take up my suggestion and amalgamate with the catholics, thereby reducing bills. Shame, they could have sold all those spare buildings and helped the poor - then, I'm only an immoral atheist that doesn't understand the petty quarrels of people with make believe friends

Hi Epeeist,

I'm not aware of specifics other than those that SG has pointed out. However, when is there not trouble amongst believers?

Have you keeping up with the GAFCON business? Let's watch them hang themselves.

On a more amusing note, I saw this today http://www.sundaymail.co.uk/news/scottish-news/2008/06/29/exclusive-love-cheat-priest-joseph-creegan-sues-church-for-unfair-dismissal-78057-20625260/

A priest is going to sue the church for being sacked. He wants a tribunal, but the church are going to argue that he was employed by god and not by them. Wonder how they will get god to appear?

57. Richard Dawkins on Doctor Who

Comment #201103 by BillySands on June 29, 2008 at 3:26 am

Was nice to see Richard on Dr Who last night. I wonder if David Robertson has asked for his autograph yet.

I wonder why they have not made DR a villan on the series. Perhaps his inanity and desire to lead and assimilate everyone into his evil cult is too OTT and unbelievable for a programe that made a vilan out of liquorice allsorts.

58. A secular world is a sane world

Comment #200762 by BillySands on June 28, 2008 at 8:02 am

Having read all the comments now, it never fails to amuse me what a laughing stock Robertson is. The only downer is that he is not the only religiously induced ignoramous in the world.

Its probably another (s)hit and run by him, but he recently said that christians dont believe in indoctrination. How does he explain proverbs 22:6 "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
"

I wonder if Wee free sunday fundy school discusses whether jesus is the son of god, and whether that god actually exists. Or do they make them sing "yes jesus loves me because the bible tells me so" over and over and over again?

But, he doesnt believe it. He's a "pick n mix" man.

Would that not make his word totally worthless then - shockeroonie!

Come on David, we want to hear about the fall - it is something that could be tested and provide that elusive evidence of yours. Surely a genuine truth seeker would not be a lilly livered chicken about the issue.
What if we go to hell because you pushed us away from god - I dont think he would be too happy with you now.

It appears that Robertson is unable to grasp the fact that if we are evolved, this requires death and suffering. So to spell it out to him DEAD THINGS FOUND IN ROCKS OLDER THAN PEOPLE MEAN YOU ARE WRONG!

Did anyone see QI last night. I loved the bit where Steven Fry asked Alan Davis if he had read genesis. He replied that he hadn't. Steven fry then said "You should, it's absolutely hilarious"

Comment #200264 by BillySands on June 27, 2008 at 7:56 am

I don't know enough about it but I do not see why it would make one difference to my faith.

WTF?????

How then can you possibly know that? It does make a difference to you because you believe in a literal fall that brought suffering to the world.

So, which are you going to give up? The fall or evolution? What will be your selection criteria? (The bible no doubt)

61. Stop distorting young minds!

Comment #200222 by BillySands on June 27, 2008 at 5:34 am

Perhaps we should be considering action against 'Clearthinker' under the Trades Description Act - content obviously not conforming to description.

If he was advertising anything else, he would be in trouble.

who says? Given that the number of atheists is a minority of the population why should my tax go to pay for the indoctrination of children into secularism?

So, if for example a large group of christians were to say agree with an Austrian christian who hated jews for example (as many a good christian has), that would make it ok in your book then? 80 million Germans cant be wrong (especially the christians) eh?

Atheists actually make up over a 3rd of your country. The majority religion is the curch of scotland followed by the catholics (and your lot swear their leader is the antichrist) So you are actually in the minority. How many (not including sheep wearing wellie boots - as opposed to the 2 legged ones) does your particular church have?

You could amalgamate with the local catholics and that would be one less building I have to pay the water charges for - idiot!

PS the fall (coward!)

