Comment #70678 by ksskidude on September 16, 2007 at 2:59 pm

It kills me that people are actually critizing a group of individuals that are actually making a difference.
I for one am sick and tired of having to defend science( Embryonic stem cell research) against a bunch of christian idiots.
The RRS is up front and center and are not hiding behind thier avatars. Until I see web sites and op-eds from all the nay-sayers here, I would just recommended reading the comments, instead of actually commenting. Anyone can hide behind an anonymous name.

Brian and Kelly keep up the good work!!

I think maybe all of you should go to the Rational Responders(rationalresponders.com) web site and see for yourselves that they are incredibly important for our cause. There are many different ways to skin a cat, and the Rational Response Squad is putting it out there. They are trying to invoke change, because before the last year and half, atheist's were manily silent, and what had been done before obviously wasn't doing anything, IMO.

Both Brian and Kelly are incredibly intelligent and express themselves very well indeed. Do they come across as angry at times, yes, but I'm pissed off a lot as well. Basically they have said, enough is enough. Kind words and logical arguments might work for some, but there are plenty of ignorant fools out there, i.e. Kirk Cameron, Ray Comfort, Kent Hovid, etc.. that need to be put in thier place.

I for one support the RRS 110%!

One last thing, RD was a guest on their show, and I don't think he would have done that if he did not support them either.

While this is a sad and terrible reality of our world, it is very well portrayed in the HBO series "Big Love."

If your looking for great entertainment and a in depth look at polygamy, watch this show. Its really quite good.

Great as usual!! Sam is spot on! I think I have finally come to answer when asked the questio if you could have dinner with five people dead or alive who would it be? I would have to say Robert Ingersoll, Sam Harris, Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, and the richest Atheist in the world. If were going to make the radical changes we need to make, we need to mobilize and start campaigning even more than we are now.

56. We need a more intelligent religion debate

Comment #68603 by ksskidude on September 7, 2007 at 7:56 pm

"The anti-religious person needs to believe this. It provides grounds for hope. If humanity moves away from religion, things will get better. It's a faith."

How can the nimrod be serious? Anti-religious don't hope it will work, they know it will work. Why, because the evidence of countries that are more non-relgious speaks for itself. Even if there were no evidence at all at this time, it doesn't mean that evidence through observation can not be gathered.

Does anyone know if the debate that RD and CH and AC were doing is on video anywhere?

58. There is no God and Dawkins is his Prophet

Comment #66989 by ksskidude on September 1, 2007 at 8:29 am

Well I believe we all live inside the finger nail of a giant ( Animal House idea)from another space and time. Inside that giants nail is a replica of his world when first created. See the universe is 100 trillion years old, I just know this, trust me, I feel it truth pulsing through my 12 DNA stainds. Actually though, I had a vision, no, a dream, wait, a revelation from this giant, looks kinda like ah, Shrek, and he told me so. He also wrote a book and called it the bible. Man's he is so intelligent, because look at how beautiful this world is, the mountains, and streams, and the death and rape.....

I am not very creative, that was a poor attempt at humor, but, I guess if I had to imagine a world in which I would create. I think I could come up with a better world. Like Sam Harris said, surely we could have written a better ten commandments if we were omniscient. We would know that the people that were going to screw it all up because of the original vagueness.
How people can defend such incompetence of 'all-everything' deity is beyond me, and because of that outrageous incompetence, not be able to see its untruth. It simply makes no sense for a so-called perfect deity to get anything wrong. Wait for it.........wait..........."god works in mysterious ways. we can't understand everything." I guess you also don't understand the defintion of perfect.

Comment #66577 by ksskidude on August 30, 2007 at 1:42 pm

As always Sam delivers the goods.

What troubles me most is how MT suffered with her doubts and had to endure needless guilt. What always troubles me is how religites will spin this in their favor, as "we all have doubts, that's normal." But when pressed about their doubts and why they feel the need to preach about something for which they have doubts, it doesn't ever seem to register to them, that it is wrong.

Comment #65015 by ksskidude on August 22, 2007 at 4:15 pm

My submission

I am an atheist, I have no faith at all. I do not believe in magic, fairies, fairy tales, elves, unicorn's, Zeus, Thor or Athena. I can not prove that any of these things or god's exist or don't exist, but I can make an educated guess.
Science and reason and logic have provided enough evidence for me to come to the conclusion that there is no god, just like there is no Santa Claus. If one does thier dudiligence and still decides to believe, so be it. Just please don't legislate it. There is no proof, thus the need for faith.

