As an Evangelical Christian who finds creationism profoundly shallow, I'll stand with Richard Dawkins here, and hope that these shared values will prove to be deeply true either because reality is ultimately good and personal or because natural selection is somehow not as uncompassionate as it seems to be.You clearly do not understand 'natural selection'.

When genesis speaks of death it speaks of spiritual death as evidenced by God telling Adam if he ate of the fruit, he would die. He didn't die, but instead experienced a spiritual death.Bullshitter alert! Another spot your own metaphor contest.

However, I don't think there are many here who object to private belief.'Private beliefs' can result in 'public actions'. I'd much rather they were educated out of such nonsense thus eliminating the risk. (No - I'm not talking about Stalinist re-education.)
Again, I don't think you will find many atheists who object to religious education.I do. I'd much rather it was titled 'Myths and legends through the ages'

As was obvious he had swallowed the pap fed to him by his pastor without thinking. One can see the pastor claiming lots of evidence for the existence of Jesus and his congregation nodding in agreement. The authoritarian nature of the arrangement ensures that they will not doubt the claim nor will they go check that it has some truth to it.Given that - in all probability - the priest/priestess seems like a decent sort, the sheeple make the leap that they (priest/priestess) must have researched it all - in depth - so has a solid foundation for what they claim.

Ok. I state and hold that 'faith is belief without evidence' and you, MaxD, have the utter fucking gall to say, frowningly, that my definition is 'a simplistic critique and missed a huge point'.The 'faithful' believe they have evidence. They believe that The Bible (or Koran or Torah or fill in the blank) contains 'evidence'. They believe that (at least some of) the supernatural stories that are in the bible/koran/torah are literally true. (Corpses walking, walking on water, water into wine etc.) They can't grasp the idea that these are myths i.e. fiction. Just because people claim that something happened it doesn't mean that it did. A claim that 500 people saw it does not necessarily mean that 500 people did see it happen.
The HUGE point I miss is: faithheads mean something different; by faith, they mean they are FUCKING EVIDENCE DRIVEN.
Fuck off, Max. Not a fucking chance.
I could not give a flying FUCK what the 'faith minded' - to whom you grant an extraordinary level of understanding and sympathy in their linguistic plight - think they are doing. OF COURSE they are proceeding by faith alone, and I am tiring of your consistent and despicable apology for them, while you deride MY thoughts here.
MaxD, you've really fucking made a mess on this one.
So what is YOUR definition of 'faith', if you haven't obliterated it entirely?

No scientist, I had often wondered what sparked the huge increase in size of human brains. It rings a bell with me that someone (Dawkins) once said that each step of an evolutionary process merely builds on what is already there and doesn't really 'invent' things (Creotards - please don't misunderstand this idea - thank you). Interesting to see how that the different paths taken by vertebrates/invertebrates evolution has impacted on the basic building blocks for intelligence.
This fits.

Learning to stand up is one thing - learning how to get back down without falling over is another(!). Absolutely fascinating to watch how progress is made and (trying) to help the process of learning along.
I wish that you could have had the same direct experience of this with children of your own, I really do. Nieces nephews etc. just aren't the same because of the reduced 'contact time'.
