401. Victims: Pope Benedict Protects Accused Pedophile Bishops

Comment #161703 by Colwyn Abernathy on April 15, 2008 at 2:13 pm

Pope Benedict told reporters on his flight this morning from Rome to Washington, D.C., he would do everything possible to avoid a repeat of the scandal.

Because the Vatican dealt with it so nicely the FIRST time...what about Cardinal Bernard Law, Emperor Palpatine?

I was able to change mine, black wolf, by requesting it from the admins. For veteran members like myself, it really wasn't a problem, mainly because my old handle: ColAbernathy, was misleading. People were mistaking the "Col" for "Colonel" and it was getting tiring correcting people, "No no...it's ackshualy short for 'Colwyn'." I'm sure if you ask Josh nicely it shouldn't be a problem.

I can go on and on about technoligies that are easily feasible for the 5 major car companies to create but they don't.

WWeeeeellllll...not necessarily. Just research the short-lived demise of General Motors BRILLIANT little vehicle: the EV-1. It coulda been BIG, coulda been a contender. Those who KNEW about it wanted one. Big ol' waiting list. The infrastructure was ready for California consumers. What did GM do? Offered only leases with no option to buy, scrimped on advertising that was pathetic compared to its Hummer line. We HAVE the technology, consumers that know about it, WANT the technology. Where is it? Why are we wasting time and research on the infeasible hydrogen cell when electricity would be able to fill the gap UNTIL such technology is even remotely feasible? Oh, and the Tesla Roadster? DO WANT! :)

Get a second opinion, and why not a third? Do a bit of research on your own to get the gist, and ask other experts in the field questions. Learning something new can be fun and exciting. The important point is to ask questions.

416. Rep. Davis: The Worst Person in the World

Comment #158401 by Colwyn Abernathy on April 10, 2008 at 12:47 pm

Sent this out to her gov. e-mail. Opinions? ;)

Ms. Davis,

It has come to my attention that you actually said to a fellow American: "Get out of that seat! You have no right to be here.," among other such contradictory, as well as inflammatory statements to the effect that those who make the decision to reject a belief in god are dangerous and believe in destruction. I do not understand, Ms. Davis. Do we, as Americans, not have the right to express ourselves, even if those expressions disagree with someone else's? Is it too much to bear that people would reject a belief in god, a belief you hold so strongly that you would project prejudice and outright lies based on ONE belief? (or lack thereof?) I should also point out, Ms. Davis, that you, too, are an atheist. HOW? You may ask, well. Answer this simple question:

Do you believe in Odin?

No? Then you are an atheist in regards to those who hold Odin as The AllFather, and as someone who believes in Mighty Wotan I say to you:

"I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE AGAINST ODIN, BUT SOME OF US DON'T HAVE MUCH AGAINST HIM. WE LOOK FORWARD TO HIM AND VALHALLA...I'M TRYING TO UNDERSTAND THE PHILOSOPHY YOU WANT TO SPREAD IN THE STATE OF THE UNION. THIS IS THE LAND OF THE FREE WHERE PEOPLE BELIEVE IN THE ALLFATHER...WHAT YOU HAVE TO SPEW AND SPREAD IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS...IT'S DANGEROUS FOR OUR CHILDREN TO EVEN KNOW THAT YOUR PHILOSOPHY EXISTS! ...GET OUT OF THAT SEAT! YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO BE HERE! WE BELIEVE IN SOMETHING! YOU BELIEVE IN DESTROYING WHAT OUR NATION WAS BUILT UPON!"

Looks ridiculous now, doesn't it? And I'll remind you, Ms. Davis, that in our great Republic, NO ONE, and I do mean NO ONE, has the right to silence another voice simply because they don't agree. We're all in this together, Ms. Davis, whether you like it or not.

"If you disagree with someone, let him live. You'll not find another in a hundred billion galaxies."

"For many people, faith isn't enough. They require hard evidence, scientific proof."

Both are from Carl Sagan, who was also an atheist in regards to your god. I assume you believe he did not have a right to be here either, despite the work he did in not only the field of astronomy, but also in making science accessable to everyone. Those who promote bigotry and censorship reveal themselves for who they are. It is clear to me that you do not believe in freedom, and as such, I respectfully request you step down from the Illinois State Assembly, as you are not fit to defend the rights of everyone, including those who disagree with you. I thank you for your time.

Ultimately all our posts on internet forums are a form of self-expression. Some people feel it more important to give the impression "I am a sensitive person who feels for the plight of the mentally ill", others "I am a person with a sense of humour and an appreciation for good slapstick" or "I am a person who believes passionately that no area of human activity should be arbitrarily excluded from the remit of comedy". Just because you prefer to emphasise the one in no way means you reject the other. I like to think I am both sensitive and passionate about freedom of comedy - and I most certainly can laugh and cry at different aspects of the same situation at the same time with no trace of hypocrisy.

And the Cool-Ass Quotable Award goes to Cartomancer! Couldn't have said it better meself! I really can't add anything more to that.

And if I'm going to be honest, I can't deny feeling that way. WON'T deny it. And I cannot deny that I find this story hilarious. If that makes some think I'm an elitist asshole, then they're certainly welcome to feel that way.

And misery loves company. Suffering is a virtue, apparently, and to suffer greatly in THIS life will offer great rewards in the NEXT one, assuming there IS a second life after this. (HA HA! Virtual Real-Estate) Mother Theresa was a BIG fan of this idea, oh, and by "studying" suffering she'd be closer to understanding the nature of Sat...er...god. Bullocks all round if you ask me. You ask "isn't it true...?"
Well, no, it isn't true, in the sense that not all of the millions of people who visit Lourdes each year are the sick seeking a miracle cure.
Don't imagine that I am defending Lourdes and it's delusional function, but we need always to address the reality of what believers are claiming rather than what we imagine they are claiming.
Many of the pilgrims at Lourdes will speak of the "miracle of faith renewed, or faith strengthened".
Or simply a faith boosting experience without particular reference to a miracle.
My personal "miracle" happened just 30 kms from Lourdes, at a place called Luz-Saint Sauveur, where I was healed of a lifelong fear of heights and vertigo.
On the Napoleon Bridge, to be precise. A bungee jump of 90m!! A terrifying experience, but, darn it, it worked! And I know how. So, in fact, no miracle at all.

"the aim wasn't to bring them back without their disablility, it was to give them a nice time. It succeeds year upon year. It succeeds because people are generous with their time and money. Prayer seems to be the common denominator between the volunteers and fundraisers involved."

If the aim is to show them a nice time, why not petition Hannah Montana to throw them a concert, staffed by volunteers? Trip to Disney World? If it's to give them a chance to see and do things they wouldn't be able to do otherwise, why take them to a place of false hopes and disappointment? After all, isn't it true that the main reason pilgrims go to Lourdes is to experience a miracle? Why would they go otherwise?