65. The Out Campaign

Comment #59761 by ksskidude on July 30, 2007 at 3:08 pm

Its scary as hell coming out in a red state like MO. But I did indeed do just that. Here is my letter to the editor called, "The New Brights, and Why I Am One Of Them."
I understand that many have issues with the term Bright, but my local paper would not print anything I wrote with Atheist in it. So I altered it a bit, and got a response. They have confirmed that I wrote it, and said they plan on printing it. Only time will tell

I am a liitle nervous, but all in all pleased with what I have done.

Here is the Editorial I wrote,

What is a Bright you ask? According to the Brights Web site http://www.the-brights.net , a bright is a person who has a naturalistic worldview. Whose worldview is free of supernatural and mystical elements. In a nutshell, we do not believe in a god or gods. Brights are individuals who do not think alike on many issues, and it is not our desire to press for conformity.

My journey to becoming a bright started long ago. I have always been skeptical and inquisitive. So when my questions about god or the bible were unanswered or answered with, "God works in mysterious ways," I would walk away frustrated, angry and dejected. As I became more educated I learned of many other religions and many other ways to view the world. With this knowledge I was forced conclude, they all can't be correct.

So who was right? Talk to a Christian and they will tell you, they have the one true path to God. Ask a Muslim, they will tell you that they have the one true path, etc.... This was no help either. So I read the bible, and the more I read, the more I was aghast at the cruelty and vengeance of God in the Old Testament. But when you are dead in the Old Testament, that was it. The New Testament God, while he has a great many lessons to teach, wants to punish you forever if you choose not to believe. This did not sound like a God of love to me.

All of this led me to become an agnostic. I felt that I could not prove whether god exists or not. Nor could anyone else for that matter. So agnosticism seemed the correct decision.

Then Amendment 2 (www.missouricures.com) became a huge issue in our state. I am a proponent and a staunch advocate for all forms of stem cell research, and was a member of the Missouri Coalition For Life Saving Cures. I would argue with opponents, and the one constant attack on the research was that it was against God's will. I would ask, how do they know? Former Senator and Episcopal Minister John Danforth, says otherwise. Of course I would ask Senator Danforth the same question.

I could not understand how one could make that argument, when they can not prove that God even exists. They were arguing on faith. All other arguments are easily countered because of science. This attack by the religious on the potential cures that could from stem cell research, was the tipping point for me. I began to read and study once again, and this time I read a book, called the God Delusion, by Richard Dawkins, and The End Of Faith by Sam Harris, Atheism, A Case Against God by George Smith, and many many more.

The more I read, the brighter I became. The more knowledge I consumed about astronomy, biology, physics, geology, etc..the less and less the probability of the existence of god became. I became a bright, because my worldview does not include any supernatural or mystical elements. If you want to believe in the supernatural, that is your choice, just don't try to legislate it.

66. An Atheist Responds

Comment #56358 by ksskidude on July 15, 2007 at 9:18 am

IQHQ,

I disagree that everything would be premitted. Whether or not there is a god or not does not matter. There may be an intial wave of irrational acts after the death of someone's god. That is why we have laws in place now. Not because of a god, but because of the functionality of our society. If everyone judt did what they wanted to do, we would have complete chaos. This is understood among all of us now.

People will adjust and learn that if they want to live in a safe society than they too, will have to follow the mandates that have been set.

Comment #56356 by ksskidude on July 15, 2007 at 9:01 am

IQHQ

"Such sentiment is noble in that recognises the importance of "intention" in determining the inherent morality of a given act. Yet would we really prefer people "not to bother"? Consider this long and hard, for your answer will determine a lot about how you proceed in this "God Debate". The simple fact is that many people DO act morally for these reasons, and may not act the same way otherwise. But we need not be just as skeptical about it as some have suggested"

I disagree that people would stop there altruistic
behaviors if they came to grips with there is no god. Ultimately people will then soon learn that being kind and giving had nothing to do with a reward from some god, but rather an act of humanity. Thus they will learn and then contunie thier charitable work.

Because it's the right thing to do!

I don't even know where to start when talking about dipshit hannity. I usually never watch anything on fox news. Its awful and usually always wrong.

Hitchens as usual owned the interviewer and made hannity look ignorant and silly. The only problem is, that most Americans are ignorant and silly, and have never read an atheistic book in their miserable life.

I think what Chris Matthews should have said was, that the reason the question is asked about evolution, is to determine your capacity to THINK. Your capacity to interpret information and come to a logical conclusion. Obviously Delay, Huckabee, the rest of the non-evolutionist are incapable of running a classroom let alone a country. Thats what Matthews should have said!!

