151. The Four Horsemen: on Christmas

Comment #102837 by Matt7895 on December 23, 2007 at 6:10 pm

I just think we're struggling to understand how you are 'disgusted' by it. It's only two men, or two women, doing the same things a man and a woman would do together. They don't do it to annoy you or anybody else... their purpose of doing it isn't to disgust anybody, you won't find two gay men having sex in the street...

Live and let live is what I say, to harmless consensual acts.

Comment #102828 by Matt7895 on December 23, 2007 at 5:52 pm

Hitchens spoke out against homophobia in a recent Q&A session. I do not have the exact quotation but the gist of what he said was this. "Why does it affect you so much? Why do you care? Does it really keep you awake at night, thinking about what two consenting adults get up to in their own homes?"

I'd definitely agree with that. I'm quite happily straight, and I don't understand how a man can find another man attractive but not a woman. But that is because my brain is not wired that way. One of my friends, who happens to be gay, is wired that way, and I like him very much as a person and I respect his choice of lifestyle. It doesn't hurt anyone. So why hold a bias against him? You don't have to participate in his activities, or even agree with them. I certainly don't. But I don't consider them disgusting or morally wrong. If you do you're stepping into the whole 'God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve' argument, and that makes you a deluded theist.

153. Taking children for a ride

Comment #102825 by Matt7895 on December 23, 2007 at 5:43 pm

The charity believes that to save our society, we need to tell youngsters the story of Genesis. Apparently, this is just the moral guidance young people have been lacking. Will this therefore entail the interactive telling of the story of Noah, and how God decided to drown the world? Will it go a step further and interpret the floods that hit the UK last summer or more recently Bangladesh, or, as one Presbyterian church minister said, the tsunami just three years ago this month, as punishment from God?

To correct the wrongs of society, perhaps the theme park - using its multimedia to maximum effect - will tell the story of how Lot was prepared to give up his daughters to the Sodomites and eventually slept with them himself? Is it appropriate moral guidance to show how Abraham was going to kill his son because God ordered him to? Will it also tell the story of Cain killing his brother Abel? How will tales of rape, incest, infanticide, fratricide and mass homicide become the antidote to binge drinking and a society that watches too much sex and violence on television? Theologians would say they are not meant to be taken literally but how are they meant to be taken? Are these the kind of family models we want "our youth" to look up to?

I like this journalist simply from those two paragraphs.

154. Huckabee Stands by Christmas Campaign Ad

Comment #102823 by Matt7895 on December 23, 2007 at 5:42 pm

"You can find Santa at every mall. You can find discounts in every store," Huckabee said from the pulpit of Cornerstone Church. "But if you mention the name of Jesus, as I found out recently, it upsets the whole world. Forgive me, but I thought that was the point of the whole day."

Oh, poor baby! Do you want your dummy to suck? No, I'm not going to give it to you. I'll just leave you to tire yourself out. Go on, cry some more. I don't care. Cry, Christian, cry.

155. 'Christian God is not to blame'

Comment #102822 by Matt7895 on December 23, 2007 at 5:40 pm

These people sicken me.

Indeed. I don't even listen when they start spouting the usual 'STALIN HITLER MAO ATHEISTS LOL' argument. It's been discredited so many times before, these idiots just don't listen. So why should I bother with them?

They are ignorant, bigoted and close-minded.

156. 2 fleas for the Christmas week

Comment #102820 by Matt7895 on December 23, 2007 at 5:36 pm

Though in all seriousness does anyone even buy these books? Has anyone in this forum EVER seen these in the shops? Or anywhere but here?

In the bookshops where I live (Borders, Waterstones, WHSmith) the only flea books I have ever seen have been those by Alistair McGrath. They are always outnumbered by Dawkins, Dennett, Harris and Hitchens, who are in turn outnumbered by the numerous versions of the Bible, Qu'ran and Kabbalah :(

157. 2 fleas for the Christmas week

Comment #102785 by Matt7895 on December 23, 2007 at 4:27 pm

You know what? This guy can fuck off. I'm serious. I'm sick about reading about this same old shit week after week; Fleas and parasites having a free ride off books by intelligent people such as Professor Dawkins, Professor Dennett and Sam Harris, who's works are really quite educational and thought-provoking. It's incredibly irritating and quite offensive to the reasonable mind that these charlatans can seek to plagiarise atheist works time and time again with the same straw men and illogical arguments.

It might be the 4 pints I've drank tonight talking, I don't know. But I doubt I'll feel any different about the matter in the morning.

158. Blair converts to Catholicism

Comment #102513 by Matt7895 on December 23, 2007 at 4:20 am

Thing is, it isn't funny - this wierdo made a decision which directly led to the agonising deaths of many people, and reportedly did so (at least in part) with reference to Christian dogma and his pathetic belief in an invisible super-being.

