I'm forced to ask myself, if I truly thought that atheism was a harm to the world, how would I behave?

What level of bad behavior would I be able to justify?

Would I, say, act an ass on an atheist message board?

Would I be a slimy, quote mining, misrepresenting, manipulative, smarmy, condescending, douchebag to atheists?

Would I write a shitty little book full of the same slimy smarm as my posts?

What would I do?

Well, it occurs to me, that if I truly thought souls were at stake, I would have to try to maximize the good I thought I could do.

So, I would try save as many souls as I could.
So, I'd have to go for the sure thing, and try to save as many christian souls as I could, because banging my head against the wall with atheists could end up being a dangerous waste of my time.

Now, IF I thought atheism was harmful, and IF I had persuaded myself it was okay to be an asshole for Jesus, I suppose to protect fellow christians from atheism, I guess I'd try to scare them away from it by trying to make atheism look as bad as I could.

But see, that's where being an asshole would have to be the vital ingredient.

Cuz see, I don't think I could exploit people that way.
To use people I thought were going to Hell as tools like that.
To interact with them like they were people, while simultaneously knowing they were going to fall into the pit of fire.
That would really get to me.
My conscience would be all sorts of fucked up.
I'd have trouble looking in the mirror each morning.

I suppose, to disconnect myself from my conscience, I'd have to dehumanize those people.
I'd have to see them like monsters in a video game.

And I suppose the way I'd have to do that, is swallow the whole Stalin hook good and deep.

Yeah, I guess I'd have less trouble being a slimy quote mining asshole to people if I mentally projected little Stalins and Satans onto them.

And hey, it's for Jesus!

And it's to save blue haired old ladies and sick little girls!

Who couldn't get behind that!?

Why, it's as pure as Superman!

Clean as a fucking whistle!

...EXCEPT...

To swallow all of that, I'd have to have the solipsism to assume I was the big important sheep herder of the flock who was called to do all this.

AND...

To swallow THAT, I'd've had to have swallowed hook line and sinker, the bronze age fairy tales my parents foisted onto me, and THEN gone on to waste my life on a career based around them.

..yeah, way too many hurdles to jump over.

I always asked too many questions to not see them coming up the road.

I just can't get inside David's head, and see it his way.
It's like a whole other planet, one with sulfuric acid for air.
I can't even go their with a spacesuit.

"in a universe of blind physical forces and genetic replication, some people are going to get hurt, other people are going to get lucky, and you won't find any rhyme or reason to it, nor any justice. The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil and no good, nothing but blind pitiless indifference' Richard Dawkins The Blind Watchmaker.

You cited that quote in your bonehead video, and your deliberate and almost salivating misunderstanding of it grated at me then too.

He means the UNIVERSE doesn't care.
WE do.

Good and evil come from us.

Nope.

Hmm...none I can think of.

Who else in any profession wouldn't want the best tools?

Sure, there's the "using steroids is like being normal in the special olympics", argument, but that's only if you see athleticism as some fort of sacred field of honor, or some crap.

Another leap of faith: God does not exist.

No faith needed at all.

I'll believe if evidence presents itself.
None has.

And extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

God is an extraordinary claim.

Warm and fuzzy feelings when you see a shaft of sunlight piercing a big pretty cloud is not extraordinary evidence.

And theological logic pretzling isn't extraordinary evidence either.

Not only isn't their evidence for any sort of God, but biology, geology, archeology, history, and just plain logic annihilate the Gods of every revealed doctrinal book-based religion right out of the gate.

The best you could argue for is a non-interventionist Deist God.

And there's no evidence for him either.

The only evidence there ever was for the Deist God was the argument from design.

And Darwin destroyed that argument.

Simply to say that creationism is not science is not saying much at all. Why isn't it science?

Because science posits a theory, tests it, and if the data doesn't support it, it either refines the theory and tests again, or abandons the theory, and comes up with another.

Creationism has a theory, one it'll never let go of even in the face of evidence, that of its mythology based creator god, and arranges and distorts the evidence to support it.

It's just pseudo-science babble made up as a debate wedge by the creationism side.

Once you concede micro-evolution, you've taken on the whole thing.

When you get a shitload of microevolutions, you end up with macroevolution.

Bible obscurantism and theologians is a non sequitur....

Um, I'm afraid not, and your evolution analogy doesn't track.

Evolution isn't an alternative God.
It's an explanation of natural processes.

The Bible is allegedly the word of an infallible God.

If the bible is an obscurantist mess, then either God is fallible, and therefore not God, or humans seriously fucked the Bible up, which is as bad as having no word of God at all.
And then God never saw fit to correct the problem, which would also make him fallible.

I watched that pathetic Youtube video of David Robertson talking about The God Delusion, and The Dawkins Letters again, and I chuckled at the part where he says it "scared him".

Of course, he goes on to ramble that "calling religion a virus", could lead to Stalinist/Nazi purges, and blah, blah, eyeroll, yawn...

I'll tell you what you're really afraid of, David.

A world where no one validates your bullshit anymore.

A world where you're all alone in the night, having tea parties with your imaginary friend all by yourself.

A world where you can't shore up your pathetic self esteem by salving people's emotional wounds with the ointment of false promises.

A world where the jig is up for your racket, and you have to get a real job in the service industry somewhere.

A world where no one considers you special.

A world where to be special, you have to rely on real talent, and intellect, and imagination, and personality, and not that you found a sweet load of suckers to shovel superstition to.

That's what scares you.

Well, I'm not here to be a nice guy, and cushion and alleviate that fear.
Sup on that fear, buddy.
Drink it down your little gullet.
Cold on ice.

Because, the reason these atheist books are selling so well, why so much anti-religion sentiment is buzzing about in the zeitgeist, is the same reason why the two party system is in shambles.

These social institutions you cling to?

THEY'RE NO LONGER RELEVANT!!!!!!!!

They're not.
Sorry.

People are fed up.
It's time for a new philosophy.
It's time to hit the reset button.

And it's our fucking right to hit the reset button, because we're the children of starstuff, and quite possibly the highest order of intelligence in the universe.
We are the universe examining itself.
We can shift gears any time we want.

And hopefully we are.
Hopefully, we've evolved as a society where we can abandon childhood superstition, and go to the next step.

And don't worry, there will be no purges, no concentration camps, no cafe bombings.

It'll just be you, shivering under your bed, afraid that's what's going to happen, and wanting people to join you under there, waiting for Jesus to smote vengeance.

And while you quake in your hidey hole, we'll just be leaving you behind.

Alone.
With your obsolete beliefs.
Behind the evolution bell curve.

Not exterminated, not segregated, just irrelevant.

Where you deserved to be in the first place.
Not because of any nazi shit about your genes, but because of choices you deliberately made as a grown man to exploit the ignorant and afraid.
Yes, you should be afraid of that.
Suck that fear down.
It's yours.
You earned it.
Own it.
Bye.
