Comment #204885 by BillySands on July 6, 2008 at 4:31 am

Clearmind, your analogy is trying to show that the universe has a creator. You are trying to show this by asking us to consider things we know to be designed, like houses or tables, then asking us to agree that the universe has been designed and therefore there must be a designer. But there is no reason to think the universe has been designed. There's no designer to be seen. No evidence of design.

You have to laugh haven't you. What muppet boy also fails to pick up on (as they all do) is that man made designs dont have children and pass on their mutations. I yhink he is beyond help. If I get his Da Vinci point, he is saying that it is his god because it just is and he does not need evidence, he just knows.

Ha Ha ha ha ha ha ha ad et infinitum...

given the opportunity, would anyone ordinarily choose to have a random genetic mutation induced in their unborn baby? Why in the world, then, do people ordinarily choose to believe that the exact same mechanism has built every beneficial feature of every bodily organ of every life form on earth?

I'm not going to reply directly to the fucktard, but this is beyond belief. I point and laugh at this twat!

As regards the question of why the article was posted here perhaps you can enlighten me? Maybe there is a burning interest in Dundee on RD net or just maybe this was seen as another opportunity to remind the followers how Islam is stupid/evil and therefore all religion is stupid/evil?

So, you would rather hide this from the world the way you took offence at god hates the world http://richarddawkins.net/article,1326,God-Hates-the-World,Westboro-Baptist-Church#51894

Oh I get it, you want to lie and pretend that your religion is good and that these things dont go on in the nane of religion. You are not only lying to us, but to yourself as well!

If some of these fundies would only grow some balls and take the challenge, we could settle this. Isn't science so much better than goddidit at finding things out.

And as for clotting of blood....

Yeah, another place where ID gets trounced. Clotting factors are probably the products of gene duplications and mutation. The system is not even irreducibly complex as some species lack certain factors and their blood still clots

How like a creationist to choose the worst possible example to make his case!

Humans cant synthesise vitamin C. This is because we have lost the gene for L-gulonolactone oxidase.

It still exists as a non functional pseudogene though - a result of evolutionary heritage, so you were saying?

Yeah no different to the rest. When someone quotes Tacitus as a source on Jesus, he either has not read it or is not too bright.

Regarding the ontological argument, if god is described as perfect, then surely that is subjective, and the theist who believes that he can not understand the nature of god (Isaiah 55:9) is in no position to comment on what perfection would actually be. Would so called imperfection be able to recognise perfection?
We are supposedly imperfect as we were "created" with qualities lacking in so called perfection (eternal life and the knowledge of good and evil- Which brings us to the fall.......

OK, one last one before bed

The Bible is clear in its condemnations of homoeroticism. Those who claim otherwise are engaging in eisegesis, not exegesis, and they haven't a leg on which to stand.

Well, you missed the point: your relational god does relate very well.

Brian, if God was the father, then Jesus could not have been from the line of David...prophesy wrong...

Interesting thing about Davidis that his line should not give rise to Jesus. He has a Moabite ancestor(Ruth) and they may never enter the congregation of God. In fact, on reading this law, all people of mixed moabite ancestry were kicked out (Nehemiah 13:1-3)

Well, that depends on whether you think the bible says it is OK to be gay or not - and there is a weakness in your argument. Believers cant agree on what is the right way to do anything from how to worship to where to stick your penis and who to invade - and your god is supposedly a relational one!

Re: the Virgin Birth, we humans have been creating them in fertility clinics for, what, the last 30 years or so? Of course, Jesus had to get his Y chromosome from somewhere and Joseph seems like the most likely candidate.

Isaiah 7:14 is a classic shoehorning of jesus into a prophecy. If read in context, it is about a sign for Ahaz relevant to events around 720 BCE.

We also then have matt 1 vs luke 3 on who the father of joseph was (and a few other genealogical and legal problems - like the inclusion of a moabite)

Comment #201342 by BillySands on June 29, 2008 at 3:31 pm

Nope. 'Tangents' are common in Josephus as well as other ancient historians.

Care to give examples and demonstrate why they are not additions?

Antiquities 18:3

2. But Pilate undertook to bring a current of water to Jerusalem, and did it with the sacred money, and derived the origin of the stream from the distance of two hundred furlongs. However, the Jews (8) were not pleased with what had been done about this water; and many ten thousands of the people got together, and made a clamor against him, and insisted that he should leave off that design. Some of them also used reproaches, and abused the man, as crowds of such people usually do. So he habited a great number of his soldiers in their habit, who carried daggers under their garments, and sent them to a place where they might surround them. So he bid the Jews himself go away; but they boldly casting reproaches upon him, he gave the soldiers that signal which had been beforehand agreed on; who laid upon them much greater blows than Pilate had commanded them, and equally punished those that were tumultuous, and those that were not; nor did they spare them in the least: and since the people were unarmed, and were caught by men prepared for what they were about, there were a great number of them slain by this means, and others of them ran away wounded. And thus an end was put to this sedition.

