Comment #54543 by konquererz on July 7, 2007 at 5:32 pm
This guy has been a christian so long that he no longer can conceive of life with out a meaning wrapped up in a super power god. He states that atheism is "a belief in pointlessness", once again showing that the religious hordes are simply not understanding what is being said. There is no belief involved. And they ignore the parts where atheists talk about our life having meaning for life's sake, for the love of experiencing the world around us, and learning.
Its the same old idea that if you don't have god, nothing means anything. I think that this is a sad, but true, representation of religion. They are deathly afraid of living in a world without a specific being higher than themselves to be "in charge". I think that idea terrifies them.
What further, they view this assault on faith for something worse than it is. They don't really know what faith is. After all, why is it so great to believe without the need for evidence or in spite of it?
And as a matter of fact, he doesn't realize that a great majority of people in this country actually do take the bible literally, don't believe in evolution, and believe jesus is coming back for christians. So his ignorance flames through as the out of touch christian. Out of touch with reality, and out of touch with his own christian base.

Very good critique! I too feel a bit sorry for Behe. I don't think I should, but it feels a bit like the disabled child desperately trying to do something but just can't figure a way around it. It seems like there is something blocking him from doing what he wants to do, admit that evolution and natural selection are a correct theory. He is forever trapped by his inability to let go of his literalism view of the bible, and thus give into facts and evidence. I too was once en captured that way, its not easy to break free, even in the face of evidence.

What an outrageous censorship attempt! I wonder if the dad ever realized his son was an atheist. Its sad when parents are so into making their kids like them, they don't realize they have already moved on. I was like that. Oh well, at least he struck a victory for knowledge seekers. I don't believe any book should be banned in school, save porno books obviously, and maybe comic books.

I have to agree with Bach, I just haven't seen a moderate Muslim. I see Muslims who don't loudly believe that these people are correct, but they mostly believe in what they are doing in principle. Their goals are the same, thats why they don't speak out against it, even if they don't think their methods are the best way. Islam, by Allah's command, is to be spread to the entire world. If nations don't submit, then they are supposed to spread it by sword. A moderate Muslim is one who doesn't take the Koran or the Hadith as literal. There are very few of those types of Muslims, and the ones that are face death. Islam has not evolved to the point of having passive non-literalist as a large group like Christianity does.
155. When is a bishop like a suicide bomber?
Comment #53779 by konquererz on July 3, 2007 at 5:39 am
Dr. Benway,
He was wrong because he condoned the death of innocence by justifying it through his god. Death of innocence is never okay or "good", and there is no evidence at all that any natural disaster was caused by god in any form. So unless he can prove his claim, he is wrong. No evidence means wrong assumption. But yes, all of the above that you asked. He is wrong about homosexuality, because there is not proof of god, and he is wrong about knowing the mind of god, because he couldn't possibly know the mind of god, how arrogant is that? And he doesn't hold a minority opinion, you would just like to think that, most if not all fundamentalists think like that and Pat Robertson and Billy Graham believe like that. So yes, he was wrong all over the place, he was the lead speaker at the wrong-a-palooza!
156. Floods are judgment on society, say bishops
Comment #53641 by konquererz on July 2, 2007 at 11:34 am
What ever happened to the "lord" promising not to destroy the earth with a flood again? A flood truly destroys parts of the earth and kills people every where it goes, so did religious quacks forget that stuff?
This wacko just blames everything thats bad in the world on gays. Thats awesome, what about blasphemy of god? "God is a homosexual" or blasphemy of the holy spirit? "If the holy spirit existed, he would be gods lover" or cursing Jesus? "Jesus Phuck that bitchup is wack!"
By the way, in Indiana, we had wonderful rain last week and my new grass is growing great! Its supposed to be wonderful sunshine this next week. And our neighbor two doors down is a flaming homosexual! We should have been destroyed with flood, but we aren't!
BTW, every morning on my way to work, my gay neighbor greets me with a "fuck the lord neighbor" and I repeat the same. We love screwin with "gods head".
157. Scientist Build a 'Brain' From Rat Cells
Comment #53080 by konquererz on June 29, 2007 at 8:47 am
I think this is rather interesting. This goes along way towards showing that in order to "learn" to do something, you don't need a soul. If a brain can be taught to do something like fly a plane, something that requires what many pilots would consider "instinct" then how likely or needed would a soul or spirit be? Well, not likely, and not needed, which put the entire idea of ANY type of life after death a moot point. Of course to me and you it already is, but many people believe in something after death even if not a fundy christian heaven and hell thing.

