Prof Reiss is simply saying that if a pupil comes out with the creationist line in a classroom there is nothing to be gained by shutting him/her up or ridiculing their beliefs.

Replace creationism with other things that aren't science, like drama club, or the latest music, and then consider how you'd handle kids derailing a class yammering about them in the corner.

That will only make them MORE hardline.

A disruptive kid becomes "more hardline", when asked to simmer down.
Do you let them take over, or do you kick their ass out?
