When I got home today, there was a flyer from the jehovah's witnesses stuck in the door - for the first time in my life I was sorry I'd missed them.

Maybe we should all sail to a new world where we can practice out lack of faith without persecution...

First thing you need to do is get an extra large darwinfish welded to the back of your car. Make sure it's welded and not glued otherwise it will come off when the 4x4 pickup with the stars and bars plate up front rams you.

Isn't that the sad truth? Even here in the blue, blue northeast, I have atheist friends who are terrified to put anything atheist on their cars lest they be vandalized. Paranoid? I'm not sure.

Edit: And yet I never ram cars with "Human life - more important than human choice" (there goes fighting for freedom) - I want to, but I don't.

What we need is a solution to the problem of how such recalcitrant minds can be changed.

Short of some sort of equipment that looks like a colander with a lot of wires going into it ... it doesn't seem likely.

My lesbian housemate told me that lesbians must be God's favourite people because they don't do sodomy and wouldn't practise birth control or have abortion.

Yeah, but what about the requirement that the "saved" may not have "defiled themselves" with women?

Don't want to sound like a republican, but somebody's spending money on this? And if they are, shouldn't some of that money be coming here to posters on RD.net who are proving it every day?

Then when he's in office and promoting peace, responsibility, and rationality, at least some will feel the bite of another nail in the coffin of Christianity.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Oh, oh, phew, sorry. You were serious?

These people are soooo whacked, having made up their minds already, Obama could do everything Mother Theresa did and STILL be the anti-christ. The actual Jesus could appear and tell them he's in favor of gay marriage and they would dismiss it as a liberal hoax. In other words, sorry, nothing will change their minds.

Nice thought though.

I guess none of these people will, if Obama wins by a landslide, say "Well, I reckon it was the lord's will, so I'm going to accept it and support it." Will god have made a mistake? Or, as is more likely, will they interpret it a a victory for satan (who would then be more powerful than god, who is, of course, all powerful)?

Seems like nothing sways the majority of American voters. Least of all reason or rationality. Four years ago, every American I knew, had met or even briefly talked to was against George W. Bush. And yet, there he still is ruining the planet for all of us.

Actually, fear sways them. I have neighbors who were going to vote for Obama before Russia invaded Georgia, and then decided it would be too "risky." But that was before Sarah Palin and she's scarier than anything, so who knows?

Talking to a friend today - it's all visceral. People vote based on their most visceral classist, racist feelings. They just "pretty" up those feelings with whatever verbiage they can glean from pundits, trying to put some veneer of rationality on their "gut" reactions to the candidates.

Edit: Okay maybe a LITTLE cynical.

As Richard Dawkins has explained many times, evolution DEscribes how things came about, it does not PREscribe how things SHOULD be.

And just to add to the thread, I went to a local sushi place last week where the chef's choice (omakase) came arranged on a pile of pelletized ice covering a blue LED ice cube with a little bowl of dry ice and water lending a misty aura to the whole eerily glowing presentation. It was a little over the top. But the fish was good.

And here's a cocktail for the techno-geeks (and I use that term in the most worshipping way ;-))

Purple Haze Cocktail
Adapted from “The Hungry Scientist Handbook” by Patrick Buckley and Lily Binns (Collins Living, 2008)

Time: 2 minutes

About 2 cups food-grade dry ice chips

4 ounces gin

1 ounce crème de violette (violet liqueur) or crème de cassis

1 ounce lemon juice.

1. Place 8 to 10 chips dry ice in large martini shaker or other container. Add remaining ingredients. As soon as you do so, the mixture will start bubbling and spewing out gas. Cover loosely, and stir or swirl to chill through, at least 30 seconds. (Do not make container airtight.)

2. Strain into martini glass, add one small chip dry ice, and let bubble until completely dissolved. Serve.

Yield: 2 cocktails.

Note: Do not handle dry ice with bare hands; use spoon or tongs. Do not mix dry ice with regular ice. Do not put dry ice in mouth or touch with lips. Dry ice is available via distributors on dryiceinfo.com or at Chinatown Ice Cream Factory.

Edit: Is this helping the 10K drive? I could go on.