CJ22,
Don't you know your theological nonsense at all? Its obvious to any good fundy that SATAN PLANTED THOSE SEEDS!!!!! They were placed there for the soul reason of damaging our faith!
HA HA, just kidding. You make an excellent point, the evidence is such that young earth believers give themselves over to delusions of the mind in order to continue their "comfy" place in life in which ultimately it doesn't matter what we do to this earth, Jesus will come back and fix it any way.
But on the article, its amazing to find out that our civilization may have started much earlier than we thought. We have come so far, I can't even image what it would be like without my computer!

Comment #52685 by konquererz on June 27, 2007 at 6:18 pm
I love the thought and idea behind the argument, but it causes some major problems for atheists. We have been saying over and over that we don't BELIEVE anything. But this will be clipped all to hell and used to say that its a belief, a religion, just like they said the whole time.
However, everything else he said is dead on. I love the way he puts things, the way he puts it bluntly and in your face. Brilliant as he always is in relaying the point.

I don't often agree with Mind Rebel, but I don't think he should have been bumped.
Any how, I have realized through experience that ridicule is the only thing that gets through to Christians. They can simply let "logic" and "reason" roll of their backs and keep believing. If you tell them that their faith is stupid and small minded and ignorant, then the battle is on! Then, you really get the chance to break down their arguments, which in turn breaks them down for a bit.

So many believe says something? The miracle of the birth will change some others mind? Are these people legally retarded? Hold people to their field, its bad science to analyze faith? This guys is an idiot, but he is right up the alley of most believers who will stand up and say "thats what I'm talking about!"
Every time I hear an apologist it makes me faint with the sheer lunacy of this all! What ever happened to "it takes faith, and I just have faith"? Now they come up with answers but none of them make a lick of sense.

Your assuming that only religion can bring hope, joy, optimism, and hope. So church came and gave them that, any number of other types of good will groups can do the same thing. Wouldn't it be nice to see people helping people just because they are human, not because some god told them to? Wouldn't it be nice to give hope to people without the baggage of having to live like a christian so you don't burn in hell forever?

Comment #52152 by konquererz on June 26, 2007 at 11:10 am
The problem is that anyone can say they are changed and behave for a bit. But people don't really change. Most people don't do 180 degree turn around, they try and they fail. Many murderers and violent offenders find god in prison, and when they get out, they still go back to crime. This is just another front for W to throw his blatant disregard for the constitution of the United States in our faces and laugh because neither we the people, the congress, or the courts will do shit about it, or can't do shit about it! Its shameful and obscene for this to even be in a discussion, it shouldn't be an issue.
168. Germany imposes ban on Tom Cruise
Comment #52151 by konquererz on June 26, 2007 at 11:02 am
This is silly. If you believe that Scientology is a religion, then its really unfair to ban some movie production company because your star actor subscribes to it.
If you believe that Scientology is a fraud based "belief" created by a science fiction writer to see if he could make money off of it, then its fair to ban them. Its not okay to endorse and allow what you feel is complete fraud on the human race. Scientology provides no benefit and WAS created by a science fiction writer to see if he could get people to pay him money! Its a scheme that should be treated as such.