"You know how atheists are. Grammy or Grampy or Fluffy dies, or Sister Mary hits them one too many times with the steel ruler, and God gains a lifelong enemy."

It never ceases to astound me how believers never seem to grasp our non-belief. Why do they always asssume we are mad at god?

Articles like this one are why most believers continue to delude themselves into believing we are angry. Well their right about the anger, but wrong about the reason why.

Yes we are angry; we are angry because we are tired of stupidity. Tired of fairy tale beliefs. Tired of morons, christians, muslims, hindu's, etc.. tired of them not opening thier eyes and reading anything about the world other than their idiotic "good books."

Comment #41927 by ksskidude on May 17, 2007 at 10:02 am

It seems to me that all of these "believers" are not seeing the big picture. Yes we know that the majority of people of faith are not fundies. But it still doesn't excuse the delusion that they try to perpetuate. I am so tired of 4 billion different definitions of what and who god is or is not.

Note to all of you believers; you can still have community get togethers, you can still do kind acts, give to the poor, be grateful, be thankful, all without a delusional belief in a fictious god. Religion is not needed anymore, its time has come and gone. Hitchens understands this, I understand this, as do most on this site.

Why the continued defense of something that is so indefensiable to begin with?

75. Hitchens' flat world

Comment #41639 by ksskidude on May 16, 2007 at 12:45 pm

I think that theist's and believers in the supernatural are just different than we are, "we" being atheist. I guess what I am saying is; that just like a certain percentage of the population is always going to be gay, so is a certain percentage always going to be intelligent. Obviously we are in the minority of people who think about things rationally and logically.

De Souza is understandably upset at Hitchens, and is fearful of what Hitchens writes is true. But it is very clear that De Souza is unable to put it all together and see things as they truly are revealed.

My op-ed to the Kansas City Star

This is in response to the story that was ran on KCTV 5 concerning the
question, "Does God Exist?" KCTV 5 should have its license revoked.
How
can a TV station in 2007, run a story with a physics professor claiming
God
can be proven using a mathematical equation. But then have no counter
opinion, no other credible sources to counter this wild notion of
proving
God through mathematics. It would be like airing a Muslim had proven
Allah
to be the one true God with his mathematical equation, and then have no
Christian or Jew, or Hindu, Atheist etc. to counter the opinion.
The fact of the matter is this, God can not be proven by math or by any
other formula. A belief in a God, is a belief in the supernatural, a
belief
in in something for which there is no proof, other than the weak
excuse, one
calls faith.
It's a faith that one holds on to for dear life, despite the mounds of
evidence against it. I for one find no reason, no evidence to believe
in
anything supernatural.

81. 'god is not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything' by Christopher Hitchens

Comment #36219 by ksskidude on April 30, 2007 at 2:21 pm

At this point it really isn't about the argument for why one should become an atheist. It is much more about the voicing of atheism by the masses. We all need to come out of the wood work and shout at the top of our lungs! It's time for the world to hear us in numbers.

None of us will have any new arguments to offer, but what we will have is a larger voice. A voice that has been oppressed for centuries.

I am 210 pages into Hitchens book and I am enjoying it emmensely. While I have no need of convincing, I am learning a great many things for which I did not know. His book is a must read for the anyone who considers themselves an intellectual.
Read it! It is worth your time.

I believe this would absolutely work if marketed and advertised the right way.
I find myself however, tired and frustrated with people of faith. I am getting to a point that I don't even want to speak with my friends anymore.

As for the battle for stem cell research, I for one am sick and tired of religion getting in the way of life saving cures.

84. Fighting Words: A wartime lexicon

Comment #35093 by ksskidude on April 26, 2007 at 7:18 am

I am 100 pages into the book and its worth every penny! Hitchens has a knack for being able to say exactly what I have been thinking for years. It is inspiring, because I am getting more and more prepared to get in the fight.

I am planning on writing an op-ed titled, "An Agnostic turned Atheist," Over the battle of embryonic stem cell research. But am a little leary because I am in the public eye, and am fairly worried about the backlash that might ensue.
However reading Dawkins and Harris and Hitchens has given me more than enough ammo to stand up for what I believe to be truth, based on evidence or lack there of. I spent an entire year on the campaign trail to keep Embryonic Stem Cell research legal in my state. I have been called "baby killer," told I walk with the devil, and had to listen to yokel zealots tell me how it was aginst God's will. I had to hear Alan Keyes, tell everyone that "God hates people who are in favor of ESCR."
But the worst part for me, was that I was unable to challenge those idiotic superstitious beliefs because I was a part of a coalition that was trying to win votes. Talkings points were key, along with a perverbial muzzle.

