2001. For sale: 13-year-old virgin

If there is not God, Henri Bergson is right...

So you religious types need the threat of punishment to keep your lusts and immorality in check?
Hmmm...religion - something to calm the perverts...makes sense.

I was basically good without God for over thirty years.

I am now basically good with God.

I don't know any serious person (Christian or otherwise) that would assert that one cannot be good without God.

Kardy, you were you without God (or at least, his voice in your head). You are you with God (at least, etc, etc).
What changed in between? A voice in your head. The god you describe could, in the wrong (or right) circumstances get you killed if others think you a blasphemer.
You haven't told me if you take all your knowledge of Jesus from the gospels...given that paul might have spun them a bit and all...

As for all the religious people coming here saying you pray for people like me - do something a bit more useful. Give to your communities actively. Travel a bit. Help the needy. Get off your smug arses (or knees) and stop telling me you're praying for me. I don't need it. If I do need it, I'm sure I'll be more grateful for something a bit more here and now and constructive. Save your money, don't over extend your credit, drive less, eat less, exercise more, cycle when you think you want to drive.
Just stop wasting time in prayer.

It's been my experience (for 50 years), that people who behave like you did (in your article), do so because they're deeply afraid of Jesus.

But...
God loves you dude!

So why should we be afraid, Jesus being God as well as his son and all?
Does this also cover other religions?
50 wasted years - sad.

Neolithic cave paintings are a work of God? Methinks the big G as not even born when they were daubed on the walls in an inaccessible part of a cave.
Opinions, all it is. Read the Guardian's gushing praise of Bob Mugabe when Ian Smith's Rhodesia passed into the history books. They are singing from a different hymn sheet now...

Comment #160389 by Goldy on April 14, 2008 at 2:56 am

Kardy, somehow my questions don't feel answered to me. I'm still "hungry"!
And then you come out with the "Jesus did..." and "Jesus said..."
How do you know? You already said that the Pauline spin is there and apparent. Seems Jesus' own family were written out of the whole Christianity story after his death. How can you then say, hand on heart, that what Jesus is meant to have said and done is correct and true?

Edit - like here

Jesus was quite clear on this, as portrayed in the gospels

I particularly liked your use of the word "portrayed". It is just a portrayal - the artist definitely had an agenda, a picture he wanted to portray. We know the influence Paul had on the gospels and on what the early Christian cultists had to read and to think, which sources he approved of and which he didn't. We can gather he was a regular Benny Hinn character, what with his sailing around the Med telling people everywhere what Jesus was meant to have said and, more importantly, what Jesus was meant to have meant.
C'mon, dude (if I may use your expression) - we're all above all that literalist stuff here. You talk to the big G, to the Father (who is also the Son....damn, bit like that 60 Minutes program I just watched about incestual families in a way). We know God, according to you, has a plan, seems we can gather he can bend the laws of Nature (virgin birth NOT resulting in a female - that's pretty damn good going. Wonder who the Y chromosome donor was...) and, more importantly, of man. Shit, he can't even do that nowadays - all those honour killings and stuff are done in his name, with seemingly his approval (he loves a sacrifice really. He doesn't have to say it in a booming voice coming out of the heavens, he tells people like you what he wants - the rest of us just listen and blindly accept because...well, it's God talking through you. What makes you different from that priest or imam who live their lives for God?).
It's so self apparent I see even Bonzai said it
God cannot possibly be the answer to where morality comes from because God never talks to us, we only hear from humans who claim to know what God wants but they all disagree with each other, sometimes violently. They cannot even agree on how to interpret their own "holy books"(that leads one to wonder if God might have needed a course in good communication)

Trust me, I hadn't even got as far as reading Bonzai's comment. Like Wallace to Darwin, I am to Bonzai - an independent source.

Oh and how can you know God wasn't talkig to Jim Jones when he told every one to drink the Kool-aide?
God did tell Abraham to kill Isaac.
And many other human sacrifices occur in the book to placate God or protect his servants.

I know you don't think that the bible is a work of literal truth, you do think it is a worthy way to apply God's plan.

Kardy said
I simply see the Bible as being good enough for God to use it to accomplish His plan.

Maybe God does like the odd sacrifice. Maybe one day soon God'll be asking Kardy for a sacrifice or two as well...

