101. Faith in Britain today

The Random House Unabridged Dictionary's definition of "editor" says: "A person having managerial and sometimes policy-making responsibility for the editorial part of a publishing firm or of a newspaper, magazine or other publication; a person who edits material for publication, films etc." While technically accurate, this description of an editor's role misses the point. The job of an editor is, among other things, to prod, shape, wheedle, cajole, mediate, challenge, anticipate, nit-pick, chastise, inspire, support, confront, defend, harangue, and, as required, suggest different words, phrases, or grammar.

-I don't (after reading this bs) understand how religious stuff gets published. -the ramblin' man who wrote this stuff never stops

There is no end to this is there? *sighs* Every possible angle of hyjacking science is being pursued. You have to be a Pro-Science ACTIVIST just to keep science in this country.

Bonzai you make it sound as if beating off is a bad thing to do...it did sound so negative. I am wondering if you find something morally wrong with beating off...Could you please elaborate>

Comment #174260 by robotaholic on May 2, 2008 at 12:09 am

-that's just your brain :D - give it a break! - lol - no i love Dennett's answer to the Mary problem and also the Chinese Room experiment. I wish I could have learned from Searl! - - He's so cool. But you have to admit that Patricia Churchland's rescent thing with Voles and ethics is interesting.

oh and about my AVatar - I think it was influenced by Zombie Nation lol

112. Lying for Jesus?

Comment #174257 by robotaholic on May 1, 2008 at 11:58 pm

wow you're for real

I really care for Dennett's destruction of the classical objections of materialism - but I think he doesn't go far enough like the Churchland's do. To me- it seems they find the logical conclusion and don't care if you don't like it. lol - There are so many unresolved issues with consciousness -

Comment #174251 by robotaholic on May 1, 2008 at 11:43 pm

what would you write Mphil? because I'm a fan of both (possibly I agree with Churchlands most- uh since I'm an unfeeling pure materialist to the maximum)

I must say also that : Online Papers on Consciousness is my favorite website:
http://consc.net/online

but I don't care for Chalmers at all

117. How to reconcile Richard Dawkins?

Comment #174246 by robotaholic on May 1, 2008 at 11:37 pm

the lack of belief in a 'celestial dictatorship' doesn't autodrive them to social darwinsism - someone needs to make that point better

I think Pat Condell usually says exactly what I think but never formulated. His recent rant on Faith is AWESOME- probably his best work ever.

121. Lying for Jesus?

Comment #170653 by robotaholic on April 27, 2008 at 9:48 pm

pascal's wager is so retarded- you can't "choose" to believe anything...so pfft- nevermind - someone always brings it up and i never get it- sort of like hitler - who cares what hitler believed? - he was MAD! - just because a society accepts evolution and isn't particularly religious doesn't mean it's going to turn into a NAZI state-
-sorry for ranting

oh yeah and that reminds me - hitler isn't a good example of darwinism or evolution or whatever anyway because...weren't his parents cousins or something lol -

Bonzai you just like to argue -and you're all over the place on just about every issue in every thread- I have yet to read one sentence of yours that is not somehow, at least slightly apologetic toward irrationality-

-oh yeah and I like all kinds of music -I have 40 thousand mp3's- you probably just don't like music

Hey Bizarro retard, if you have any evidence that the invisible, intangible, inaudible, yahweh guy is not simply fiction, let's hear it- until then, it's just as easy to claim that the FSM is the essence of morality and so is my ass

Comment #170315 by robotaholic on April 27, 2008 at 3:41 pm

Bonzai I agree, but I was just showing that you were wrong...

125. Does science make belief in God obsolete?

Comment #170307 by robotaholic on April 27, 2008 at 3:32 pm

I don't think believing in the supernatural necessarily prevents one from discovering and seeking scientific knowledge
Bonzai, it technically takes up your time which could be used pursuing actual nature

I see all supernatural belief as negative as it tends to hinder the realisation of certain truths

Actually I agree that it does tend to hinder the realization of certain truths - for example if someone believes in the FSM that would hinder the realization that the FSM doesn't exist

I don't believe most people are drawn to religion because they seek a substitution for "explanations", at least not the scientific kind. I think this is a fundamental misunderstanding of what religion means to many believers.

Bonzai my parents are living proof that you are wrong.

Religions begin in mythologies
Scientology, Raeliens, universal life church, Temple of psychic youth...there are many religions that didn't originate in myth (unless you consider science fiction mythical lol)

shermer, dawkins, TCT, anyone, I don't care what the definition of god is - I am not going to worship ANYTHING - the idea of worship is perverted

127. Soldier Sues Army, Saying His Atheism Led to Threats

Comment #169711 by robotaholic on April 26, 2008 at 4:12 pm

When I read "We went to war because we thought God was on our side"- I am so amazed someone can look up at the sky, at outer space, the billions of light years of majestic galaxies and conclude that "god" would give one tiny nanosecond's thought to who wins any war on this speck of dust floating in pitch blackness. - It seems to me to be the ultimate in conceit. Religious people really are conceited.

sometimes I think things are so backwards --like if your an atheist you think this life is all there is and you will fight HARDER and the best you can- if you think there is heaven or w/e after you die, your not as good a soldier because if someone or yourself gets killed - eehh, you'll be fine in heaven-

he should NOT be allowed to wear it under any circumstances...instead he should be forcfully sodomized

just kidding, it really depends on what color it is and what else he's wearing ya know- besides most kids in school can't read anyway right? - oh and also you know as well as I do that the most homophobic ppl usually have several priest fantasies- he was probably coached to wear it by his priest (if you know what I mean lol)

i like the quote "the mind is what the brain does" - incidentally right now - Miscavage's own daughters are defecting from the church of scientology- it's on nightline-
mabye it's too soon to tell but it sounds like the whole thing is impoloding (hopefully) and mabye anonymous is having something to do with it- what do you think?