Its a dark time in America. Every time I hear that theres a change in the Zeitgeist, that people are starting to listen to reason, I read something like this. I makes me wonder, if there really is a change in the air, is it to late? Have we already traveled to far down the path to theocracy and tyranny to come back without a show of force? I wondered after last year how much damage Bush could do in a year and a half. I guess we are going to find out.
170. The Present Threat of the Religious Right to Our Modern Freedoms
Comment #51847 by konquererz on June 25, 2007 at 10:26 am
Unfortunately, things never "seem" as bad as they really are. Often times, when nothing is done about small things, it paves the way for really bad things to happen. Its the cumulation of small victories by the Christian right that should show the true threat as it stands. There are groups who are pushing for a theocracy, I have met them and know them and they aren't playing around. Its about time that we as atheists, freethinkers, and skeptics stand up and stop giving them anything. Don't give them an inch because the Christian right will take more than a mile in return. These people are dead set on turning us to a theocracy, shouldn't be be dead set against them? We atheists really need to stop messing around and get out and campaign for our rights and the future of our country.
171. Evolution IS a Blind Watchmaker
Comment #51842 by konquererz on June 25, 2007 at 10:06 am
Steve,
I appreciate your putting forth your best argument on this subject. But you represent what has happened and what will always happen in these types of arguments. You already pinned it, this video won't change the minds of ID'rs and Creationists. Well of course it won't.
These types of videos are for people who are looking for knowledge and basic understanding of evolution. People who can bring themselves to believe in a literal interpretation of genesis and can be happy with a theory of our beginning that simply feeds on unknown parts of the existing theory are never going to be convinced.
The problem is they have a strong baseless faith that allows people who believe that way to ignore any and all fact no matter how its put. I know all to many believers that will never change their mind no matter how much evidence they see. They will continue to buy into obviously ridiculous theories and ideas as long as their believed reality doesn't change.

If it was my daughter or wife in the same situations, I would be telling that doctor that he/she had better treat me or get someone who can, else I will find a doctor that will and tell the insurance company to refuse pay!

I just finished reading this book. I like to read both sides of an argument.
Jesus Christ! This is a sad book. Its the same theistic arguments over and over and over repeated ad nauseum until I want to commit suicide to stop hearing the same ridiculous excuses for believe in god!
Every single time they say "arguments thoroughly refuted" its all a marketing lie! Most arguments in these types of books just completely bypass any and all logic, its like they live in a cartoon! I'm going to have to calm down now so I don't go burn this book because that would be to good for it. I'll just carve it into a bible book mark for myself!

I to wore a school uniform in a christian school growing up. I dispised it then and I dispise it now. But there is a huge difference between you being forced to wear a uniform at school and you being told to wear a suit and tie at work. Children don't chose what school to go to. You can always switch jobs, not work, work for yourself, whatever. You still have the choice to be where you are in life. Children have that decided for them, and cloths are often the first place they start exhibiting their independence and expression of self. Not much left for a child to learn to make decisions on if their entire day is planned out for them through high school.

Just a side note about Exodus 21:22
IT DOES NOT SAY IF A WOMAN HAS A MISCARRIAGE!
In every translation that I can find outside of this one website, it says "if she gives birth prematurely" not "if she has a miscarriage". Its referring to whether or not the baby she has is killed or not by the ordeal. Here, read for yourselves, change the versions, whatever. The above quoted scripture is not quoted accurately.

Sorry, I have to disagree with the majority of those who posted. I happen to think that uniforms in general violate a child's freedom to express themselves, destroy individuality, and cause the loss of self image as one gets molded into the crowd. I support a child's right to express themselves and disavow that school district for imposing uniforms!
However, if it is a private school, then she doesn't have a real legal argument here. While I lend her my moral support for her wish to express the person she is, I.E. a sexually deprived teenager, then I think she should. Suppressing religion is not going to get it removed from society, it will encourage it. We are talking about a martyrs faith, and the school is making her a martyr and they love it.
If its a public school, then I am completely against the schools supposed right to enforce any school uniform at all. I am currently fighting our public school system over the enforcement of school uniforms.

Christopher Hitchens does do a wonderful job of pointing out all the evil parts of religion. Thats why I like him. However, I don't agree with him on many of his political points. I completely disagree with his insane view of the war on Iraq, and most of his other pseudo-conservative views. He is a unique bird, and having conservative views never hurt anyone. I myself think that its hard to be an atheist and hold conservative views since they have essentially been hijacked by the Christian right.