Jim Jones actually began his life with Jesus on much more friendly footing. He was a powerful voice for Civil Rights

So was Charlton Heston. Just goes to show - you're only as good as your last job... :-)
I have to ask - what is it about Jesus and swine? Surely in Palestine there would not have been a great swiniculture, would there?

Goldy,
I actually read about this god in Dan Simmon's Hyperion Cantos! Funny you should say what you said.
:-) And you know, I have never heard of Dan Simmon or Hyperion Cantos.
Illustrates a point, though. I believe, Kardy, you once said God spoke to you of things you never knew about. Is this, then, God nudging me? Or are some ideas there and they just come out - sounding, at times, as other people's (or, indeed, divine beings') ideas?

2010. Lying for Jesus?

Comment #160262 by Goldy on April 13, 2008 at 9:13 pm

I think that the concept of an omnipotent, omniscient god is the minority view among theists, historically

Errr, you sure? As I recall he "is, was and evermore shall be". He is onmiscient and omnipotent - Rowan Atkinson used this knowledge to good effect (or was that Mel Smith? Probably Mel Smith) in some comedy sketch. God is eternal and he knows all - that's why we pray.
Hardly straw man arguments.
I'm merely accusing you of "Mysterianism" to prod your mind to think about how you have to put all this info so I can understand. It's hard - this IS God we're discussing, after all :-)

2011. Lying for Jesus?

Comment #160258 by Goldy on April 13, 2008 at 9:09 pm

Perhaps you have forgotten my discussion of the mechanism of creation. God "made" Himself in the future. We are a part of that process. He needs us like you need your ancestors...

At the speed these things go, maybe don't edit replies (or at least label the edit if you feel the urge to) or they'll get lost.
So...God is us? Or the celestial breeder? God made himself in the future? So he's a concept - he made himself in his mind? We are just the process to get God-now to be God-then? Or are we God?

2012. Lying for Jesus?

Comment #160255 by Goldy on April 13, 2008 at 9:06 pm

Yah. I can think of only one way to summarize an ontology in just a few words: "It's all in my head."
It is, though, isn't it? There is no God, no gods, not anything. Just a voice in your head, some ideas that you may or may not have actively picked up in your life being personified.
The God you know is what you want this god to be - you've even made him understandable and more human.
My theory, anyway :-) You'll disagree. Everyone disagrees with me :-(

Comment #160253 by Goldy on April 13, 2008 at 9:02 pm

Uh oh. You may have been infected.

No, but my daughter is all stuffed and wheezy... ;-)
How infected? With or without faith? After all my comment makes sense, right? The Tooth Fairy is a magical being, giver of coins and taker of teeth. It is a bit of a downer when one finds out she is, in fact, your parents.
Same with God - or any other god. If God is revealed, it is no longer a god. Gods are some sort of mysterious unknowables, with strange and supernatural powers.
Your god doesn't appear to have this. Sounds more like some sort of inter-galactic space/time traveller needing to get things done using whatever resources are available. Hardly god-like, is he?

I am saying that I believe the day will come when there is no denying that God is real, and that there will be plenty of scientific evidence to back it up, in the form of His presence before you.

Scary thought, mind. If and when God does appear, he'll no longer be a god - merely a higher being. It is actually in God's interests to remain hidden.

I believe that God is quite active and that the creation is ongoing, thanks to us.

Again, you're making God do things through the medium of us - hardly freedom, is it?
Creation is on-going? Thanks to us? Why then a god?

2018. Lying for Jesus?

Comment #160232 by Goldy on April 13, 2008 at 8:40 pm

Our freedom is part of the plan. He cannot "just do it". He needs us to do it.

Why? He made us, apparently, so freedom is a moot point, is it not? He made us becasue he needed us. That's not freedom, at least, not the freedom I know.
Why can't God just do it?

Hey Kardy.
Lumping you with the other theists? Moi? Mais non, old boy! ;-)
One wee point

Evolution by natural selection has been on the wane for thousands of years (at least in species with which humans interact),...

This research suggests the opposite
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/06/26/science/26human.html?scp=51&sq=human evolution&st=nyt
We are not like our ancestors of even 1000 years ago (by the way, while looking for the above link, I found this for csrbm http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/18/science/18mora.html?_r=1&scp=33&sq=human evolution&st=nyt&oref=slogin)
Perhaps you've noticed that I have commented several times about my distaste for Paul, and my unwillingness to treat the canonical Bible as the single (literal) source for understanding Christianity.