I'm pretty sure Winston Churchill did the same thing back in September 1939. Does that make him a barbarian?

159. Blair converts to Catholicism

Comment #102429 by Matt7895 on December 22, 2007 at 6:14 pm

It's all so silly.

He swapped one ridiculous faith for an even more ridiculous one.

I would have though he'd have DEconverted if he was to make any religious decision at all... not keep the same God but with a few different rules to follow!

160. Survey finds most Americans believe Jesus born of virgin

Comment #102338 by Matt7895 on December 22, 2007 at 12:05 pm

except for atheists and agnostics, of whom just 15 percent took the virgin birth story as historically true

Sorry for the swear, but that's bullshit.

It's like saying 15% of atheists believe Mohammed was the sacred prophet of Allah, or Moses was spoken to by Yahweh through a burning bush. You're not an atheist if you believe such nonsense - you are a THEIST.

161. 'Atheistic fundamentalism' fears

Nice letter Flibble, unfortunately I doubt he will read it, or if he does he probably won't take in its meaning.

162. 'Atheistic fundamentalism' fears

Comment #102269 by Matt7895 on December 22, 2007 at 8:11 am

I was mulling over this and came to this simple realisation: Christians had a good run at dominating other people, crushing all dissent, and now their power is waning they don't like it!

They must miss the days when all they needed to do to stop opposition was accuse someone of witchcraft, then burn them. But now their work is cut out, they know they don't last in rational, scientific debate. All they can do is whinge, moan and lie. Quite pathetic, really. And amusing.

163. 'Atheistic fundamentalism' fears

Comment #102247 by Matt7895 on December 22, 2007 at 7:32 am

"All of this is what I would call the new "fundamentalism" of our age. It allows no room for disagreement, for doubt, for debate, for discussion.

"It leads to the language of expulsion and exclusivity, of extremism and polarisation, and the claim that because God is on our side, he is not on yours."

This guy loves his thesaurus doesn't he?

I don't see how atheism can be fundamentalist by his definition... since we atheists don't believe god is on ANY side, let alone ours. As for stifling debate and discussion... atheists base their non-beliefs on scientific evidence, which is always open to debate and discussion.

164. Good God! A politician who doesn't believe...

1. Comment #101902 by Rtambree on December 21, 2007 at 6:02 am

There are times one almost wishes there was a God, just so He could punish the evil done in His name, and by His followers, because warmongers such as Cheney, Rumsfeld and Blair only seem to get rewarded here on Earth.

Sigh....

166. Clegg 'does not believe in God'

Comment #100771 by Matt7895 on December 19, 2007 at 10:06 am

I was glad to see he doesn't believe in God.

However he seems to be 'an atheist but'. Having enormous respect for people of faith, bringing his kids up as Catholics... it's a shame.

Comment #100443 by Matt7895 on December 18, 2007 at 3:57 pm

Dan Barker was awesome in that debate, an excellent speaker. To me he draws parallels with Sam Harris in how eloquently and succinctly he can speak. I'd love to see either of those two take on D'Souza.

168. Interview with Richard Dawkins: On Christmas

Comment #100317 by Matt7895 on December 18, 2007 at 1:46 pm

Another nice example of RD getting 'snippy' with fatuous interviewers.

I don't think Jeremy was being fatuous... out of all the presenters and journalists there are on the BBC, he's hardly one of the worst.

I think he was playing devil's advocate rather well here, whereas in the other interview the CBC interviewer went above and beyond that position, actually being aggressive and dismissing in his questions to Richard.

BTW how long before Kirk Cameron and Ray Comfort come out as gay lovers? You KNOW its going to happen.

Even if they did, to most reasonable people these days (and I hope most atheists), it wouldn't be a dent on their characters. What I hope would be considerably bigger dents would be their advocacy of creation and their unwavering faith in an imaginary, celestial dictator.

Heh, Richard gave him a right bollocking when the interview said that. Just look at his face. Go, Richard!

176. CBC News: Sunday - Richard Dawkins

Comment #100079 by Matt7895 on December 18, 2007 at 8:12 am

'BBC documentary'?

Channel 4 more like.

The guy screwed up in the pre-interview, and then in the interview himself he went beyond just playing devil's advocate... he was actually openly aggressive and dismissive.... at one point I thought he was going to turn into Dinesh D'Souza.

Richard held his own as always, I nearly cheered when he defiantly said 'Which we are' in response to the 'if we are evolved apes' question. But I could see him getting very annoyed by the end, and rightly so. The interviewer was a moron.

177. Dawkins: I'm a cultural Christian

Comment #99794 by Matt7895 on December 17, 2007 at 2:47 pm

You can hardly blame them. The probability that Santa Claus is right now up in his North Pole workshop gathering presents for all the children of the world, is about as likely as Jesus Christ sitting up in heaven looking down on us all. Of course, most people grow out of the Santa Claus myth.

