It's just, my day to day angst is I'd rather not be a writer than be a crappy writer, and I'd rather die than not be a writer at all, and thus I'm stuck tormenting myself into not sucking by always thinking I suck, so that's the boulder I'm always lifting, which is bad enough on its own.

But then a fucking Vox Day comes along and pukes on the floor in front of me, and makes me slip and almost drop the fucking boulder, y'know?

Hard to stay sane sometimes.

No, no, as bad as contempt for standards is, the really worst part is the lowering of them.

I busted my ass, and my brain, to within an inch of my life to get as smart and funny as I am, and I still suck compared to the standards of the writers I grew up admiring.
And by those standards, I'd rather have no writing career, and starve to death in the gutter, than bring harm to the world by not living up to them.

Better no new books than drivel, dammit!

It may lead me to ruin, but at least it was a destination I was driven towards that I failed to get to!

But by shitty fucking hacks lowering the standards, what does that teach kids who are up and coming?
It tells them the finish line is just two steps away, and they don't even need to run, much less train!
Don't even try, jack off on a sheet of paper, bam, there's your book, collect a check.

I could never live with that.
I'd put a gun in my mouth first.
It's indecent to every core value of my being.

But, we're getting a generation of kids who've come up on drivel, and they've gotten their standards from it.
A generation of drivel, and sloth, and cheat codes, and piracy, and mindless materialism.

They're going to give less of a fuck.

All ego, all money.
Nothing else.

The first time I heard that "true myth", BS was on a documentary contrasting C.S. Lewis, and Sigmund Freud as a launch point for a debate on religion "this was before the 4 horseman books hit".

Anyway, the "true myth", shit was from J.R.R. Tolkien to C.S. Lewis, and Lewis ate it up like it was actually a good argument.

I dig Lord Of The Rings, but it always disappointed me Tolkein passed along such shitty reasoning.

I had a sleep paralysis incident where it felt like my consciousness was centered in my face, which was lifting away from my body, floating towards my stereo, and "welcome to the machine", was playing as clearly as if my ears were hearing it.

Woke all the way up, was back in my body, the stereo wasn't on.

I suspect mild carbon monoxide poisoning, as the house was full of propane stink from the gas stove backing up.

Had the stove cleaned, haven't turned into a floating face ever since.