Even by Graylings and Dawkins standards this is a new low. So the C of E and the Baptists are into cannibalism and sexual perversion, believe in aliens coming to earth and always threaten torture?

Hey David, did you hear that Christian Robert Mugabe give the true christian position on gays last night? (oops, I forgot, you are a homophobe too) - Keep up the good work"!

I wonder if David would object to arguments against god being complsory parts of RE in schools - given his unbalanced world view and hatred of anyone that challenges him (and the fact he was not for giving islam an equal crack), I can guess the answer - well, he is a fundamentalist after all.

Care to comment on your idea about sin and natural disasters?

What's that? You dont because it would prove your ignorance beyond a shaddow of a doubt and show us how little regard you actually have for humanity - and you would rather carry on sniffing toilet seats instead?

You can now play the fake outrage card and pretend you have an answer but it is not worth giving us now - boo hooo!

To All

What do all atheists scream in the time of danger? Oh God please help me.

Why is this?

Really? I dont remember that when I was facing death or serious injury in a desperate winter climbing situation.

My partner asked if I was considering praying. My reply was "Am I bollocks!"

Then, you should read what Joe Simpson had to say. He broke his leg at over 20 000 feet and the recieved wisdom at that time was anyone that happened to was a dead man crawling. His partner did his best to get him down, but he ended up dangling over a crevasse and his partner cut the rope. He was left for dead but eventually he got himself back after several days.

This is what he had to say

"At 16, I asked all these monks some serious questions and they didn't come up with the answers, and I just decided I didn't believe in God. And I always thought, you know, if everything hit the fan, then I might turn around and say, you know, a couple of Hail Marys, "Can you get me out of here?" And in all those days, I never did once, not even in the crevasse. I never thought of some God or some omniscient being that'd lean down and give me help, and I feel, actually, if I had believed that, I just would've stopped and waited for it, and I would've died. And so in a way, that's why that loneliness, I think, came in. I was 25, I was fit, strong, ambitious. I wanted to climb the world and I was dying. There was no afterlife, there's no paradise, there's no heaven. It's just dead. And I really didn't want to lose that. I've got immense respect for other people's religions, be it Christian or Buddhist, Hindu or Muslim. I just…I don't happen to have a belief, and I've tested that atheism, so, um, I respect my own lack of belief now. Before, I was never quite sure."

I recommend his book "touching the void" It is the best thing I have read - totally pisses on the bible

Then you could actually do some research before wafting your generalised sweeping evangie bullshit towards us

I pray. I argue for justice (remember that strange concept that cannot exist in the athiest world of moral relativism?)

Oh dear, someone doesn't get the the fact that you can have justice in a relativist system - what reverend fuckflaps is of course referring to here are these moral absolutes like stoning gays that he can not provide the slightest shred of evidence for.

Did the jews ever get justice for centuries of christian atrocities committed against them in the name of jesus?

Sorry - but the notion of God using ,natural' causes is perfectly logical.

Yet reverend retard believes in a literal fall http://www.freechurch.org/issues/2005/jan05.htm

where he writes

""He [Darwin] makes one big mistake quot; he assumes that the world as it is now is the world as God created it. But that is not the case. When you read Genesis One notice the repeated refrain, 'And God say that it was good'. God did not create the world to have natural disasters, cancer and death. Something came into the world which has upset the natural order of things and polluted the whole environment. That is why, as Paul tells us in Romans 8, the whole creation 'groans as in the pangs of childbirth'. We are faced with two choices quot; either the world is as it is because that is the way things are, or things are the way things are because sin came in and corrupted a good and perfect creation."

This is not compatible with evolution fanny baws. You have been challenged on this before, but you just pished yer pants and ran off to sit on the archbishops hand. Despite your pretences, you are a creationist goofball.

It seems that your disgustingly perverse view of humanity does not esteem human life.

Bet I dont get a straight answer from numb nuts on this one.

