Remember though, crazy beats big every time.

My older brother fights constantly. He has always had a reputation for being crazy.

He's bigger than I am now, because he got fatter, but he used to be really skinny, and is about my height, 5'11, 6 foot abouts.

He got the shit kicked out of him by a boxer once though. The way he tells it it was more of a tie, but I wasn't there, and only got to see what he looked like afterwords. I somehow doubt the other guy was that fucked up.

You're being intellectually dishonest. You know damn well that that is exactly what your reasoning results in, but you -- for same insane reason -- just won't admit it. Do you figure no one will notice unless you admit it?

I'm not going to pin my imagination up against yours. Fabricating hypothetical scenarios for you to ad hoc away. If you so unapologetically dodge such a direct and simple question (and of all things, claim to not understand the question) then I think continuing is a waste of time.

That was just to make you squirm anyway. Your ideas don't appreciate the significant evolutionary work in the subject. Both biological, and psychological.

It also takes a dump on Richard Dawkin's The Selfish Gene. As well as the work of several other philosophers, evolutionary scientists, and psychologists.

Your "evidence" being your ability to invent reasons why every apparently altruistic action taken is actually a self-interested one.

Forgive me if I'm unimpressed.

I have a wide frame though. Maybe my body is built for faking it.

You still have failed to answer my question. A simple yes or no will suffice.

Is it not the case, that I should only uphold such ideals until the moment they conflict with a person self interest, at which time they ought be chucked to the way side?

As in, say, if I were to gain enough power that I could be more than confident that I could suppress without risk of my own suppression, then I ought to suppress? No? Why not?

I asked you if it was not the case that those civil liberties, those freedoms, should only be endorsed, and used, for as long as they server my purposes, my self interest, and chucked to the wayside the moment they do not.

If I ought, nay, must only behave in self-interested ways -- as you say -- then this is clearly the case. In order to make a case that freedom for other people, and civil liberties for other people should be upheld or respected, you must make a case that they are always, and one hundred percent of the time in my self-interest to uphold. Otherwise, my upholding them would be altruistic.

Just saying that it is the way it is, and that is how the system is set up does not address my question.

Why is the freedom of the choice important? If I am reasonably certain that denying that freedom of choice is in my personal self-interest, then isn't that what I ought do?

Why should I allow for other people's freedom of choice if it may work against my self-interest when I have the option to not allow it?

Comment #269198 by Wosret on October 22, 2008 at 6:22 pm

Well, my serious answer would be that I feel kind of solidarity with all peoples, and from this get a sense of a global community. I have no exclusivity, the type of which is created by communities that are religion specific, and have thus a wider, and almost entirely inclusive sense of community.

The actual answer would be that I'm a weird recluse that does actually talk to people in real life.

Those are the only kinds of "logical necessities". There are no other kinds. Saying "that isn't a logical necessity" void of context or conditions holds absolutely no information value. It is an entirely vacuous statement unless some things are logical necessities in all situations and contexts.

Understand?

I also see that you neglected to give the examples I requested. I wonder why.

It isn't "basic terminology", it's nonsense. Name one "logical necessity" and one judgment that is not subjectively derived.

Something is logically necessary only at the end of an argument that's premises necessitate the conclusion, or a statement which has internal conditions that necessitates its truth. Tautologies, in other words.

For instance:

"If I want an organization, then I need to organize." There. In this context, organizing is logically necessary.

Now, what the hell do you mean by what you said?

Well, to beat up and steal Tyler's pedant hat, I should point out that "intellectual" has not been defined, and actually, anyone with a degree of higher learning is an intellectual in the sense of someone who engages in intellectual pursuits. This doesn't necessarily mean that they will be an intellectual in a having a high intelligence sense.

Intellectuals of that sense are intellectuals because of the way their brain is wired, and perhaps to a degree (not in the sense of a diploma. For those that may be confused) genetic.

Though, I would argue that pursuits of higher learning equip individuals with tools that allow them to focus their innate intelligences, and for all intents and purposes, become more intelligent.

Comprehension of logic and axioms = intellect plus 10!!