We won and the amendment did pass, but only by 50K votes out of 4million. Needless to say, the dim witted representatives who are "Christian" are again trying to ban and outlaw ESCR once again. It is mind boggleing.

Is it really that surprising in a world of 6 billion people, for one of them to snap and kill people? Honestly I am surprised that it doesn't happen more often.

Just off the top of my head Bob Geldof springs to mind. Can anyone think of any more?

By no means am I even close to having a following, but I speak to students around the country USA, and soon around the world about the prevention of brain and spinal cord injuries and I am an Atheist. However I do not come out and say that in any of my presentations. Except I say that, " you can't pray these injuries away." People tell me all the time that I am a walking medical miracle. Of course I know differently. I broke my neck and was paralyzed from the neck down. My spinal cord had been severely bruised and flattend due to swelling in the spinal column.

Needless to say, my spinal cord did indeed give me a window of opportunity, and I maximized the opportunity to recover most but not all of my physical attributes. Now all of the crazy believers want to give credit to thier God. "Your so lucky, do you thank God for your recovery?"

I always respond with, "do you really believe that if I had just laid in bed and uttered prayers, I would have had the recovery I had?"

I AM NOT A CHOSEN OR A MEDICAL MIRACLE, just someone who made the most of a really catastrophic

I take Prozac, and amitrirtyline at night, and hve no sex drive. None. It isn't important to me. But my wife hates it. I don't want to be any more depressed than I already am about the life ahead of me of pain. We are stil trying to find the right mixture of pain meds, and ssri's but it is proving to be difficult.

Compared to me you are a young guy, I'm 63 and you didn't tell me what you thought of her. It's just that my perception of women has changed as I age and I wanted to see if young guys today feel as I did. I'm like RickM, I think Helen is attractive but "hotness" doesn't play a big part for me now, as a young man I liked all kinds of women but the older I got the more emphasis I placed on intelligence. Nowadays, I much prefer intelligent women to "pretty" women -- they're ten-a-penny, but "beautiful" women in the fullest sense of the word, are a much rarer and valuable breed.

I agree 100%. However, when I see a realy fine looking woman my heart starts to pound. Its true, and even still at 36. But if I am having a stimualting conversation, say with a women who is an Atheist, I don't think my heart would be race quite as fast as if I were talking to, "Gezelle."

The following is from an email correspondence I am having with a friend of mine. He sent this to me last week. Very eerie to read this. I always knew my friend was out there.

Guys like Weinberg and Dawkins. Man you need to read these guys. They are complete freaks. Both of which want to ban religion completely. They and their flocks of atheists are the enemies of freedom just as ones before them were. Listening to them talk is like listening to Stalin, Lenin, or Mao. It is interesting though that we can guess with incredible, reasonable, accuracy that the 3% of Americans that are atheist (from Joe's Newsweek Piece) are also political ideologs from the furthest reaches of the left wing? Like the A.C.L.U. (Atheists, Communists, Liberals, United). It is not a coincidence.

Compared with this from the following article

America is being ruled by evil, clandestine organizations that hide behind the veneer of liberal, democratic groups. These clandestine forces seek to destroy Christians. They spread their demonic, secular humanist ideology through front groups such as the American Civil Liberties Union, People for the American Way, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the National Organization for Women, Planned Parenthood, the Trilateral Commission and "the major TV networks, high-profile newspapers and newsmagazines," the U.S. State Department, major foundations (Rockefeller, Carnegie, Ford), the United Nations, "the left wing of the Democratic Party" and Harvard, Yale "and 2,000 other colleges and universities." All of these groups have joined forces, LaHaye has warned, to "turn America into an amoral, humanist country, ripe for merger into a one-world socialist state."

Very Scary!!

It seems like I read a ton more of these kind of articles than I would like to. We need a bigger voice! We must write more op-eds ourselves. I would like to prepose a new section on RD's web site, and that section would be for all of RD's members who have written op-eds, and have had them published. I think we need a call to action, and it should start soon.
If you have written an op-ed, I for one would love to read it.

They are definetly real. I went to KU and saw Fred Phelps on the Kansas Campus all the time. Back then it was the same nonsense as well. Creepy, and sad all at the same time. I think RD should speak publicly about it, and show how the Phelps are in their right minds. Why, because it does is does say, what the Phelps say, in the "Good Book."
