301. Anti-Quran Film Fitna Pulled From Web Due to 'Threats'

Comment #152716 by annabanana on March 31, 2008 at 11:56 am

Steve,

I think I am starting to run, not walk, towards Nairb's position.

Just because you don't agree with al-rawandi's position doesn't mean that you have to run towards Nairb's position. You may think al-rawandi's solutions to be harsh, but I think he is far more educated about the subject than Nairb seems to be which would lead me to listen to him a bit more than someone who seems somewhat ignorant of a lot of things that al-rawandi is not.

I certainly don't have the answer, but I don't think Nairb does either.

Nairb,

Can you please more clearly demonstrate why you think your approach is better than al-rawandi's?

Also, I would say that al-rawandi is likely more knowledgeable on the subject than you are (of course, I don't know this for sure) which gives him a large knowledge base for forming opinions on the matter.

It's ok, Steve. We all have our moments of indiscretion. ;-)

In fact, I'm sulking, because Anna Banana has been following my mind around, and saying rude, unbalanced, things.

Richard,

So when I said that your mind is constantly in the gutter, what should I have added that would have made it a balanced statement? I can't seem to imagine what would be the opposite of the gutter. The roof, perhaps?

Steve,

So what would he be wearing then....? Gosh, the mind boggles.

Oh my! The mental images you have just created. I assume then that you'll be taking responsibility for these since you once brought it to my attention that I was shamefully evading responsibility when I once did something similar?

Quetz,

That isn't going to help Al-Rawandi's pride, you know

Oh, it wouldn't be a bad thing that I was uncontrollably giggling...

Tyler,

I'll be sure to come and have a guinness. Of course, that means the evening may end with someone having to carry me home (or to my hotel, rather).

Of course, I might well be thrown out of the church for uncontrollable giggling. Then that indeed would be a waste of income.

Quetz,

I think we should call for balance by having an atheist speak at every one of David Robertson's church services. If that didn't happen, it would be as if people were just going there to hear him give only ONE side of the debate. And that would be wrong, of course.

You just made my morning. This is a splendid idea!

This is a surprising question coming from Richard Morgan whose mind is constantly in the gutter.

Comment #152540 by annabanana on March 31, 2008 at 7:57 am

One problem I would have with such a claim is that there isn't "the muslims" as I understand it.

My fault. I apologize for my clumsy wording. I suppose it was implied that "the muslims" she (and I) was speaking of were the ones who indeed intend to do harm and try and convert the world to Islam. I'm supposing that is their ultimate agenda, anyway.

Comment #152530 by annabanana on March 31, 2008 at 7:45 am

Steve,

That sounds like something to be taken into account, but it sounds rather too paranoid to be realistic, at least to a fuzzy liberal like me.

I saw Aayan Hirsi Ali on C-Span recently and she was speaking about exactly what al-rawandi was talking about. She was saying that the muslims are more sophisticated now in the way that they are trying to assimilate just so that they can more effectively infiltrate. I don't know if this discussion is anywhere on the web. Maybe someone else knows? I can't look at video at work, so I won't be much help in locating it.

First of all, is that even a practical solution to circumcision? Second, even if it is practical, it can't restore any sensitivity that may have been lost in the original procedure.

Steve,

However, if you paint all muslims as a threat

Do you think that this is what the video did? I'm not sure if that's what you're asserting, but if it is I don't think that's the case.

Incidentally, I wish that Wilders hadn't used music from the Nutcracker in that film. I'll never be able to watch Arabian again without images of marred corpses flashing through my mind.

Comment #151298 by annabanana on March 28, 2008 at 12:46 pm

Take away the sun and I guarantee there won't be any more global warming. I'm pretty sure everybody thinks the sun has much to do with it.

I don't think that is what Dr. Benway meant, Steve Mading. Of course there wouldn't be global warming without the sun, but most scientists attribute the failing of our atmospheric layers to anthropic causes and positive feedback loops. This particular scientist may be thinking that the sun is responsible for the failing of the atmosphere rather than the normally attributed burning of fossil fuels.

Comment #151256 by annabanana on March 28, 2008 at 10:37 am

On the subject of God creating flawed beings: I don't see a logical problem there. All he has to do is want to, and that flawed being is then a perfect expression of his will.

I think that depends on your definition of perfection which then creates another problem because different people have different definitions that they ascribe to perfection. So in which sense of the word is Yahweh perfect?

Ygern,

When they realise they are in danger of losing all their children, then maybe they will start to comprehend that they need to start using their brains responsibly if they wish to continue to be allowed the privilege of having children.

While I agree with most everything else that you said, I think this in particular, is wishful thinking. If they are tried in court they most likely will consider themselves martyrs. I think it's highly unlikely that they will come to their senses if having a daughter die didn't do it.

_J_,

Touche! I suppose I was taking too much stock in my memory of my Biblical religion course in college.

Ok, so if he didn't lie there, is there anywhere that you know of that he did lie?

I always found it strange that humans were supposedly made in the "image" of YHWH who is supposedly perfect, yet humans are not perfect? How can something that's perfect create and imperfect creation? Wouldn't being perfect also mean that anything you create is perfect? So maybe he was lying in saying that he is perfect, otherwise, humans would be perfect, too.

al-rawandi,

I must be a pedant for a moment, so you'll have to forgive me, but...you can't cure cancer. You can cure a specific type of cancer, but as cancer is a very general term that encompasses a lot of diseases that have different causes, it would be very unlikely that someone would ever find a "catch-all" type of cure. It would be much more prudent to say "Hopefully they cure lung cancer (or insert cancer of choice)".

Mark Smith,

YHWH lied in the NT to Adam and Eve. He told them he would kill them (or that they would die, can't remember exactly which at the moment) if they ate of the fruit of the tree of knowledge. I suppose they did die eventually...but they didn't die immediately like he made it sound, anyway.

Tyler,

If I had 10 guinnesses, you'd be taking me to a hospital. I'm a very wee person (but not wee like the wee flea). I can only have a couple. Not to mention, isn't the alcohol content higher in the guinness there? I met an Irish lady in a pub over here who said that women commonly drink half guinness half soda to dilute it a bit.

al-rawandi (and Quetz),

To put it in biology terms that are easily understandable to me, the US and China have a symbiotic relationship with one another?

Edit- Perhaps it is something like the termite and the bacteria that live in its digestive system that allows it to be able to digest wood. Without the bacteria, the termite would starve and vice versa.

al-rawandi,

Just found this on wiki:

In recent years, the debt has soared and inflation has stayed low in part because China has been willing to accumulate reserves denominated in U.S. Dollars. Currently, China holds over $1 trillion in dollar denominated assets (of which $330 billion are U.S. Treasury notes). In comparison, $1.4 trillion represents M1 or the "tight money supply" of U.S. Dollars which suggests that the value of the U.S. Dollar could change dramatically should China ever choose to divest itself of a large portion of those reserves.

Of course I don't know what the hell that means because I'm a biologist, but does that sort of sum up what you were saying earlier?

As for the US, I was under the distinct impression it is ALREADY owned by communist China in the form of all the Treasury bills they currently hold.

Something like that. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I am under the impression that the only reason they don't really and truly totally own us is because they import a fair amount of food from us.

Richard M, I think you're over generalizing. There are different sects of Mormonism that believe different things. The main group, for example, has given up polygamy, whereas there are still small sects that practice it (however illegally). Some of these sects are more modern and live in communities of huge mansions, while other of these sects live pretty much amish-style.