178. Dawkins: I'm a cultural Christian

Comment #99738 by Matt7895 on December 17, 2007 at 1:10 pm

I'm a cultural Christian too. I'm pretty damn proud of my country's history, and not in a tribalistic or jingostic fashion. It just fascinates me.

I like Christmas, though it really depends how you define it. I like to define it as a special time of year where my family can meet up, share gifts and have fun. That is why it is special for me. And I like singing carols because they remind me it. I certainly don't celebrate it as Christ's birthday, and I don't really think you have to these days... as others have said, Christmas is more pagan than Christian (indeed, the Puritans banned it), you don't need to have an imaginary friend to recognise its importance in British culture.

179. Creationists plan British theme park

Better yet, report that school IMMEDIATELY to Ofsted here:

http://www.ofsted.gov.uk/

It is prohibited to teach intelligent design/creationism in British schools, and I'm sure Ofsted and the DfES will be very interested to know one primary school has decided to play against the rules.

180. Creationists plan British theme park

Comment #99331 by Matt7895 on December 16, 2007 at 10:28 am

Even andy McIntosh has let it be known he "dreams" of creating a theme park near Birmingham airport.

Then he's an even bigger fool that I originally thought! I happen to live near Birmingham Airport. The land around here is VERY well protected, it is part of the 'Meriden Gap', a green belt that cannot be built on. The airport itself has had trouble getting permission for a new runway. I highly doubt a Creationist's chances at building a theme park here.

181. Creationists plan British theme park

Comment #99296 by Matt7895 on December 16, 2007 at 9:19 am

Northern Bright has hit the nail on the head. There is simply no call for this kind of thing in the UK. Creationism does not have a foothold here, and society itself is mostly secular with very few fundamentalists or evangelicals.

This theme park will fail.

Comment #99260 by Matt7895 on December 16, 2007 at 6:14 am

That article a few posts above almost made me scream in anguish until I forced myself to remember that fundamentalist Christianity does not have a grip on the UK like it has on America. Creationism will not gain a foothold here. That theme park will fail.

183. THE FOUR HORSEMEN - Available Now on DVD!

Comment #99157 by Matt7895 on December 15, 2007 at 7:13 pm

Funny how you "supporters" have re-written history. If you'll look back without a zealot's eyes, you'll see that we weren't told we were going in to "remove a brutal dictator." We were told that they were CERTAIN that he had WMD's (remember the popularizing of that term most of us had never heard before then?), and that he had acquired "significant quantities" of nuclear material to make weapons. Did we forget that, or are we just too stubborn to admit when we're wrong? Hmmmm???...

Re-read what I said again. The reasons Hitchens ALWAYS gives for his support of the Iraq war, whenever he is asked about it, is always the same: to remove a brutal dictator from power. In my post I talked of Hitchens' reasons for supporting the war, which happen to be the same as mine. I did NOT talk about the government's positions on WMDs.

Comment #99054 by Matt7895 on December 15, 2007 at 11:17 am

I'm surprised so many people here and on YouTube don't like Hitchens' position on Iraq. He supported the Iraq war to remove a brutal dictator from power in one of the most turbulent regions in the world. I know a lot of people who supported the Iraq war too. I supported it myself. I'm just not a fan of what has gone on AFTER the war. That's what I'm against - the Coalition's behaviour since Saddam fell.

materialistic philosophy of atheism — in which Marx, Stalin, and Hitler believed, when here it actually makes sense. They weren't merely indifferent to religion. They, like you, wanted to stamp it out.

Marx: Not an evil dictator, just a philosopher/political writer, who's writings psychopaths later hijacked in the early 20th century.

Stalin: Probably was an atheist, but installed a huge cult of personality which built statues of him in every city across the USSR, put a portrait of him in every home, and introduced miracles of agriculture, mining and industrialisation which all came as a result of his own form of Communism. He didn't want to stamp out religion - he merely replaced Orthodoxism with his own cult.

Hitler: Roman Catholic. Hated the Jews for many things, one of which being the death of Christ. Spoke about Christ and God in his speeches. Hated atheists. Did his deeds in his own bizarre mythological Aryanism. Signed concordats and deals with the Catholic church, his birthday was celebrated every year. His henchmen were Catholics too, Himmler had 'Gott Mitt Uns' printed on the belts of the SS, Goering was only excommunicated after the Vatican learned he had married a Protestant, not because of his deeds elsewhere. The Nazi regime had the backing of the Vatican and many Nazis held strong religious beliefs.

the evil actions of a tiny percentage of atheists who have, in your opinion, acted in a way that poorly represents your belief system

Atheism becomes a belief system when bald becomes a hair colour, black becomes white and the cure becomes a disease.

But its not them that are the problem really as they are only a niche and minority group. Christians, like this Tory MP, have started to speak up recently about their perceived persecution by the politically correct brigade to try to appease other religions like Islam.
