Robertson wrote quote me:

Kaiserkriss

There is little doubt in my mind if DR were a Muslim, he'd be one of the Mullahs advocating violence to the infidel.

I think this post is sadly too typical of the kind of argument many use here (by the way Richard does this count as ad hominem?). You have no evidence that I would be advocating violence and yet you have 'little doubt' in your mind. In dealing with such certainties I know that most people on here will struggle with the concept that I have anything worthwhile to say (because there is little room for doubt in your minds) but I write (not to wind you guys up), but in the hope that there are others who are less certain and who are prepared to listen as well as abuse. As in Richard's following post "You seriously expect us to believe that you have any doubts? Have you read any of his previous posts? And in spite of that, you only "suspect"? I'm sorry - I don't believe you."

I see you rose to the bait. Learn to read buddy.
I wrote "There is no doubt in my mind IF DR were a Muslim etc" Do you not understand what the word IF means?? To the best of my knowledge you are not a Muslim, so what I wrote is strictly a supposition, yet you choose to view it as a potential ad hominem. GOTCHA!

This is very much the same tactic YOU use to insult people many times over in your posts to this board.
DR as far as you are concerned, even though I have never met you, and have to judge you strictly by your written word, I feel sorry for you as a member of planet Earth. There is nothing you can say that would change my mind, or hurt my feelings, EVER, since in my (implicitly) closed mind you have lost complete credibility.

That is something I cannot say about my many Christian and Muslim friends, that show none of the fanaticism you display over and over again. jcw

Steve said: "This is someone who can and will make use of responses to him. Who knows, some angry attack on him may turn up in some sermon on "the immorality of atheism". He is a distinctly middlebrow thinker on matters of science, philosophy and theology, but he knows what he is doing here, and I have a sad feeling we have given him just what he wanted"

No skin off my nose I say rather selfishly. There is little doubt in my mind if DR were a Muslim, he'd be one of the Mullahs advocating violence to the infidel. I'm probably jaded, but I just can't take this guy seriously anymore, and it speaks volumes of were we stand as a civilization when such individuals have a following of any sort.jcw

Steve Zara: I agree with you, however Richard Dawkins (in lieu of the administration)has given his okey-dokey on this one, so I think since, the site carries his name, his opinion should carry some weight.

As far as Paula is concerned, unfortunately she will take the brunt of the fleas probably unfounded critique, so her opinion should also carry more weight that yours, mine or all the other individuals who have voiced their opinion.

Personally, and I don't wish to offend you Steve, the fact that you have been debating and posting since the early 90ies etc. is irrelevant to this argument.

Maybe I just can't take the flea seriously enough to recognize the potential harm his inane arguments will do. I do find his tactics annoying, as much as the next person, however, I don't let it get to me.. "Consider the source". jcw

We can all have opinions, but the bottom line is, if rd.net will be willing to put up with the small parasite, as implied by Richard D, and Paula has the graciousness to put up with the flea's put downs, the decision should be hers alone. jcw

Arguments and questions that are inconvenient to Robertson are simply ignore by him as you have found out, as have I in the past. This technique is classic "bull shitting" used by very many people who get in over their heads, and quite common among individuals engaged in public speaking such as politicians and preachers.

To WEAFLEA: Please present your arguments without ad hominems, address your arguments with the issues in Paula's tome, without personal attacks. If you are indeed a christian then don't stoop to personal attacks and provocative language, and act like the christian you profess to be. jcw

I must be in the minority here, when I try to learn from individuals like the flea to counter their arguments with acquaintances in the "real" world.

Mitchell Gilks:

You make a couple of valid points about the lack of time available to the average person working and raising a family etc. HOWEVER trusting so called experts with extremely diverse opinions could be regarded as gullible. Which one do YOU believe, without a little knowledge about the subject yourself to help you make up your mind??

Education is a bunch of small steps. What people like Ms Jacoby are trying to do is to get the general public to take a few MORE small steps, expand their minds rather than being denied the opportunity by closed minded "know it alls".

As for the time aspect: Instead of spending 3 hours in church on Sunday, every evening at the ball park, football club, nascar race, etc etc, IF there is indeed the wish to learn, then the time CAN be found. Just a matter of priorities.

Instead of being satisfied with the lowest common denominator of the general public being at 1 we should strive to bring it up to 5, one step at a time... jcw

It would seem prudent in light of these happenings, each and every person enlisted in the military, and especially potential officers should be forced to attend a four week course on civil rights, and in this case the US constitution.

223. Charles Simonyi Professorship in the Public Understanding of Science

Comment #125579 by kaiserkriss on February 11, 2008 at 4:09 pm

While I personally, together with everyone else on this site will truly miss Richard's outstanding work in the Public understanding of Science, I can look forward to new books, lectures and arguments from him. Dammed age discrimination!!

Hoverer as others have suggested, I would support a nomination of Bill Bryson, since Bill speaks and writes at the level of the average individual with an IQ of 100. No offense to Richard and the other Scientists, but if we want to get Science to be understood by the PUBLIC, we have to speak at their level, not the level of academia, who despite their best intentions and abilities write at an academic level probably only understood by a relatively small percentage of the population.

Another thought, why not a non English/ American Aussie, kiwi, canuck speaking individual?

Many well qualified communicators and scientists whose first language is not necessary English are suitably qualified for such a post. One that comes to mind is Michael Schmidt-Salomon. Here we have a young communicator, well versed in English, with a degree in Philosophy.

