In Alberta, I was the only commuter in Red Deer on a bike, as far as I could tell. Odd because the cycle lanes were fairly extensive (well, going to the city and the parks, not to where I worked).

I think the future of personal transport os a dying concept - unless someone thinks of something else and guarded interests allow it to develop.

The seed of at least a partial solution is contained in your post. Chicago is a pretty bicycle-friendly city, and tolerance for bikes in traffic is generally on the increase. Of course, there are issues, but they seem to be amenable to resolution. I get in to my job from home (about 50 miles) by a combination of folding bicycle and heavy rail. No gas, no traffic or parking headaches, a little cardio twice a day!

What needs to happen is for SUV's and other gas guzzlers to become unfashionable...when driving a hybrid is a sign of status, then U.S. consumers will change their ways.

This doesn't help the "working poor", who often can only afford older, fuel-inefficient cars. Of course, you are right about the status-conscious upper crust.

my knowledge on this is limited, but couldn't it be passed on to offspring in the form of the genetic template for immune systems that, for instance, produced higher levels of "basic antibodies"?

Hey, you're the deity! I'm just your lowly servant endodontist. But I *did* sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last... well, not last night, but in the last couple years!

I believe the "genetic template" you mentioned would be the result of a mutation; it would subsequently be selected for if the prevalence of the new disease were high enough. Increased levels of antibodies, per se, are not reflected in the genome AFAIK. This is, as an example, why our kids need MMR vaccine even though we may have had those diseases.

I still worship you. Tea Time.

In any event, evolution still occurs at the genetic level, the most obvious example being the adaptation of the immune system to new diseases.

I think a better example would be the development of antibiotic resistance in some species of bacteria.

Actively acquired immunity is not necessarily passed on to offspring, as far as I know. The *ability* of the immune system to recognize and respond to new diseases may be under some genetic control; at least it seems likely, but I will defer to those with more specific knowledge.

Of _course_ it's based on the word of the living god. What did you expect- they don't like Karl Landsteiner? ;-)

If memory serves, the biblical proscription on blood is a dietary thing. The sandy authors of the scriptures used by the jojoba's witnesses to justify refusing blood could not in their wildest fantasies (and they have some pretty wild ones) have thought that blood could be exchanged between humans to save lives. Which makes it all the more retarded: they could refuse to drink/eat blood, but still receive it by transfusion. I know what Irate would say.

It is nice to find a forum where people don't have to argue constantly about their view, knowing their view will not change no matter what the other person has to say.

You will find that folks on this site will require evidence of a fairly substantial nature before any mind-changing occurs.
I have a good feeling most of you have never read the entire Bible, let alone studied it. That is something I would say I AM pretty intelligent about, the Bible.

Be very careful with your claimed bible-wielding skills. There are people on this forum who have vast, encyclopedic and in at least one case seminary-acquired knowledge of this document and others. Quoting the bible generally is not effective, as you will probably see.
The universe and the galaxy amaze me, and every new scientific fact that I learn reveals even more the very nature of God.

Well, I see you have been gently taken to task on this already. Good luck.
Hell is a very real place, and the worst part about Hell is that it is the complete absence of God, which is something no man has ever experienced, because we have always been in His presence since He created the earth.

Oh, please. I experience the absence of god every day, and it hasn't hurt me. No, I'm not interested in any threats of post-mortem lac du flambeaux.
I don't claim to have all the answers, but with as much diginity as He can give me, I will respect any and all questions and queries and try to answer them with the knowledge He has given me.
This may be a good test for your faith, if that's what you're after. If your particular invisible friend is up to this challenge, I expect you will have all of us joining the heavenly choir. Or maybe not.
Best regards,

Remnant was commenting on atheists picking apart words. I'm wondering if he sees words as fixed objects.

I'm surprised Irate hasn't picked apart this one yet:
"F-U-C-T-A-R-D". :-)

Isn't Reverend Dark's avatar a dog looking out a window?

Don't you think he's looking after his lost manhood? Maybe contemplating a comb-over to compensate.

Gal 6:7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
O! Dear. That DOES scare me! Maybe I should take Pascal up on his wager...

Interesting that the threatened "divine retribution" either happens *after* death, where they ain't no witnesses, or is mediated by *others* claiming to be doing his magnifananamous's dirty work. This god fellow really covers his tracks. Clever.

{Edit} On the other hand, every so often Thor himself nails a golfer with a lightning bolt. That's what I call "evidence"!

Right, I am going to give out the mane of the High School on the internet. What are you a predator?

Well, that's a very sensible answer, for a change. However, you tipped us off to the school anyway:
Horse Rustler Memorial High School, in Bumfuck, Montana. :-)

Better to suggest to the webmaster that the posting software be updated to provide better HTML or WYSIWYG capabilities.

There used to be a "preview" function. Whatever happened to that, Josh?

Only God can soften that hardened heart of yours and lead you to salvation.

Maybe the great cardiologist in the sky can soften at least my coronary arteries. That may not lead to salvation, but not having a MI would be a bonus.

"Our finite minds cannot possibly comprehend the entirety of God's plan."

Ah, yes... the "escape" clause. Useful in any tight situation.

God is just in that he will give us what we choose. End of story.

I'm sorry, but that is just so much bullshit. Let me see. My mother, daughter of a presbyterian clergyman, died of colon cancer. I forgot- she chose that. BTW, her father apparently chose to develop Parkinson's disease and die after losing control of his wheel chair and riding down a flight of stairs. My mom's brother-in-law, a clergyman himself, was struck in the eye by an errant golf ball and lost most of his sight. I forgot- he chose that too. Someone had his almighty eye on the fucking sparrow, and not somewhere it might have done some good.

On the other hand, I've been godless since I was a teenager, at least. My life is wonderful. I've been married to a wonderful woman for almost 26 years, have 2 successful non-believing children, a successful career. You bet your heavenly father I chose all that, but god had fuck-all to do with it.

You keep gassing away about your fantasy all you want. If you can't answer the specific questions posed by the reasonable people here, you won't get much better than you've gotten so far. I have utter contempt for people like you who basically just make it up as you go along, spreading your seed (in this case, on remarkably infertile soil) and generally getting off on yourself.
