Hitchens is dead right that any such god as is depicted in the "holy books" handed to us is nothing short of a dictator of some supernatural North Korea; one from which we can never escape not even through death.
Thank goodness it's a lie. But please do the thought experiment and follow through on the implications if god DOES exist. They are terrifying.

I hope writing that was a cathartic experience for the author. It rather read to me like they needed to get something off their chest. For any "Dads Army" fans out there I just kept thinking, "They don't like it up 'em!"
No indeed, they don't like their superstitions attacked and oh how it shows in this piece. The only accurate thing in the article was this:
"But the two people Hitchens seems to want to hurt the most are beyond his reach."
They are - but not for the reasons the author thinks.
Good fun to read though!

I'll give one recent anecdote from my own listening experience. Listening to 'Up all night', on five live (as I often do living in the states). I was treated to a BBC correspondents take on the stoning to death of that poor innocent girl in northern Iraq. After his tear jerking summary of events he somehow thought it necessary to add, and this is direct quote, (I often record shows), "of course this should not reflect on the majority of those practitioners of that faith". This is hand wringing political correctness of the WORST kind - OF COURSE it should reflect upon the practitioners of that faith!!!! Just an anecdote I know - but you hear that kind of suicidal political correctness all the time on the BBC; and THAT is a social agenda they are pushing, even if not consciously.

There will be negatively impacted populations if climate change really starts to bite; bad luck. There will likely be as many for whom it is a boon. Think of all that extra arable land that will become available above certain altitudes; not to mention longer growing season in significant parts of the world. Hell I meet Canadians every day who are loving the idea of a bit of global warming! 90% of there country is empty wasteland: ditto for most of Russia. Most Canadians are probably looking forward to a little less snow and being able to move further north away from America, (joke), well you get the point.
Humanity won't go extinct we will just adapt: we'll stop living where we used to and go live somewhere else. Will it be tough for individual human beings in specific locations. Yup. I agree vast complex conspiracy theories are bunk because as you correctly point out too many people have to be in the know and the risk of someone leaking is too great.
But that is kind of my point.
There is no conspiracy - it's all right out there in the open. Limit the west; let the emerging nations go nuts. Does this sound just like science and environmentalism Brian? Will you acknowledge that there could at least be a political component even if you won't go as far as me? If your view is that Co2 legislation sounds great and we should 'suck it up' for a bit well fair enough if that is your POLITICAL position: but whether you like it or not that is a political - not a scientific - position. You are admitting with that statement I feel that it is NOT just all about the science.
Given that politics is involved; is it not reasonable therefore to subject the science to the VERY HIGHEST level of scrutiny as chbg has been attempting here. Is that level of scrutiny occuring? Not in the mainstream where people like chbg and I get called deniers like we are some kind of Holocaust debunkers or something.
Perhaps more later I have to go serve the oppressive capitalist machine that is pumping all that Co2 out.

Brian and chbg21808 you guys are hardcore: but learning lots from both of you so I am trying to keep up with the pace!
Here's a little anecdote for you that I freely admit means absolutely nothing in terms of evidence. I attented a meeting recently with some very senior people, (actually the most senior), in my industry who are next week as it happens going to Washington to lobby for US industry on CO2 emissions. They were generally pessimistic and revealed their sources have told them that legislation restricting Co2 emissions and imposing penalties for it is in the pipeline and only a matter of time. I am only hearing this second hand but I have spoken to people who have been told by VERY senior politicians and government bureaucrats that there is a systematic effort afoot for global wealth re-distribution. A major part of this program is putting a break on North American and Europe by the back door through Co2 limiting legislation while doing absolutely NOTHING to do the same for China, India, Brazil et al.
This is not about the environment.
World Socialist government anyone?
I know I'll be ripped apart for this and that's ok but it is NOT just about climatologists in their labs or on Artic ice flows doing science my friends. I am utterly convinced there is a much bigger picture.
Ah well, back to work.

for my part, I am very suspicious not of the scientists, who by and large I think are just "doing their thing", but a significant number of politicians / media types who are driving this push toward A) shutting down all debate and B) Pushing an agenda of "must act now".
But as I made the point in previous posts; it seems to be a drive to restrict the lifestyles and economies of the USA and Europe whilst letting China et al off scott free, probably because they know China et al will tell them to shove it anyway. Which means its about exercising power and control - nothing to do with saving the planet. I dunno - I don't want to sound like a conspiracy nut but this AGW brainwashing is scary stuff and I worry at the real agenda.

"Is AGW happening? What we do about it, political realities etc. have nothing to do with that question."
I would have switched that around as follows:
What do we do? Is AGW happening has nothing to do with that question.
You see it goes like this:
1) Is AGW Real? ans = NO - great! Ok carry on as usual
2) Is AGW real? ans = YES, (At least based on all the available evidence or lack there of) - hmm..shit! Ok carry on as usual.
Lets compare to the other topic we are often here to discuss:
1) Is God Real? Yes - Great! Keep praying
2) Is God Real? NO (At least based on all the available evidence or lack thereof) - Don't care! Keep praying!
Ultimately I am saying two things but the second is my main point:
1) I am not convinced by what I have read, (though I will check out those links Brian), that AGW is real
2) Whether it is real or not, like the existence of God, is for most people, (or countries) irrelevent. So I am afraid I am not very hopeful Brian. Not at all.

Therefore - you can drive your hybrid car and screw in flourescent light bulbs all you want they don't give a shit.