I am a bit skeptical about this. I would like to see the experiments in which this actually worked. But on the surface it appears to be a good deal. I don't know that I would fork over 800 dollars just yet until the verdict is out. But if it really works and white blood cells can really be used and regenerated after a long period of freeze, then I would think insurance companies would want to pay for this. It would save them tons of money in the long run if a patient gets a disease that kills their blood cells.
But if you want to know what the fundies will say. They will say that AIDS is a punishment from god and should not be interfered with by such artificial means. That is, after all, the argument about the girls getting the shot that prevents an std that could lead to cervical cancer. If theres no AIDS, then what to stop everyone from going around willy nilly have sex with anyone in any hole? Yes yes, I can hear it now, and I'm already pissed!

Comment #51256 by konquererz on June 22, 2007 at 5:40 am
Bill O'reilly should do us all a favor and shut the fuck up! Forever! "I think I won the debate with Richard Dawkins!". I will translate for those of you who don't know what this means in his mind.
"I talked louder and got the last word in with Richard Dawkins which means I won the debate. I also made sure it was very short so actual thoughtful answers were not possible, there for god created my dumb ass and god exists and genesis is true".
Next time anyone has a debate on the O'reilly factor, he should immediately just yell, as loud as he can, "SHUT THE FUCK UP BILL!!!!" then start saying god damn it and jesus christ all over the place to stun him into silence. Then they can talk.
Kirk Camera-devolutionist is just a tool. A "Timmay!" by any other name still sounds just as stupid.

Blueollie, I completely agree and was going to write the same thing. Manning fails completely in this analogy to include and remember that the inquisition wasn't about changing peoples mind, and giving them information to make a free decision, it involved killing for not believing! Subtle difference but I think most of us will see it.
As well, since when is it dogma because I don't believe in something I can't see, hear, feel, taste, or touch? There is at least as much evidence of the Christian god as there is for every other god out there in every religion. Nuff said!

Wow, this nearly brought tears to my eyes! This type of courage is unheard of in the world today. These are freethinking people making the choice to stand up for what they believe. Not because if they die they will get some reward, they won't. Not for fame and glory, more likely a fatwa or what ever will be placed on them. Not out of arrogance, because most won't think they are better. They are doing it TRULY out of the courage of their convictions. A.C. hit it dead on, these people are true hero's.

184. U.S. circumcision rate drops
Comment #50640 by konquererz on June 19, 2007 at 7:26 am
Women are just not used to seeing an uncircumcised penis. Once they get used to it, they will be fine as long as your son washes himself properly.
Circumcision, though now trying to establish medical reasoning, exists solely on religious purpose. In America is was started as a big benefit to stop masturbation. But Judeo-Christianity pimps it out because its gods covenant with his children and Christians style themselves as his adopted people after the Jews killed Christ.
I circumcised both of my sons and dedicated them at church soon after. It wasn't until I dumped my faith (not lost, I'm not looking for it) that I understood that it was a load of crap. I later found that there was no conclusive evidence for or against circumcision. In other words, its tradition with a thin coat of "its beneficial" painted on. Its crap and if I had it to do it over again, I wouldn't circumcise my boys!

I actually didn't think Hedges did that bad of a job. He did a fabulously job of putting torture into perspective, and in that point, I really agree with him and not Sam Harris. But Harris as usual put the plain painful truth of it out there. Religion is only as dangerous as its most dangerous link, fundamentalism. Good debate, worth taking the time to watch.
186. Atheists: stand up and be counted
Comment #50491 by konquererz on June 18, 2007 at 12:35 pm
I love the article, but the premise saddens me. I think it also points out the reason that atheists don't speak out more. We see what should be obvious. The atheist position shouldn't need to be defended. Its going to take a large portion of us realizing that religion must be stood up against, and our voices heard or we will get steam rolled.
Yes, we are in the right. And yes, atheism is the default position for every rational thinking person. But we aren't dealing with rational people. We are dealing with fundamentalists who believe first and ask questions never. In order to "break the spell" of religion, we will have to push, pull, fight, scratch, and bite until we can be looked at like every other free human being.
The attitude that Christians have in America towards atheists is down right criminal. Most Christians think we are a religion and have a solid set of beliefs. Beliefs in "not god" so to speak. I fight this tooth and nail no matter where I am, what forum I'm on, or what person I'm talking to. It must be so! Any other way will not lead to equality and acceptance of how we believe. And no other way will pry open the eyes of the blind.

