51. We need to stop being such cowards about Islam

Comment #229713 by utelme on August 14, 2008 at 1:01 am

Good luck England, I wish you all the best but I think it's too late for you. You've been debating this issue for how long? It's obvious you still don't know what to do. You're like the victim that's getting bashed, trying to talk the bully out of it, crying for mummy and not lifting a finger to help yourself. Take on your attackers one at a time, trying to take on Islam and at the same time his buddies Christianity and the other sycophants is a hopeless cause.

55. Call to teach biblical creation as science

Comment #225551 by utelme on August 7, 2008 at 1:57 am

Since the religites are so hell-bent on pushing through the teaching of Genesis Creationism as science, we should pre-empt them by actively publicising the contradictions in the bible in every form of medium available: in news articles, in videos, in pictures/illustrations etc

This is one of the better ideas espoused on this forum. We need to not only defend science but go on an all out attack on the basis of the silly belief systems that these people have, eg, bible, koran, bhagavad gita all the other fantasy and neurological damage driven obsessions placed into written history by mentally deluded sado-masochists. The focus also needs to be put on the ordinary person/child not just those who enjoy intellectual debate.

There is no real moderate side to any religion. Scratch one of the brothers and you scratch them all. Take a wafer which the faithful believe has "transubstantiated" (whatever that means)into God then you offend them all. Show a picture of Mohammed to the world ( especially in bed with his 9 year old wife) then you offend all muslims.
So what? They have offended the saner side of humanity for centuries with their jihads, inquisitions, threats of never ending suffering for you and your children and glorying in it. And they have the nerve to take offense at non believers not following their insane ideology. Fuck off!

Ah I forgot, Iran is the new bogeyman

Sorry, don't believe in the bogeyman. But if you mean that I think that Iran is led by Islamic lunatics ( Ahmmadaboutjihad and his islamic cronies) and that his threat to Israel is merely a joke then I think that you're wrong. I think that religious fundamentalism that considers the Western world Satanic (for you, bogeyman) and welcomes the concept of martyrdom, coupled with nuclear weapons is a very scary concept. My point was that a nuclear conflagration was possible way before everyone dies of starvation as a cause of nature. This does not mean that I think that global warming and the hogging of resources by the West is not a problem.

Maybe for some but I doubt it

Back at you. I think that there needs to be a whole new approach to the criminal justice system. There's a fair bit of research by neuroscientists that indicates that we're just prisoners of our brain configuration and that behaviour is basically pre-determined by that. The environment may have some effect but if your circuitry is faulty then you're going to find it much harder to conform to societel norms than those with more "ideal" neurocircuitry. I concede your points but in the final analysis am more interested in the survival of the innocent.

Comment #215462 by utelme on July 22, 2008 at 1:13 am

The point can only be "The west needs to be more perfect". To this agree, but get real if you think there is a legitimate comparison between targeting a terrorist (even in an unjust war) and blowing up a bus load of children

LOL

So you think the above is worthy of derision and you see something funny in children being blown up if they're on the opposite side to your sad ideology. I think you merit the title of "buffoon". Anyone who follows a philosophy that deliberately targets children to further their cause is a sick bastard and those that laugh at it far worse.

64. Nine face stoning death in Iran

Comment #215427 by utelme on July 21, 2008 at 9:47 pm

There's a simple reason that the threat of death doesn't deter some criminals.. they simply aren't scared enough of death. In fact, there is no deterrence or threat that has any effect for some criminals. Years ago , whilst in the army I had a couple of friends that were absolutely fearless and in my opinion crazy. They'd go body surfing down a river in a raging torrent in the middle of the night, come out bruised and battered and laughing and cut themselves with knives to prove what warriors they were. There's something missing upstairs for some people and nothing you can do, short of lobotomy, will change them. Have a look at the behaviour of some of the criminals in those television "hardest prisons" shows. Most of them are laughing at the bleeding hearts on the outside. Rehabilitation works for some and not for others. Perhaps we need better methods of determining who will re-offend and deal with those appropriately. That, depending on the crime, may merit the death penalty, and that's not for revenge or any other of the touted motives, just protection of the innocent.

After all - the US government thinks waterboarding, sleep deprivation is all a matter of course.

Why the red herrings about sleep deprivation, waterboarding. Talk about a piss poor comparison to being stoned to death! At least most of the civilised world have the luxury of being able to protest barbarism and many people are trying to do something about it. Think of the poor bastards getting those rocks smacked into their heads, they have little hope. No courts to hold up for years even when you're guilty as sin as some of the poor deprived and tortured terrorists are able to do in the West. So the men and women are buried at different depths before stoning..I'll bet these twisted Islamics bury the women up to their chests because the poor stoner might see their breasts or some such wanking bullshit.

