Comment #153242 by Philip1978 on April 1, 2008 at 9:21 am
This article does scare me a little in the sense that I think something is well and truly up to no good.
What the heck are countries like Cuba, Russia and China doing voting for all this rubbish? I cannot see any possible advantage for them politically at all, I can guess why countries like Pakistan voted for it but Cuba, come on, something hideously odd is going on here or I am getting all conspiracy theorist for no good reason!
Secondly, I may have got this hideously wrong so correct me please, but isn't just ever so slightly dangerous allowing these sort of countries the "right" to get offended at anything they consider to be in direct conjunction with Islam. That could be absolutely ANYTHING! If there haven't been enough killings over films and cartoons already, what happens when one of the more nuclear countries decides that their "rights" have been infringed?
Thirdly, I must be getting paranoid in my youth but isnt this is a very clever way of also spreading Islamic influence around the world? Don't the fundamentalists hold on to the notion that anything that is not Islamic is fair game to kill maim and destroy because its Allah's will? So any country that breaks a rule of this bill is in vast amounts of trouble, how would the situation be rectified with out resorting to conflict? Diplomatic relations are nigh on impossible against this because all the Islamic country would do is to say they feel offended and that's it, Kabooom!
Scary stuff indeed, I do hope this can be sorted out or there is going to be massive amounts of trouble.

Reverend Dark
My sincere condolences sir, I am sorry for your family's loss of someone so dear.
I have very fond memories of both my grandmothers, they both had an enormous impact on the sort of person I am today.
I can imagine someone who can put up with a sinful, long haired, knife wielding atheist AND play scrabble with them sounds quite a formidable person! :) I am glad she brought such an impact into your life, that can never be a bad thing
No religious bullshit about Jesus, Holy ghosts or Gods will ever take that away and I am sorry you had to put up with that insensitive priest - This is one of the things I loathe about religion, its one of the reasons I had a go at Wooter a while back, the lack of PROPER compassion and disingenuous dribblings just fail to do justice to help in the real world.
There is nothing quite like the real people in your life, who stick by you, offer advice and are there for you when you need it the most, those people matter so much more than religion.
My sympathies again,
Philip

This is so tea drinkingly excellent, I love it when they find new fossils, even small bits and are then able to reconstruct the features in the model shown above.
The hominid jawbone itself is probably from a female because it is small. Although the jaw fragment is not much to go on, from previous fossils the researchers can guess that the cave people would have been around 1.7 metres high (5ft 7in), with a brain three-quarters the size of ours.

Well, my cup of Tea is firmly held high in a massive cheers for PZ, if this is not a definition of a hoopy frood who knows where his towel is, I don't know what would be!
Funny this whole mentioning of Hitler, after reading through all the things that the Expelled crew have been blathering on about Nazis I remembered a well known phrase of Hitler's. The bigger the lie, the more people will believe it - now, is it me, or are Mathis, Stein & co lying their arses off to make this look like it was in fact all the atheists fault?
Everybody should know that PZ did nothing wrong in any of this and that the Expelled crew over-reacted, but it is obvious, at least to me, that they are now lying so that atheists are seen in a bad light in the Christian community. Do they think if they keep repeating the same bullshit over and over again, people will actually rally to their cause?
I am very glad there are people like PZ, PZ's daughter, Richard, Josh - anyone who has contributed into bringing into light what has really happened- who are showing these guys as to what they are really doing - shooting themselves in the foot with a bazooka!
Go gettem!

Its got bugger all to do with it except David and others think its so bloody clever and intelligent to keep linking the two together. Sam Harris was right, how many times are we going to hear this bullshit argument showing Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot etc?
No matter how many times you turn around and say that the one thing these evil men did not do is commit every single atrocity and act of disgusting barbarity BECAUSE OF or IN THE NAME OF Atheism!
George Bush does things in the name of his God, Osama Bin Laden does things in the name of Allah, The Pope does things in the name of God - all of this has one thing in common - they are doing it BECAUSE OF or IN THE NAME OF their higher, invisible, undetectable figment of their imagination.
Hitler was possibly a Catholic or a hypocrite or both, did he not do the things he did because he was a political power hungry megalomaniac delusional bastard? Stalin saw the effect of religion and basically set up a new one in the guise of Communism so he could be a political power hungry megalomaniac delusional bastard!
The list goes on as to why they did the horrific things they did but for goodness sake I advise people like yourself David, who take every opportunity to make people look bad by twisting and distorting facts about atheism, to SHUT UP about it, its sodding pathetic!
Atheism is a complete absence of a belief in Gods, the supernatural etc That's it! Finished, Case closed! If I do a good thing its because I am hoping to be a good man, if I want to be a bastard the chance is there for me to be a bastard and gain advantage from it - I would do those things because of character flaws or something like that, chemical brain imbalance perhaps - but not because I "believe" in Atheism. Atheism is just a word that describes or explains my view on religious matters but it sure as bloody hell does not describe or explain the reason for my sodding actions!

Further more, he would say, as a Christian, that is not the Waffle he knows of and that not the Waffle that any other Christian would recognise!
He would also advise you to go and study Waffle to truly understand it's correct meaning!