Yes, one of the most pathetic things I have read about dating is that the bible was written by eye witnesses, so that trumps science. But, lets hear his date and we can check out who ruled Egypt at the time and ask him to explalin why there is continuity in the phaoronic line when all mankind was supposedly obliterated. People must have reproduced with the speed of bacteria back then.

No, I'm sorry but it is much more complicated than that. There are all kinds of anomalous results.

And there are all sorts of safe guards. Here is one by a christian since you dont like TO http://www.asa3.org/aSA/resources/Wiens.html

And trees protruding through multiple strata that are supposed to be millions of years old are a problem for you.

Except they are not laid down over millions of years. The occur in regions of high deposition rates - including sites of volcanic activity and - not a flood! So, you were saying.....?

Sorry but I missed it. Repost and I'll look at it when I get a chance. Was it your own argument in your own words or a TO link? I don't read the latter having spent so much time reading inane arguments there.

No, it was my own argument. I cant reember where it is, but near where I live, there are coal deposits sandwiched between coral refs. These are mature environments that take a lot of time to develop - explain!
I could also piont out fosilised sand dunes on top of water deposited sediments that were then covered with more waterborne sediments. You got any arguments of your own that do not come from AIG?

Still waiting yo hear if you have actually read those T.rex papers in Science or not - and what you make of paper 3. I can guess where you got it and what particular misrepresentation it was trying to make.

Hope Goldy oesn't mind me jumping in here.

I assume you are referring to "junk DNA". If that is the case, I'm afraid you are out of date.

Typical YEC insult. No evidence given either. What about ice fish that have no haemoglobin genes, but retain non functional forms? What about the L-gulonolactone oxidase pseudogene in humans?

If your flood idea is correct, then all sedimentary rocks should date to within a 40 day period. Have you even got a technique that shows all sedimentary rock is of that age, let alone what age it is?

Txpiper,

I believe I am still waiting for a reply.

The whole process is circular because they use the rocks to date the fossils, and the fossils to date the rocks.

Except there is consistency in the radiometric dating. It is one verifying the other. Some fossils occur in defined sequences - even on opposite sides of the Atlantic. This stratification is a problem for you - as are coral reefs and coal forests which I challenged you about a while back.

I want to hear some dating methods you use to show the earth is young.
I believe Quetz has already challenged you provide some positive evidence of your own - and not try (and fail) to discredit science.

I dont think you have read these

By the way, most of you don't seem to be up to date about what has gone on with that. I think you can set up an account for free to access things that are not current, but here are the latest links I know of:

From briefly looking at them, number 3 seems to shoot down your own argument - they claim the tyrannosaurus sample is not satisfactory for analysis - although the younget mastodon one is.

You have to show that it is not possible for protiens to hang about that long - and you have the problem of no human and dinosaur fossils EVER being foung together. This corroborates the ancient age model.

No, and I won't argue the point again. If it seems reasonable to you that unfossilized bone and reconstitutable vascular tissue can be preserved for 68,000,000 years then by all means, enjoy your credulous expectations.

Lets look at it this way - one fossil out of billions MAY have some original organic material in it.

We can extract biomolecules from tree stumps that are a few thousand years old - why then do we have trouble with the overwhelmingly vast majority of dinosaur fossils that YECs claim are only a few thousand years old?

I write as someone who went with an open mind, looking to be convinced and presented with the evidence.

Dont lie! You believe in A literal fall - that makes you a creationist.
You have obviously lied in the past (what a fucking surprise) when you said that you believed in evolution.

Are we supposed to take the opinion of someone who says that his inviible friend is as real as his wife seriously?

Personally, I point amd laugh at you.

Religious scholars say that God suspended the laws of incest in the early days of man in order to ensure that man spread on the earth. In the words of the commentators of the Douay Rheims Bible: "God [dispensed] with such marriages in the beginning of the world, as mankind could not otherwise be propagated."

What pish. God could have made several people. Also, if god is perfect - and his laws are perfect, then surely allowing something (or bringing into being something) that is imperfect makes him imperfect.
