Comment #171201 by alovrin on April 28, 2008 at 11:11 am
The job is to promote or even outright provide the ideas that will advance the plan, given the state of affairs of humans at the time.
The bible is clearly an important book, if for no other reason that it has affected so many people's lives and ideas for so many centuries. It does not need to be perfect, self-consistent, and the answer to all questions. It just needs to be good enough to promote societal growth in a certain direction.
The old testament provided a model for an insular and cohesive society, based on some very harsh laws, that would produce a society that could weather the storms likely to occur naturally or perhaps be induced by an adversary to this plan.
The new testament provides a model for a society that cooperates while retaining some measure of individualism and a personal relationship between the believer and the godhead. This model may have been corrupted by vicars (root word same as vicarious) and by ignorant twits like Dicky here... but the basic message shines through the tarnish: Love God, love your neighbor, love yourself.
The fundamental meme was powerful enough to capture the western world against the odds of savage persecution, and by the time that it was corrupted and harnessed by existing power structures, the root concept was spread too widely and deeply to simply bury (even with centuries of avoiding the vernacular). You may see the renaissance and enlightenment as being movements that sprung up in spite of the bible; I would disagree. But even if they are merely reactions to the bible, then the job has been accomplished.
The universities that were set up to study the word of God were turned to the purpose of studying God's creation, and modern science was born. The Greeks (and to a lesser extent) the Romans that made a foundation for science prior to the advent of Christianity were an aberration, not robust against the hunger of the teeming masses and the constant churning of political power. Christianity became the first truly transnational institution, providing a robust platform for the birth of science that could not be squelched by political maneuvers.
And science is absolutely vital to God's plan (as I understand it), for reasons that should be obvious to you.

Some example of your gentle hypocrisy, the compartmentalising that takes place in the human mind when god is placed in a mental box all of his own.
I wish that more theists would consider the matter of the third alternative... But people get stuck in well worn ruts
Nor will I be moved by more gentle suggestions that what I experienced was all generated by my own mind.

OH MY Fucking Dog
Remnant you are fucking hilarious. I thought I was reading comedy, but the comedic value is in the fact that you and presumably others actually believe this stuff. Hope you dont mind if I just extract a few choice phrases just to highlight the hilarity.
In the pivotal event of societal evolution, beer was invented.
Neither the glass bottle or aluminum can had yet been invented, so it was necessary to stick pretty close to the brewery. That's how villages were formed.
Some men spent their days killing animals to barbecue at night while they were drinking beer. This was the beginning of the conservative movement.
Other men who were weaker and less skilled at hunting, learned how to live off conservatives by showing up for the BBQs every night and doing women's work like sewing, fetching and hair dressing. This was the beginning of the liberal movement. Later, some of the liberals actually became women.
Modern Liberals like imported beer.Conservatives drink domestic beer.
Conservatives have principles, believe in a Creator, and the rule of law. They practice charity and give to the poor, normally through their churches. When in doubt on an issue, they check both the Bible and the Constitution, which they use as a constant reference in a changing world. They believe in the concept of truth.
Liberals do not have principles, except for their dedication to stealing productivity of conservatives and undermining principled references such as the Bible and Constitution
Conservatives believe in self defense, both at home and abroad. They own guns and use them to discourage liberals and other common criminals. They provide guns to the armed forces to discourage foreign liberals and other foreign criminals.
Liberals do not believe in conservative self defense. They disarm conservatives, and then attack them with impunity by liberal armies with guns. King George, Hitler and Stalin were all liberals

I am using shorthand. Every time that God goes back He ceases to exist, at least in His prior form. But He is reinvented, hopefully sooner and better than before. He takes one for the team, again, and again, until the process is as refined as He dares to make it. He can't go from protoplasm to God in two years

135. Beware the Believers
Comment #152371 by alovrin on March 30, 2008 at 8:44 pm
Of course religion is more than truth claims. But it's the bogus truth claims that have to stop. The other stuff can go on.Did humans living, say, 300 years ago, create parodies of an enemy's parody? Perhaps not, or not often. One hundred years ago, people sat at desks and wrote letters in long hand by candle light. By the time you might lampoon your enemy's misrepresentation of you, weeks likely would have passed. Other interesting things would have happened. Anyone who might hear your response to some troubling response, would probably have lost the plot of the original disagreement.
Rapid, electronic communication and mass media have made possible reflection upon the meaning and significance of a dialog while it's in progress rather than afterward. I don't know how humans are being affected by this development, but I imagine it must be changing us in a profound way.
The postmodernist is fascinated by such recursive aspects of communication. I think everyone has seen how excessive textual deconstruction can lead to a frustrating sense of unreality. No matter how pretty the maps we make, the territory is where it's at.
Dr Benway again
Sheez Doc you come out with 'em sometimes I love it.
Oh yeah the song NNNN its OK. I can see why Richard didnt particularly like it. He realizes he's in the pubic eye and will get all manner or things come his way( so to speak). And he's most certainly allowed an opinion on it.
Nothing particularly appealing about flabby white torsos thrusting, bass looops kinda catchy but gets repetitive, I like a bridge.

Charles Simonyi's fine brief sounds as if it was written with Richard Dawkins in mind. How fortuitous it was indeed, given what has happened in recent years that such a suitable person occupied this chair.
I hope the person selected to replace Richard can further the cause of truth in their field as Richard has done in the field of evolutionary biology, and on into related fields.

Similar thoughts, as those expressed in this long winded article, occurred to me once or maybe it was three - four times.
I was at the time, at the very least drunk, which gave me an out - 'it seemed profound at the time' or (not that I actually let these words pass my lips 'you had to be there'.
But to see these idle thoughts (its what they are) presented in a kind of ??? apologist rhetorical flourish - in a ever so 'umble way of course.
Maybe g---d is " a glimpse so subtle........."

Comment #99473 by alovrin on December 16, 2007 at 6:10 pm
It is really hard to put one's self in such an artificial situation, as this obviously was and not end up sounding like a pratt.
These four did so 95% of the time (manage to not look like pratts).
95 - 97% of the time fantastic, not perfect, but who is?
Besides you know who.
Nice setting, could have edged the four away from camera a bit into the sunlight from the window so the contrast between Hitch/Harris in the FG and Dennett/ Dawkins BG wasnt so great. But nice use of the natural lighting, Hitch would have looked wicked with a bit of soft back light. And if the sun hurt Sam's eyes maybe a 1/2 or full stop net.
Anyway congrats to all involved and really good content
