401. Terrorism That's Personal

I read this this morning. It so moved me that I'm donating to this cause (link to follow).

402. Children of God?

Comment #293692 by Caudimordax on November 29, 2008 at 7:30 pm

Children are probably "hardwired" to see "intent" and to extrapolate from there to a being with intent. Wouldn't it be nice if adults were there to gently explain that appearances aren't everything?

And where did this thread come from? It's not under "featured" or "latest news." Am I missing something?

The comfort level between Jews and Indians has allowed for a specific strain of self-mockery, too, which might be some psychic balm in this time of atrocity. As an imitation news story on the Web site SatireWire put it:

“Hinjew leaders today conceded the merger of Hinduism and Judaism has not worked out as planned, as instead of forming a super-religion to fight off the common Islamic enemy, they have instead created a race of 900 million people who, no matter how many times they are reincarnated, can never please their mothers.”

Comment #293524 by Caudimordax on November 29, 2008 at 7:12 am

We now know that blacks probably didn’t tip the balance for Proposition 8. Myth busted. However, the fact remains that a strikingly high percentage of blacks said they voted to ban same-sex marriage in California. Why?

Frankus - Brilliant posts!

I keep thinking (dangerous) and maybe somebody has addressed this? The whole "making a special effort to go vote for gay rights" thing - has there EVER been a referendum on gay rights that wasn't on the same ballot as the general election? So Bernstein isn't showing up for the general election? Or he is and it's too much effort to pull an extra lever (or fill in an extra dot?)

Comment #293237 by Caudimordax on November 28, 2008 at 3:06 pm

I'm still waiting to hear the part that convinces me why I must go out and vote.

Because that is what support means. So you would watch African Americans being beaten by KKK members while you sat on the porch - Saying, "I'm against violent oppression," but being too lazy to go to the phone?

Comment #293229 by Caudimordax on November 28, 2008 at 3:02 pm

No. But I've heard of the ones opposing the rights of gay people, specifically.

I think we might be getting somewhere - not a nice place, but somewhere.

I dunno - Maybe Bernstein is actually posting on the Sarah Palin thread and his comments are just showing up here. That's the only reason I can think of for the total disconnect between Quetz's questions and Bernstein's answers.

(I'd really like to know - I've seen the term here a few times.)

Gay rights have no special significance amidst other human rights

WHO SAID THEY DID?

So why wouldn't you answer the question from Quetz?

414. The Religious Support Behind Proposition 8

Comment #293128 by Caudimordax on November 28, 2008 at 1:52 pm

If you try and "package" gay rights with human rights to gain momentum, it holds no special place when the package is opened.

Once again, it sounds as though you regard "gay" rights as somehow different from "human" rights. If I were to "package" rights together, it would be a big box called "human rights" and would contain "gay rights," "women's rights," "disabled peoples' rights and a bunch of others.

Edit: As usual, my typing is much too slow!

415. Atheist Foundation of Australia Bus Slogan Rejected!

Comment #293096 by Caudimordax on November 28, 2008 at 1:27 pm

Roger - What a sad story! But the sadness is in the fact that Jesse was so indoctrinated into an inflexible world view, that he was unable to get through the cognitive dissonance. So these nutcases first construct an alternate non-reality (referred to hereinafter as "a pack of lies"), indoctrinate their kids into it, and when the kids find out it was all a pack of lies and can't deal with the conflict, it's not the fault of the liars?

416. Does Religion Make You Nice?

Comment #293001 by Caudimordax on November 28, 2008 at 11:50 am

While there are archaeological findings that confirm the historical existence of some people mentioned in the bible, the stories of their actions are often missing, or in some cases contradict the bible.

Aren't historical documents by definition documents that describe things that actually happened in the past? Is the Epic of Gilgamesh a "historical document?" Or is it just an old story?

Edit: I think that "accurate histories" was the sense used in jg's post.

Comment #292989 by Caudimordax on November 28, 2008 at 11:37 am

If you explore extra biblical documentation of reliable ancient historians, you will see that most of the accounts of the Bible are not historical documents.

Just felt I had to correct that.

Goldy - You mean maybe he's just "playing?" I sense a genuine visceral revulsion of something or other combined with an ex post facto rationalization. Does that put us back to square one? Sorry.

I don't have anything arcane to add to this - all I can say is that I've been married for 20 years to a member of the opposite sex, and I can't for the life of me understand why someone else's happiness should have any effect on mine. Other than that I feel my own happiness is diminished if other people are persecuted. How long have you been married, Bernstein?

I knew I'd seen something like this before: If you go to the Harun Yahya thread (updated, under "featured") and look at the alternate thread, there's a comment by Epeeist:

1. Comment #264679 by epeeist on October 15, 2008 at 3:58 am

Edit:

Containing the following offensive language:

Which means that either Yahya is incompetent both in producing pictures which claim fishing lures are caddis flies (which picture he stole from http://www.grahamowengallery.com/) and using quote mined material without checking, or that he is a intentional deceiver.

And, it's the ONLY comment on the alternate thread, just like yours, Steve.

They do exist, right? Even though we can't see them?
