Bill aims to let praying, Jesus back in Ohio schools

26

A portrait of Jesus and prayer could return to public schools if two state representatives persuade fellow lawmakers to pass the Ohio Religious Freedom Restoration Act.

Rep. Tim Derickson, a Republican from Oxford and one of the co-sponsors, called the bill introduced yesterday “a preventive attempt” to block further encroachment on expression of religious freedom. He cited examples such as prohibition of prayer in schools and public places, zoning issues for churches, and public expression of religious faith, such as wearing crosses and displaying Nativity scenes.

Asked if the law, had it been in effect, would have affected recent cases where Ohio schools were forced to remove pictures of Jesus, Rep. Bill Patmon, D-Cleveland, said, “You would have a better opportunity of keeping Jesus up.”

“A court being asked to remove Jesus in a manger would have to prove it is in government’s interest,” Patmon said.

Patrick Elliott, a staff attorney for Freedom From Religion Foundation, based in Madison, Wis., called the proposal bad policy and “dangerous.”

  2. What for? Hasn’t the blighter done enough damage, what with ACE etc.

  3. Don’t be daft, as far as they are concerned religious freedom only applies to Christians

Well then I think a picture of Satan is in order. Maybe I’ll donate one to them.

  6. Ah yes that old standby, in the interests of religious freedom. Translated from the propaganda as we need to ram Christianity down people’s throats.

  7. “Religious Freedom Restoration Act”?

Must be some artist who comes up with a name like this.

  9. Great opportunity for publicity to show how ridiculous they are being! The more of these stupid attempts there are, the sooner religion will disappear. Bring it on!!

I have to agree Richard, they just don’t get that it then applies to all religious views, not just their particular brand of christianity. Of course in their heads they think it does so the more pictures of satan or the FSM that go up the more it hammers the point home to them that they are not as dominant as they think they are.

  11. Who gave Ohio Republicans the right to amend the US Constitution?

Don’t these fcukwits have any serious legislation to pass which might actually improve people’s lives or something?

    **No, we don’t :-) **

Seriously: Pictures just make the site look and feel like Facebook, and that’s something we’d rather avoid. The exception is if it’s an explanatory diagram on a science-related thread.

    Thanks.

  15. Darn. I have a funny one!!! I’ll describe. A student sent me a picture of a painting of a crucified christ. The painting is skewed left in to photo because to the right there are three smacked asses who are spelling out “….M….C…..A…..”

The caption is “Blasphemy: a ticket to hell has never been funnier”.

It strikes me as funny and I was going to post it to demonstrate that letting Jesus back into the schools does not guarantee that Jesus will be taken seriously in said school….

After a very very short google search, the first hit was the damn picture.

  19. Thanks for the link, Crooked – I can’t wait to have a look. Reminds me of the Macho Man Randy Savage cartoon that surfaced just after his death showing him entering heaven during the rapture, with Jesus busy doing whatever it is one does during a rapture and Macho Man, clearly just dropping into heaven (through clouds, etc), flying in with a typical wrestling pose as if he’s going to body slam Jesus. Google: ‘Macho Man rapture cartoon’ to have a look.

  21. What they really ought to have called it is the “Restoration of the Freedom to Impose Religion Act.”