I simply see the Bible as being good enough for God to use it to accomplish His plan.

How then can you understand Christianity? All we have are what has been allowed to filter down the ages to us. Unless you knew Jesus a bit better, all you know of Christianity is from Paul and his spin. You are then not a Christian, I take it. More a, well, a Kardashovellist :-)
How can the Bible be good enough for God to accomplish his plan? Why doesn't he just make it so - he is God, after all. Please explain. Simple words, skip the mystery, the "God works in mysterious ways", etc. If God has a plan, why not just do it?

Sorry, I'm not into many Austrian/German things.
Something in the water over there, I dunno, they had a propensity for militaristic cookie cutter robots in a row stuff long before it went too far and became Nazis.

Methinks you're confusing Austrians and Germans with Prussians. Never catch Bavarians or Austrians being so authoritative! A rather wide brush there, old boy (speaking as one with an Austrian mother). Read The Good Soldier Svejk - that's the Austrian of the militaristic pre-WWI period. He was Czech.
My turn to be a tad aggreived!

Why do you ask? You a racist bigot?
You looking for a disciple? ;-)
But yeah, I guess those piles of Armenian skulls turning to dust in the Syrian deserts are but...well, nothing. Just natural. I guess the sudden dearth of Jews after the war in middle Europe was just a consequence, that the trials and records found concerning the death of Jews and other undesireables a conspiracy theory.
You sound like an Arab - everything is a conspiracy.
My mother remember the Jews disappearing. She also very much remembers the local opinion of Jews. Somehow the two can't be related, can they...nah! Of course not. They just got deported to...ummm, well, where ever one had a camp of a few million people who, would you believe, no one can trace. And after having been at the receiving end of...how did you put it?
...pressed on all sides by advancing enemy armies, its cities reduced to rubble to a historically unprecedented scale, the population in hidding, in flight under devastating bombing, or being massacred, robbed and raped by invading armies, its hospitals crammed, its communication infrastructure in shambles, its road and railroad systems utterly disrupted and under attack from both high-altitude bombers and low-flying ground attack planes,...
it does seem odd that all the Austrians remained but all the Jews left.
Hey, maybe the Nazis were in contact with aliens! Yeah, that'd be it - all those millions of disappeared people (unlike the deported Germans, Tatars and other ethnic soviet minorities) are in fact in a distant planet...

I don't know what Hitler believed, but he certainly wasn't Christian. His actions were completely contrary to what Jesus teaches. You're not a Christian because you say you're a christian, or because you go to church for that matter. You're a christian if you believe in and obey Jesus' commands.

Ah, yes, the good old "That's not MY God!" argument. Trouble is, every person has his or her own interpretation of Jesus' command. Including Paul, who you slavishly follow now. How do you know you are following Jesus' teaching? After all, EVERYTHING you know about Jesus is what Paul said and I hear Jesus' own brother didn't agree with him.
How many gospels have you read? 4? That it? Just the Nicean gospels? And you know they are the right ones? The Muslims claim Jesus was a prophet of God and Mohammed was God's last prophet - how does that square into your argument? They wrong? If so, how do you know?

Odd really. One would have thought the deluded would be here to proselytise. Instead, they come with arguments to really make one turn away from their religion. Muslims don't do that...neither do hindus or Buddhists or animists.
Makes one assume the "Christians" coming here are anything but. They all, even the good David R, an evil coven, all delighting in the eventual burning in hell of us all. They shall, for their evil thoughts, burn in hell. What irony - rather delicious!
You know, DIO, whytebread et al, I am right, don't you? Deny all you will, your god will decide your fate on your actions. So far, they don;t stack up. What would Jesus say?
But, if you are now worried, don't be. Join us. There is not god, there is, indeed, no God :-) No Heaven nor Hell. We'll even give you the right books to show there is no Jesus, or if there was, Paul is who you follow anyway, so Jesus' teachings are but chaff in the wind (shit, I could tell that from reading the NT - how can you be so blind??) as far as Jesus was concerned.
If you do persist, give us something substantial, please! IDO, you are getting weaker and weaker. You are sounding more and more like a fart in the dales - we can't smell you for the wind. Now investigators say they have evidence of emotional, physical and sexual abuse of young children.

They also say they have evidence that there is a bed inside the sacred temple where young girls were forced to have sex with older men.

The ranch and compound are owned and run by the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Just so you know what the topic at hand was...