Despite Richards excellent footwork, it is my opinion an ideal replacement at this stage of human development should be a communicator, someone who is comfortable bringing science to the masses in an understandable and fun way which is exactly what Bryson and Schmidt-Salomon do so well. jcw

Professor RICHARD:

While I would dearly love to read "Son of TGD" or "Richard's flea powder", I think books aimed at 5-10 year old children would at this time be more important.

There is so much christian literature floating around for children of all ages, in many cases based on the bible, but as far as I know nothing in the English language aimed at the children of Atheist parents.

Children need something written at their level of comprehension to counteract the many misunderstandings and out right lies spread by their playmates, often resulting in ostracizing for not following the heard mentality.

Something along the lines of Michael Schmidt-Salmon's book "Wo bitte geht's zu Gott fragte das kleine Ferkel" would be a great start to show English reading children there is more to the world than the traditional religions.jcw

It's about high time such ancient violations of basic human rights (blasphemy) gets taken off the books everywhere, together with the literally thousands of other outdated pieces of legislation than are still on the books and rule our world today. Hope it passes in the UK and shows the way to the rest of the world.

Along the same lines, is it still illegal to call the reigning monarch a prick?

My proposal: for every new law that gets enacted, one of the outdated ones should be taken off the books. Is it any wonder, even lawyers have to hire "expert" lawyers to defend them? What is the average person with an IQ of 100 supposed to do.

AJ.. Didn't mean to put words in your mouth, and I apologize for misunderstanding you.

I would agree with you that a more principled politician would be more acceptable one to me than one who becomes a vote chaser. However, because of the dynamics and complexity of many issues, no one, not even our elected leaders have perfect knowledge of a situation at any given time. Anyone claiming such knowledge immediately has alarm bells going off inside of me as being poor leadership material and an egocentric.

In politics there has to be a bit of pragmatism rather than standing ones ground strictly on principle despite the evidence saying otherwise.

I'm not going to get involved in the Iraq debate except to say it is a perfect example of standing up for ones principles with imperfect knowledge and being bull headed about it afterwards.

It would seem people equate a "flip flop" with weakness, when in fact it can show immense courage. jcw

236. What have you changed your mind about? Why?

Comment #105726 by kaiserkriss on January 1, 2008 at 4:59 pm

AtheistJon: I personally would disagree with your original premise that politicians have to live and fall by their current perception of an issue. We live in a dynamic world, and nothing is more dynamic than politics.

While it is admirable to stand on principle, your hypothesis suggests always having perfect knowledge, something that does not exist in the political world, or the real world for that matter.

One of the most popular leaders of the Province of Alberta for example, was a populist known as Ralph Klein, a remarkably ordinary man. However he had the insight to recognize that admitting one was sometimes wrong and showing some humility made him a "real person" rather than an obnoxious always right know it all. Because of this attitude, the average Joe and Jane gave him a lot of slack when he made mistakes by giving him and his party huge majorities during his time as leader of his party.

As I said previously, a little humility is a sign of maturity.jcw

237. What have you changed your mind about? Why?

Comment #105638 by kaiserkriss on January 1, 2008 at 11:21 am

Hmmm, so what IS wrong with changing one's mind? I would suggest many on this forum have had a change of heart regarding their religious beliefs.

In my opinion, being dogmatic about certain things is being close minded and egocentric. To have the courage to admit to ones shortcomings by not always having to be right shows maturity, wisdom and a little humility.

Surely these characteristics in a person are infinitely more desirable than those of a politician or for that matter any other individual, who keeps making more and more stupid statements, just so as not to loose face, and having to admit to making a mistake. We are human after all, excuse the pun, not gods.jcw

If anything his lifestyle through his affiliation with the catholic church fosters the propagation of myth, stupidity, ignorance, intolerance, as well as excusing pedophiles for their actions.

My personal philosophy is more libertarian: You can do whatever you like as long as it does not interfere with the rights of others, and that goes for lifestyle as well.

Even though Theo seems to have been a bit of a bigot, murdering him for his views and a movie is UNACCEPTABLE IN CIVILIZED SOCIETY.

I'm quite sure people who take offence to this movie, don't realize they are similarly offending other belief systems by taken such a violent and intolerant stance.

The respect of others the "religion of peace" these fascists supposedly espouse is in direct contradiction to their actions. The mullahs spreading this hatred are the Stalins and Hitlers of today.

Thanks AllanW. Getting a reasonable world view these days through the press is difficult, which is why I personally check out online editions from different countries in different languages for other perspectives of the same issues.

You would be amazed how a particular set of events is portrayed to dissimilar audiences, not only within a country, but also to other members of the same language, English often being the language of choice.

Now add in another language, in my case German, and the same story takes on another twist. The hidden agendas of the owners of the press are quite astonishing in pushing their views onto an uncritical public.

Be that as it may, since Newspapers live by their popularity, it says very little of the inquisive nature of the average Joe or Jane, Hans or Hilda that they give the population exactly what they want. jcw

What IS one to think of the Brits at large when the popular press spews forth exactly what the public wants??

The rather childish ad hominem attacks on the "old nazi ratty" in many of the posts on this thread are an indication that despite rationality on this site, nothing really has changed in over 60 years. Judging by their jingoistic comments, many Brits are still living in the past, still believing every person of German background is a nazi, not realizing the world has moved on. Along those lines, I wonder if RW would still appreciate coral music if the texts were laced with satanic verses, or what he would refer to as blasphemy? Does RW like the music because of the religious overtones of the lyrics, or does he simply appreciate the music? Think of Coral music with "Black Sabbath" lyrics if you may..