How broad a spectrum would you like?
My advice is go and look at all religions before Christianity, especially the Near Eastern ones, look at their fascination with the Zodiac, Constellations, the position of the sun during the four seasons.
Look at all the similarities in the actions and events of all the Gods involved in relation to what happened to Jesus in the bible and then really start thinking about if it all is one mighty coincidence that virgin birth, raising dead people, performing miracles, dying and then coming back to life etc etc are appearing in religions before yours did.
Its not just Jesus who is a plagiarised metaphor, Job for example, his story is an EXACT replica of an Egyptian story, told WAY before the Talmud was written.
Then go and look at the complete lack of information, historical records, of Jesus EVER existing from 4 BC to 40AD, any miracles SHOULD have been recorded by independent witnesses - even visitors from other countries surely would have raced back to their own countries with stories of this miracle man?
The Bible is so historically inaccurate - if the flood happened for example, how come at least 7 generations of Egyptian Pharaohs lived on afterwards - was a descendent brought on the ark?
Read this
http://www.bidstrup.com/bible.htm
It is very well written and should give you an idea of how useless the Bible is to source historical events from.
Plus finally:
And who knows, maybe supernatural events do have their rules and laws?

Jon,
I thought your description of Wooter's country of origin is fascinating, I really have always thought that he/she/it/detestable glob of yeast on the pap smear of life (Excellent post Reverend by the way!) was from somewhere like Thailand. I, though I am absolutely no expert in this what so ever, keep looking at his short, very insistent, jumbled sentence structure, odd analogies and picturing that kind of accent. (I am obviously over-generalising a great deal here, this is probably bordering on stereotyping so please forgive any offence if caused, I don't mean to)
May I also take this chance to raise my two pint mug of Tea in support of everybody's contributions, I find them fascinating to the core. The best I have ever done is swear at Wooter and point out just how much of an insensitive [insert favourite swear word, mine would be cunt, but I like freedom of expression!] that he/she/it/detestable glob of yeast on the pap smear of life has become due to the horrible influence of religion.
I think the good Reverend's post has spelt it out extremely well about what Wooter is like, the effect on religion someone like Wooter is so manifestly dangerous to life on planet Earth (Quetz knows where Wooter is - this planet with cats with paintbrushes up their arses and humans with the Sword Excaliber in the same place sounds mightily wrong!). Kids get taught very bad and highly inaccurate things, knowledge, reason,PROPER logic and sincere love of your fellow humans all get substituted and disregarded in order for fuzzy feelings created to justify the greatness of an invisible celestial bastard. I shall call this The Wooter Effect - The complete disregard for all that is good, intelligent, fun and helpful in this world just so God can provide that celestial vibrator Wooter so openly covets.
I for one am obviously sick of it and all I would like in this world is for Wooter to CHANGE HIS/HERS/IT'S/DETESTABLE GLOB OF YEAST ON THE PAP SMEAR OF LIFE'S MIND.
Go on Wooter, take the bloody God goggles off for 10 sodding minutes, I dare you, I really do!

From Wiki
Logic (from Classical Greek logos) meaning word, thought, idea, argument, account, reason, or principle) is the study of the principles and criteria of valid inference and demonstration.

Steve its not just the Tea that makes me smile, I am an optimistic looney who has a reasonably un-crushable lust for life. I get enthusiastic about quite a lot... well, pretty much anything in fact... for example, I have been listening to good music this morning! I cannot quite pin point as to precisely why, all I know this is how I want to live life. I know its got nothing to do with the supernatural and more to do with hoping that its infectious to the people around me.
Pathfinder
Churchill did not do that because he was an atheist, he did it mostly because of politics and the survival of the country he was in charge of because a great evil had emerged and was conquering Europe. That's the point I was hoping to get across
I think I haven't explained my views on hell well enough so here goes.
God and Jesus supposedly love you, yes?
So as long as you worship them, live by the highly impossible rules, watch some of the worst things in the world happen, accept any punishment handed down because you somehow deserved it - all of this with no means of communication or clarification- and continue to love them you can get into heaven.
Should you fail to do these things, you will be sent to a place of fire and brimstone with much gnashing of teeth etc
But, not to worry because God and Jesus love to bits!
I have referred to this many times as being exactly like Stockholm Syndrome and so far I have not been convinced otherwise. God holds you hostage, does horrible things to you and mankind - doesn't matter how many times or the level of nastiness attached- and he manges to still get your love in return.
I refuse point blank to accept this.
This is mental torture, this is religion at its level bastard nastiness for which I have no time for. This is celestial dictatorship, bow down or else - So imagine if you can the number of people who truly fear God and going to hell and imagine the torment some people put themselves through for even the smallest of things.
Knowing what God wants is impossible, at best people can only imagine it - the bible will not help you verify stuff - so thinking you have done something wrong, praying for forgiveness but getting no answer can lead some to utter madness and terrible psychological problems. (See the exorcism article for a good example of this use of fear and misery)
I aspire to care as much as I can for people, this sort of thing annoys me and horrifies me - all because of lies and distortions from a religion. Wanting God's love and getting it are nigh on impossible.
I prefer the comfort and solace of good people who are real and there to help you through the tough times. Not figments of imagination that can drive a person to mental torture and misery.
So, I don't like the idea of hell because of that, I don't like religions because of it.
Does that help a bit?
