Perhaps it's because there's too many atheists, or too many comments or the system has moved to a new database/language...

bilge242,

That may very well be the case, sad really, so much to appreciate through science, and these idiots want to leave it all up to their imaginary friend in the sky.

How do they rationalise using the internet, antibiotics, or advances in IVF - none of which are mentioned in their Bible? How can these scientific advances contradict the "Word of God" when this "God" never thought to mention them in the first place. Some God!?!?

Another rejected text, Biology for Christian Schools, declares on the first page that "if (scientific) conclusions contradict the Word of God, the conclusions are wrong"
Oh good grief - how do these people actually cope in the real world?

Deviation from such behaviour in in the west is only a recent development, not anything biological, but social and political.
Marcus, this is why Richard said, and has repeated this often, that he is not a fan of Social Darwinism.

It was biological, it was biological for small groups of kin, or community, it helped them survive - but in the "big, bad world" it is quite different. But altruism still exists today.

Read The Selfish Gene. If you've already read it, I suggest reading it again!

Dawkins jumped the shark in last night's episode.
Oh please! Leave the hyperbole to the hack TV critics!!

And this is what we discover: that the world is there for our benefit, and that there are all sorts of things that fit together for us.
Yeah, but how do catastrophic volcanic eruptions, massive earthquakes, tsunamis, meteor strikes, comet strikes, typhoons/hurricanes, tornadoes, flooding, ice ages, heat waves, wildfires, blizzards, solar flares, drought, and famine fit in with this "plan"?

If an almighty omnisicent being were to have "created" this planet Earth, why allow us to live on such malleable, and therefore unpredictable, tectonic plates?

Yet another case of cognitive dissonance and childish rationalisation by the ignorant fundies.

Idiots!

Hungarian,

I was watching "Who Wrote The Bible?" on Discovery over the weekend, they mentioned Tyndale and his exploits to allow the masses to read the bible, and also mentioned he was burnt at the stake for his troubles, but no word on why he was strangled first.

The thrust of my post, after watching that particular programme, religion is about control, even if there is some longterm benefit, the Church/Vatican/Imams want to keep it for themselves, the acolytes are merely pawns.

How they don't see this is beyond me.

Comment #227964 by Tyler Durden on August 11, 2008 at 5:11 am

What do you expect from a god who mixed up human language at the tower of babel in order to prevent people from communicating?
And when people like Tyndale and Wycliffe had the audacity to translate their "holy" book into English for the general population, they were butchered.

And this wasn't anything as revolutionary as Copernicus or Galileo - this was their own holy scripture, except the regular joes weren't allowed, or supposed, to understand it. Keep them ignorant, makes them easier to control.

"The Council of Constance declared Wycliffe (on 4 May 1415) a stiff-necked heretic and under the ban of the Church. It was decreed that his books be burned and his remains be exhumed. The latter did not happen till twelve years afterward, when at the command of Pope Martin V they were dug up, burned, and the ashes cast into the River Swift that flows through Lutterworth."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Wycliffe

"While a number of partial and complete Old English translations had been made from the seventh century onward, and Middle English translations particularly during the 14th century, Tyndale's was the first English translation to draw directly from Hebrew and Greek texts, and the first to take advantage of the new medium of print, which allowed for its wide distribution. In 1535 Tyndale was arrested, jailed in the castle of Vilvoorde outside Brussels for over a year, tried for heresy and then strangled and burnt at the stake."

It's not noble to think that you're polluted and weak, it's negative, pessimistic and just plain wrong. No wonder so many believers feel badly about themselves.
Quetz, very true - which is why the Church then "come to the rescue" by making these fools feel "better" about themselves for a very, very short while, before the whole vicous cycle repeats itself.

"You're going to Hell, You're going to Hell, You're going to Hell - but if you do what we say, you can be saved from eternal damnation!"

It's almost akin to mental and physical torture endured by children, or in some cases, prisoners of war. If you tell a child he's stupid/worthless ten times a day, he'll believe it. Tell him he's stupid/worthless (or going to Hell) only once, he suddenly doesn't feel as bad, and somehow thinks you're doing him a favour/being kind.

Classic abusive behaviour, and the Church have been getting away with it for years.

Comment #224948 by Tyler Durden on August 6, 2008 at 3:46 am

And did you know these crackers have allegedly made it all the way to the moon?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buzz_Aldrin

"He received Communion on the surface of the moon, but kept his Communion a secret because of the lawsuit brought by Madalyn Murray O'Hair regarding the reading of Genesis on Apollo 8. Aldrin, a church elder, used a pastor's home Communion kit given to him by Dean Woodruff and recited words used by his pastor at Webster Presbyterian Church. He celebrated Communion alone, without his colleague Armstrong participating. Webster Presbyterian possesses the chalice used for communion on the moon, and commemorates the event annually on the Sunday closest to July 20th."

Sigh!

Just in case txpiper ignores my last post, I'll throw one more in for good measure (apologies if this has been asked before):

Did Noah have Kangaroos on the "Ark"? If so (and I'm guessing he did if they still exist on the Earth today, to keep the "flood myth" going a while longer), how did he get them from Australia to this "Ark" of his, as they are indiginous only to that particular continent.

And no, "magic" will not be accepted as an answer!!

172. Lying for Jesus?

Comment #223686 by Tyler Durden on August 3, 2008 at 6:52 am

I'm of the opinion that our friend txpiper is actually a masochist. Why else come here to be completely and absolutely humiliated day after day by the likes of Reverend Dark, Steve Zara, epeeist, fizhburn, and on more that one occassion, Scot Rafkin.

I guess the truth hurts - but then, txpiper seems to like it that way!!

And if you're still reading txpiper... the Lascaux cave paintings in Dordogne departement of France have been estimated to be 16,000 years old.

Man in black: No other object as been misidentified as a flying saucer more often than the planet Venus.
Roky Crikenson: Really?
Man in black: Even the former leader of your United States of America, James Earl Carter Jr., thought he saw a UFO once... But it's been proven he only saw the planet Venus.
Roky Crikenson: I'm a republican.
Man in black: Venus was at its peak brilliance last night. You probably thought you saw something up in the sky other than Venus, but I assure you, it was Venus.
Roky Crikenson: I know... What I saw.
Man in black: Your scientists have yet to discover how neural networks create self-consciousness, let alone how the human brain processes two-dimensional retinal images into the three-dimensional phenomenon known as perception. Yet you somehow brazenly declare seeing is believing? Mister Crikenson, your scientific illiteracy makes me shudder, and I wouldn't flaunt your ignorance by telling anyone that you saw anything last night other than the planet Venus, because if you do, you're a dead man.
Roky Crikenson: You... can't threaten me.
Man in black: I just did.
