"I hear atheist-evagelists (Dawkins and Harris included) claim that a belief in a personal god has been a (the?) decisive factor in many of the word's large-scale killings, and I think this claim is not very well supported by evidence and worse leads to pointless pissing matches."
Perhaps Riley would like to comment on "God and the Fight Against Aids"?

Thanks for the update JohnC. It's an issue that always comes into mind, whenever I read xtians banging on about their superior morality. I did read quite an interesting article on the web recently, (dated 2005), reguarding how the money from Bush's 15 billion dollar AIDS funding package was likely to be distributed. It started off with this:
"In 2003, President George W. Bush asked Congress for $15 billion to fight AIDS in developing countries. During the 1990s, HIV spread rapidly, especially in Africa, where some 250 people were dying from AIDS every hour. The US had been accused of not doing enough to fight the epidemic, and when the bill passed, many conscience-stricken Americans, moved by images in the press of dying women and children, praised the administration. But some were not sure. Much of the money will go to church-affiliated charities or faith-based organizations, including some evangelical Christian groups that have very little experience with AIDS."

Everytime, I have brought this issue up with xtians taking that high moral stance, I have been met with silence.

Reguarding the issue of morality. Are christian missionaries still preaching against the use of condoms in areas of developing countries which are rife with AIDS? Africa for example?

Oh ...and mental wanker (aka John Cornwell), let's play molecular biology/genetics next time! I so enjoy that rhetoric/game so much more than the tired old one, which you and your ilk dribble out over and over again.
Happy pagan Holiday festival to you and yours :)

Guess I have just outed myself on this forum as an theist, huh?

John Cornwell as God
Nascistic, long winded and incorporating all the same old repeated fallacies proclaimed by the jesusists/godists in the past.
Nothing more than a mental wank to try and force himself on anyone who bothers to read it.
You'd think god could make it's point in a newspaper article using less than 3085 words.

"What interests me: are they frauds or do they really believe in their weird theories."
ridelo, I often wondered the same thing when I initially began to delve more into the YEC/IDiot movement. I'm loathe to call it a debate, being that I have yet to see any decent grounded scientic evidence of one.
After visiting quite a number of site fronts (eg IRC,Discovery and others) for these groups over the past few months, I can only describe these people as spin doctors. The YECS (a term they use themselves) and the IDiots (what I call the intelligent design lot) each have their own particular style of rhetoric. The YECs seem to always go in for the hard and fast "literal bible" sell, with a loud brash marketing cry of "this many scientists support the scientific basis of genesis". The IDiots, in comparison, appear a little more subdued in their selling tactics and rhetoric. No doubt, due to the fact they want their brand to be implemented, as science, in schools.
I think these scientists are salesmen and their futures now lie in sucessful sales of these products. Just my opinion. Who knows?

"Everybody loves mavericks, but these charlatans are not scientists."
These people obviously want nothing less than to legislate their own version of science itself into education.
I think this article sums up YEC/ID "science" quite well.

"It's a war between religious extremists and the rest of humanity including the religious."
Hear, hear!
Surely the more moderate religious (of all persuasions), are becoming increasingly aware of the damage these extremists are doing to tolerance of religion in general. They must stand up and be counted.

Talk Origins covers most of the YEC/IDiot claims well. I haven't yet read through this topic though.

You have to wonder if Professor Andrew McIntosh can even say the word 'photosynthesis'. Still, the YECs proclaim any supporter who has a science degree, reguardless of his/her field of achievement.

'You can find some of McIntosh's thoughts on thermodynamics and evolution expressed at the web site' Answers in Genesis:

.
I can't find anything in McIntosh's bio, which would qualify him to make assessments/judgements on biological or evolutionary processes.

'It seems that Andy believes that there is some intrinsic property or information required simply to hold chemical bonds together. So his assessment is even worse than previously believed. Not only does he think Evolution by Natural Selection violates the Second Law, but he believes that without invoking divine machinery, the simple concept of a chemical bond would violate it as well.'
.
Oh dear! Do you suppose we could consider hydrophobic effects, pi stacking interactions, hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions, which maintain the stability of the DNA molecule, as intrinsic properties? (information I learnt in Ist year uni level biochemistry BTW!)
This guy (a professor?) obviously doesn't have much grounding in the way of chemistry! (or scientific reasoning, for that matter)

According to this guy, he has evidence that Mithras is a rip off from christianity. Where does he find the supporting evidence for this assertion? Why,in the bible of course! However, the author of the post at this site,(Jack Wallace),does go into some in-depth detail about presumptions of the pagan origins of christianity.

This is where I went to:-
From Bill Dembski:
"The Judge Jones School of Law" is the brainchild of brilliant professional flash animator (I think of him as the "Rembrandt" of flash animation; for now he will remain anonymous until he sees the fallout from his handiwork) as well as of me and my lovely wife Jana (who came up with the name). We present this as a Christmas gift to students everywhere. Around Christmas last year, Judge Jones did you the disservice of shafting you royally. This time it's your turn to laugh at his expense. Yes, the humor is adolescent, but overwhelmingevidence.com is a site for adolescents, and you are, after all, the ones who got shafted, having to endure the imbecility that is Darwinism at school by being forcefed this materialist ideology in the name of science."