Love the Stubborn Curmudgeon site, hilarious!
I have a comment about the list of reasons why people believe. I have to say that top reason is absolute. Thats why I believed. But then, why do people like me break away when they were seriously indoctrinated as a child. Take my case for instances:
1. "Saved" at 5 yrs
2. "spake in tongues" at 7 yrs (for those of you never religious, thats a little holy ghost razzle dazzle! Gooobly boobly goo! Crazy talk!)
3. Handed out "tracts" on the street at 8 yrs
4. Went to camp "jesus camp" every year until I was 16, this included your run of the mill repentance and re dedications to the great Hey!Seuss!
5. Rededicated my life and started "really" studying the bible at age 22
6. Dumped Christianity at age 24
7. Dumped god at age 25
8. Dumped being nice to religion at at 26
I got every single type of indoctrination you can have. My parents are still super evangelical fundamentalists. Vote for every republican, love bush and think he is doing great and that he is a man of god, you name it. Yet, I still found a way to break free. So what makes a person shed the chains he was born into and become free?

However, he once again showed brilliance in his ability to cower his opponents with his knowledge and understanding of Christianity and indeed the bible. Its a very long interview, but I still got the sentiment of Roberts trying to buddy buddy with Hitch so they could "team up" against extremism. He still missed the point about religion and fell back on the same old crap.

This is the PERFECT example of how "well intention" religious morality is still harmful. Ignorance is always able to harm someone some how. Now, religious morality stands opposed to a group that has done, verifiable, allot of good in the world today, more so than any church or child-molesting priest.
This type of crap is exactly why religion is dangerous and why Hitch, Dawkins, Harris, and Dennet are getting so much public face time. People are starting to get sick of this disgusting display of "morality". But its good that its getting exposed. Even the "moderate" religion heads end up backing sickening displays like this. That is why Harris is right, all religion is bad because it has the potential to be so horrible.

Please, I'm sure they failed to put in the quotes between Jefferson and Adams in which they take turns in different letters talking about how silly Christianity is! Our founding fathers quotes in public seem to be seriously different than their private quotes in letters to friends. It would seem that our founding fathers did the politician thing and "play the part" while really despising most of religion. This is spoken to by the laws they made, the quotes in private letters, and the friends they kept, especially the likes of Thomas Paine! To believe that our founding fathers truly wanted a theocracy is to be completely ignorant of American History, you must believe what ever you are told and ignore the most blatant of lies and stretch what little quotes they have and take smaller quotes out of context in order to believe that! When will Americans stop being so utterly stupid! We fall behind in Math and science then continue to support this ludicrous theology of the religious right, and no one in the country seems to care! ARRRRGGGG!
Pant! Pant! Calm down K, you care. And this video is just another assault on logic, reason, and history that has to be dealt with by all of us. Stunning article. Simply, easy to understand, and devastating in its critique of Micheal Behe as a person, and as a "scientist". I'm keeping this one!

I love watching the Hitch interview. He never pulls punches, never gets too excited, never seems out of control. He really does have a way of slapping you and making you say thank you for it! I haven't read his book yet, I'm behind with so many good ones out there, but I really want to read his soon.

everybody who's weary of having to again explain what the word 'theory' means in science, just raise your hands.
I say, who the hell doesn't have 'any' doubt regarding the theory.
Choose your words more carefully….. Lest you be labeled a bona fide moron.