3. Now there was about this time Jesus, a wise man, if it be lawful to call him a man; for he was a doer of wonderful works, a teacher of such men as receive the truth with pleasure. He drew over to him both many of the Jews and many of the Gentiles. He was [the] Christ. And when Pilate, at the suggestion of the principal men amongst us, had condemned him to the cross, (9) those that loved him at the first did not forsake him; for he appeared to them alive again the third day; (10) as the divine prophets had foretold these and ten thousand other wonderful things concerning him. And the tribe of Christians, so named from him, are not extinct at this day.

4. About the same time also another sad calamity put the Jews into disorder, and certain shameful practices happened about the temple of Isis that was at Rome. I will now first take notice of the wicked attempt about the temple of Isis, and will then give an account of the Jewish affairs.

2 and 4 fit together a lot better with out 3

Comment #201322 by BillySands on June 29, 2008 at 3:17 pm

Tacitus only mentions the existence of Christians and says where they got their name from. It does not corroborate the cannonical .

As pointed out, Josephus (writing after 90 CE) can not be trusted.
The arabic version is also widely believed to be a rough paraphrasing of Josephus derived from christian sources.
It says nothing of jesus as a miracle performed either. It just reports what his followers believed.

If you also read the passage in context, it seems to disrupt the flow of passages on either side of it.

If someone would alter a historical text, it makes you wonder what they did to the NT (which is full of shoe horned "prophecies")

Its probably another (s)hit and run by him, but he recently said that christians dont believe in indoctrination. How does he explain proverbs 22:6 "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
"

I wonder if Wee free sunday fundy school discusses whether jesus is the son of god, and whether that god actually exists. Or do they make them sing "yes jesus loves me because the bible tells me so" over and over and over again?

Come on David, we want to hear about the fall - it is something that could be tested and provide that elusive evidence of yours. Surely a genuine truth seeker would not be a lilly livered chicken about the issue.
What if we go to hell because you pushed us away from god - I dont think he would be too happy with you now.

It appears that Robertson is unable to grasp the fact that if we are evolved, this requires death and suffering. So to spell it out to him DEAD THINGS FOUND IN ROCKS OLDER THAN PEOPLE MEAN YOU ARE WRONG!

If he was advertising anything else, he would be in trouble.

who says? Given that the number of atheists is a minority of the population why should my tax go to pay for the indoctrination of children into secularism?

So, if for example a large group of christians were to say agree with an Austrian christian who hated jews for example (as many a good christian has), that would make it ok in your book then? 80 million Germans cant be wrong (especially the christians) eh?

Atheists actually make up over a 3rd of your country. The majority religion is the curch of scotland followed by the catholics (and your lot swear their leader is the antichrist) So you are actually in the minority. How many (not including sheep wearing wellie boots - as opposed to the 2 legged ones) does your particular church have?

Hey David, did you hear that Christian Robert Mugabe give the true christian position on gays last night? (oops, I forgot, you are a homophobe too) - Keep up the good work"!

I wonder if David would object to arguments against god being complsory parts of RE in schools - given his unbalanced world view and hatred of anyone that challenges him (and the fact he was not for giving islam an equal crack), I can guess the answer - well, he is a fundamentalist after all.

Care to comment on your idea about sin and natural disasters?

What's that? You dont because it would prove your ignorance beyond a shaddow of a doubt and show us how little regard you actually have for humanity - and you would rather carry on sniffing toilet seats instead?

You can now play the fake outrage card and pretend you have an answer but it is not worth giving us now - boo hooo!

To All

What do all atheists scream in the time of danger? Oh God please help me.

Why is this?

Really? I dont remember that when I was facing death or serious injury in a desperate winter climbing situation.

My partner asked if I was considering praying. My reply was "Am I bollocks!"

Then, you should read what Joe Simpson had to say. He broke his leg at over 20 000 feet and the recieved wisdom at that time was anyone that happened to was a dead man crawling. His partner did his best to get him down, but he ended up dangling over a crevasse and his partner cut the rope. He was left for dead but eventually he got himself back after several days.

This is what he had to say

"At 16, I asked all these monks some serious questions and they didn't come up with the answers, and I just decided I didn't believe in God. And I always thought, you know, if everything hit the fan, then I might turn around and say, you know, a couple of Hail Marys, "Can you get me out of here?" And in all those days, I never did once, not even in the crevasse. I never thought of some God or some omniscient being that'd lean down and give me help, and I feel, actually, if I had believed that, I just would've stopped and waited for it, and I would've died. And so in a way, that's why that loneliness, I think, came in. I was 25, I was fit, strong, ambitious. I wanted to climb the world and I was dying. There was no afterlife, there's no paradise, there's no heaven. It's just dead. And I really didn't want to lose that. I've got immense respect for other people's religions, be it Christian or Buddhist, Hindu or Muslim. I just…I don't happen to have a belief, and I've tested that atheism, so, um, I respect my own lack of belief now. Before, I was never quite sure."

I recommend his book "touching the void" It is the best thing I have read - totally pisses on the bible

Then you could actually do some research before wafting your generalised sweeping evangie bullshit towards us
