Bremas, I live in the U.S. and the Phelps bunch are for real. A couple of years ago I posted on a (now defunct) forum for a Portland, OR TV channel (KGW) and crossed verbal swords with one of them. They were in Portland at the time with their traveling "clown" show. These people are crazy and I agree with SonOfPearl's assessment about child abuse.
The story about the motorcyle club folks who shield families from the Phelps venom at soldier's funerals is also true. They call themselves the Patriot Guard Riders and here is a link to a Washington Post article from February 2006 about the club: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/02/18/AR2006021801422.html

re: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pe-er9FqhYA from briancoughlanworldcitizen.BrianCWC, ROTFL and thank you for the link. That is purrrrfect!
To Helian: I've lived here in the USA my whole life - born/raised on West coast; young adult to early 30's in Wyoming/Colorado; 17 years on East coast and back to West coast. I completely disagree with your assessment that Dawkins is anti-American. I saw the first TV broadcasts of mankind on the moon and I experienced firsthand when I was in high-school, the encouragement women, as well as men, received to pursue science. I abandoned science to chase the "American Dream", achieved it, and when I finally awoke from my little dream of America and that other place (the rest of the world), I didn't like myself or my country for being so self-absorbed. I admire Professor Dawkins and I am in awe that he risks his reputation to challenge the very powerful right-wing forces that I believe are trying to turn America into a Christian theocracy. No, I do *NOT* believe RD is anti-American in any way.
To Yorker: I think you need to look into what country is buying all those U.S. Treasury bonds before you make a judgement on US-China relations. I think China is financing the war in Iraq. Not that I think you are at all incorrect about China being an economic power.

This situation is deplorable, unacceptable and I will oppose it when/where I encounter it in my country. Thank you neander for making an effort to correct this situation. DarwinLoves, don't give up hope. The nut-wing religious right has irritated quite a few people and hopefully they won't be coming back in droves after November 2008.
I really wish they could defy the laws of physics and rapture on out of here. It would be nice if they took their nutty "kin" who call god by a different name with them. They could then duke it out in "heaven" (winners get all the virgins) and leave the rest of us alone to pursue the mysteries of the universe in peace.