Edit - it was his niece not daughter- oh well

Comment #168147 by robotaholic on April 24, 2008 at 3:17 pm

what I don't get about Pascal's stupid wager is how do you make yourself believe anything? Either you pretty well believe it or not right?

Like Dawkins says ...to paraphrase "why is believing so important?"

Why not just be a good person, treat other's kindly, and look cute and be cute! :)

and that phrase

Perhaps he might care to re-read the book of Job.
made me upset slightly -
God asks Job where he was when He laid the foundations of the Earth?
well the earth isn't on any foundation, it's floating in dark outerspace, and Where was Lord Winston (or god for that matter)when humans were evolving for the last 200,000 yrs from our common ancestor with other great apes? -(you can see Winston here lol: http://www.robertwinston.org/)

I am pissed that he doubted Dennett's scholarship. Dennett attended Phillips Exeter Academy, and received his B.A. in philosophy from Harvard University in 1963, where he was a student of W.V. Quine. In 1965, he received his D.Phil. in philosophy from Oxford.

I have seen what Dennett can do regarding shredding an opponent in text. He's pretty vicious when he wants to be.

what is your problem theonlything2fear?- first you say:

typical atheistic evolutionary temper tantrums and name calling are contained in your form of dialogue.
and then you say proceed to do just that stating:
A shameful attempt at explaining away your own words,
"lying propaganda"

You're a hypocritical jerk.

Evolving animals on this blog, Dawkins sheep, articulate and typically have a rational point to argue, backed up of course by their hyped credentials.

Baa-aa-a-a-a--aa-a-a Ba-a--a--a--a

Intelligent Design and any scientist willing to put the topic on the table of ideas

will you tell me one scientific thing about intelligent design? -

how is saying that something is too complicated to be evolved science? -

even the name "intelligent design" precludes it from being anything a scientist could ...study?..write about...?/- I mean uhhh..

What exactly does an ID person study? huh?

what would a paper be about?- What is the subject?

the scientific community will stop at nothing to gag Intelligent Design

I think the ID community is imploding before your eyes.

The scientific community is gagging ID proponents by preventing their papers from being published?----?-that can't be what you're talking about can it?

I'm afraid I am going to go back to being one of DA-A-aa-Awkin's sheep

Comment #164427 by robotaholic on April 20, 2008 at 8:42 am

So, again, my point was: what has it to do with science? Why is Dawkins making this his life work -- instead of devoting himself to biological research?

Dawkins can do what he wants.

144. Gods and earthlings

Comment #164420 by robotaholic on April 20, 2008 at 8:35 am

moderationsmuse what kind of research should one do to investigate imaginary invisible beings with magic powers? - it seems like it's not researchable-

Why does a scientist spend all this energy trying persuade people to give up religion?
- because it's a lie and easily disprovable by it's very own tennents
Given that religious belief has been part of human culture since earliest times
so have parasites
Moreover, the few social experiments that attempted to politically irradicate religion turned out to be oppressive in the extreme (Soviets, Maoists).
*sighs* read Dawkins chapter about this - he has a chapter just for you- besides I wouldn't call the Soviet/Mao regime as a bastion of freethought and discourse as Harris would say
And why isn't he making scientific arguments for scientific claims?
read the book - besides it's your job to present the proofs since you are the one making the claims that a being with magic powers exists- don't try to shift the responsibility

145. Gods and earthlings

Comment #164411 by robotaholic on April 20, 2008 at 8:20 am

But God is immaterial
- and you know everything don't you. What evidence do you have that anything that exists is immaterial? - I declare you absolutely do not posess any-

ps (oh yeah Im a hardcore materialist and that whole debate has been going on for thousands of years lol)

146. Gods and earthlings

Comment #164409 by robotaholic on April 20, 2008 at 8:18 am

well if you consider cargo cults and other ppl "prone" to religion/faith - I can see a bunch of ppl who would think aliens with the tech to visit neighboring stars to be gods- So many people are ready to believe ANYTHING - and besides Dawkins didn't say that EVERY HUMAN ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH WILL ABSOLUTELY BELIEVE ALIENS WITH THE TECHNOLOGY TO VISIT NEIGHBORING STARS WILL BE WORSHIPPED AS GODS

So I think he's pretty much right. (as usual) :)

sounds like my dad Mitchell Gilks- he's closed to everything I talk about because he thinks it's a sinister plot to sneak in atheism somehow - no matter what scientific topic it is - i personally really cannot stand anyone who turns off at the sound of science- and I also think it's a shame and I don't understand that point of view either-

& Richard Dawkins - thanks and keep it up!-- I wish you would come through OKlahoma - plow right through, divide and conquor lol