Comment #214817 by utelme on July 20, 2008 at 11:48 pm

Indeed. It was a while back there was an article on this site about a imam in Saudi Arabia calling for a conference between all monotheists. One of the orders of business was the rise of atheism, something which he said they should all fear, I sentiment with which I agree

Call me cynical, but I've always believed that the main reason for these monotheistic councils is not for peace in the world but to cement their hold on people's minds. The brothers in blood, torture and sadism are worried. I sincerely hope they have cause to be.

I have little problem with being regarded as "amoral and all that" but draw the line when threats become physical, when my children or loved ones are threatened, or when I see a threat to my society by people who want to convert me to their particular worldview, and not only want to convert me by force but also threaten me/them with bogeyman fanatasies that could only have been conceived in an insane asylum. I much prefer to let the "unholy" quintet of Dawkins, Dennett, Harris, Hitchens and PZ do the attacking for me, they're much more eloquent than I am. I'm extremely glad to see that reason is going on the offensive. I hope that this is just the groundswell of a huge movement that will finally rid us of the sado-masochists that masquerade as our "spiritual" leaders.

We need to remember that while it may be considerate to remember the "feelings" of the religious, they show little, if any , consideration of the atheistic viewpoint. Instead, a large number of them, relish the concept of the torture of you and your children in their sado-masochistic fantasy, future world and show great relish in reminding you of this "fact". I am glad PZ Myers has the courage to stand up to them and rub some of their stupidity in their faces.

Dear President Robert H Bruininks

I write this in support of Professor PZ Myers who is currently being victimised by religious fanatics in regard to a cracker which they claim is Jesus Christ himself. Whilst I have no problem with the comparison, I don't think that many rational people take this dogma seriously. Many religious people also seem to find the theory of evolution as offensive, including any scientific discoveries or theories which disagree with their worldview. It is refreshing to find people like PZ Myers who is willing to stand up to their bullying and extremely sad to see the vitriolic threats and sometimes personal attacks upon their persons. In the current climate of religious fanaticism and the lengths these people take to exact their revenge, I applaud Professor Myers in his stand. His website and blog is extremely informative, interesting, analytical and courageously willing to stand against ignorance, superstition, dogma, intolerance and the sometimes murderous intent of the fanatic. I sincerely hope that you will support him in every way possible.

For those that can be bothered, read Jonathan Kirsch's book " A History Of The End Of The World". It makes you sad for mankind to think that this piece of sado-masochist junk portrays Christianity's God. Comment #202799 by utelme on July 2, 2008 at 2:31 am

People are far more likely to have certain experiences that overwhelm them and don't seem like conclusions of rational arguments, but seem like a kind of momentary contact with something genuinely transcendent. You say there's something more to the world than the atoms and molecules. Out of that experience comes a religious commitment.

This sums up all the waffle, it's experiences not rationality that determines his worldview and religion. So I guess that Mohammed talking to the angel Gabriel must be true. That Mormon dude who had a chat with the angel Moroni also has truth. The schizophrenic talking to the lamp post and thinking he's talking to God is inspired. Talking in tongues and prophesying is also "momentary contact with something genuinely transcendant". I need to have a beer..maybe a few!

I think that they are more concerned as to whether the offender is regarded as insane or retarded in some manner but not so much in regard to genetic predisposition to certain forms of behaviour, eg, kleptomania, perversion, etc. This also opens up a can of worms for the religious dogmatic and their concept of free will. Comment #202736 by utelme on July 1, 2008 at 11:08 pm

I meant that if our genes predispose us to certain forms of behaviour then "free will" is not entirely free. If this is the case then, to be fair, courts should take into account these genetic factors in determining their verdicts. The genes affect our brains, hence our minds, and our bodies. The playing field is not level.

Is anyone seriously believing that more than a fraction of religious people have even a smattering of understanding of their belief system (including all the various faith systems)? Most of the catholics I know could care less about the intricacies and intellectual theology of their faith. They just want to be led by the nose by their priest and re-assured of their salvation. Very few of them would have studied Aquinas or Augustine or any other of the early church theologians of their faith. Most adults are just as much a child in this respect as their children are. Yes, some of the adults are capable of doing the research into their religion but the vast majority couldn't be bothered. That's what makes the religious so dangerous. They don't want to think, it's too hard.

Oops, pressed submit by accident. I've had one of those certified IQ tests by a psychologist after my neurologist referred me to one. Took all afternoon and involved more than just numerical/visuo spatial/language stuff, but also memory processing problems and logical thinking exercises with the psychologist. I wouldn't be surprised to find that Professor Lynn was correct in his study but agree that education would also be extremely important. I think that those of higher IQ tend to question everything and will not overlook logical fallacies and will want the evidence for a particular belief to be there. If the evidence provided shows convoluted thinking and contradictions then it has little chance of convincing them.
